BARNES, Shirley Lorraine - Born March 13, 1933, in Halifax, a daughter of the late Dudley L. and Annie M. "Betty" Gunning, passed away October 15, 2007, peacefully at home in Eastern Passage at age 74. Devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother, she is survived and will be sadly missed by her husband of 53 years, William C., and her children, Bill (Diane), Chris (Sue) and Cathy (Scott); grandchildren, Ashley, Stacie, Kim, Kyle, Kaitlyn, and Abby; special niece, Sharon Munroe, along with many other nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by daughter, Debra Lynn; sister, Greta Fetinko, and uncle, Art Burnett. Visitation will be held 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, October 17, in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, October 18, in St. Peter's Anglican Church, Eastern Passage. A reception to follow in the Lions Club, Hornes Road, Eastern Passage. BRIAN, Margaret Ann, 67. It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our loving wife and mother on Saturday, October 13, 2007, in Dartmouth General Hospital after a lengthy battle with complications of diabetes and vascular disease. She was a lifelong resident of Dartmouth and the youngest daughter of the late Gordon and Ethel (Foley) Ritchie. She will be deeply missed by Henry, her husband of 48 years; children, Cory, Tommy, Jane (Bobby), and Robbie (Nancy); grandchildren, Natasha, Cody, Connor, and Sydney; and great-grandson, Lucas. Remembered fondly by sisters and brothers, Dorothy (Murray) Jordan, Dartmouth; Russell (Veronica) Ritchie, Largo, Fla.; Gordon (May) Ritchie, Dartmouth; Barbara (Garry Petit) Thom, Oshawa, Ont.; Emma (Christopher) Creese, Dartmouth; George (Maria) Ritchie, Cape Cod, Mass.; Lloyd (Sharon) Ritchie, Oshawa, Ont.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by sisters, Kathleen and Evelyn (Elroy) Mosher, and brother, Reginald (Mary) Foley. Margaret loved to take an active part in family activities, and entertaining friends and relatives. She enjoyed serving others, doing home care for many years. One of her favourite pastimes was yard sales with her long-time friend, Mary Miller, who passed away May 2005. She was an avid bowler and member of the Red Hat Society and TOPS. Cremation has taken place. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, where the visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. Thursday, October 18. A memorial service will be held in the funeral home chapel 2 p.m. on Friday, Rev. Pat Malin officiating. Burial in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. Reception to follow in the funeral home. Mr. Gordon Charles Jewkes

JEWKES, Gordon Charles, 90, Halifax, passed away quietly at home on Sunday, October 14, 2007. Born in Springhill on May 19, 1917. He was a son of the late James Herbert and Mary (Reese) Jewkes. Gordon was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Gordon is survived by his loving wife, Helen (Gray); daughter, Mary; sons, James (Valerie) and Russell; grandchildren, Jennifer, John David, Shaun James, and Zachary; great-granddaughter, Grace Marie-Ella; half-sisters, Teddy and Evie. He was predeceased by sisters, Helen and Viva; brothers, Bill, Ron, and half-brother, Hallie. A veteran of the Second World War, Gordon served with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. On return from overseas, Gordon married Helen and went to work with Otis Elevator in Halifax. Gordon retired after 35 years and devoted his time to hunting, fishing and his beloved garden. An intensely private and gentle man, he has left us all better off for knowing him. We will miss you and carry you always in our thoughts and hearts. The family will receive visitors at home, Wednesday, October 17, from 1-4 p.m. Arrangements have been entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax.
Mrs. Rolande Hermine Milliken
September 13, 1931 - October 13, 2007
MILLIKEN, Rolande Hermine, 76, Hammonds Plains, passed away peacefully October 13, 2007, in the Palliative Care Unit, QEII, after bravely facing her battle with cancer over the last nine months. Born in Ottawa, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Fleurette (Lefebvre) Bourgeau. She lived in London, Ont., for 35 years and with her husband, moved to Nova Scotia in 2003 to be closer to her son and his family. She enjoyed spending time at the Royal Canadian Legion, Calais Branch 162, where she made many wonderful friends and loved to play cribbage. She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Gordon; sons, Bryan (Leslie Graham), Lakeview; Paul (Mary), England; daughter, Susan Johnson, Toronto; granddaughter, Andrea Graham; sisters, Rita Cole, Diane Coughlin, as well as her brother, Robert Bourgeau. She was predeceased by sisters, Georgette Rayner, Charlotte Hunkin, and her brother, John Bourgeau. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today in Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Dr., Lower Sackville, where a memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday. Private family burial will take place in Oakridge Memory Gardens with a reception to follow in Royal Canadian Legion, Calais Branch 162. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion, Calais Branch 162, 45 Sackville Cross Rd., Lower Sackville, NS B4C 2M2. She will be sadly missed by her family and all who were lucky enough to have known her.
Mrs. Florence Ina Billard (Norman)

BILLARD (Norman), Florence Ina passed away peacefully in Chancellor Park, Newfoundland and Labrador, in her 98th year. Formerly of Cupids, N.L., she was a long-time resident of Halifax. She was predeceased by her husband, John Chesley Billard (2002); sister, Evelyn Norman (1990); brother, William Norman (2004); and nephew, Billy Norman (1959). Left with fond memories are nephews, Hubert Norman (Daphne), Roger Norman (Gail); grandnieces and grandnephews, Pamela Masterson (Alexander and Chelsea), Cherisse Norman (Julianna), Timothy, Bradley, Cheryl and Janet Norman; also a large circle of other relatives and friends including fellow residents and staff at Chancellor Park. Aunt Ina was a retired school teacher, having taught in schools in Newfoundland and Labrador as well as other Atlantic provinces. She was long-standing, active member of Edgewood-Oxford United Church in Halifax. Cremation has taken place. Family will receive visitors in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax, on Friday, October 19, from 12-2 p.m. Funeral service will take place in Edgewood United Church on Friday, October 19, at 2:30 p.m. with private interment to follow.

CURTIS (MacLeod), Eva M., 91, Dartmouth, passed away peacefully Monday, October 15, 2007, in Parkstone Enhanced Care, Halifax, surrounded by her loving family. Born August 31, 1916, in Riverdale, P.E.I., she was the only daughter of the late Louis D. "L.D." and Janet (Gordon) MacLeod. When Eva was about the age of one, her family moved to Victoria, P.E.I., where they made the family home. Eva is survived by her devoted and loving husband of 54 years, Edward Curtis; sons, Gordon, Glenn (Beverly); grandchildren, Jennifer, Jessica, all of Dartmouth; brother, Lester MacLeod, Albany, P.E.I. She was predeceased by her brother, Donald MacLeod; sisters-in-law, Mary (MacPhail) MacLeod, Margaret (MacKenzie) MacLeod; nephew, Paul MacLeod; niece, Verna MacLeod (all of Prince Edward Island). Eva shared her passion for learning by teaching at the school in Victoria and surrounding villages. Her compassion for others led to a career as a registered laboratory technologist in Prince Edward Island Hospital. Eva's dedication to helping others and friendly disposition will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Special thanks are extended to the nursing and support staff at Parkstone Enhanced Care for easing the pain of both Eva and her family during this difficult time. Arrangements have been entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, where Eva's family will receive friends from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Thursday. Mr. Cyril Donald Nicholson

NICHOLSON, Cyril Donald - 62, Tatamagouche. It is with great sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Cyril in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, on October 16, 2007. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Ernest and Eileen (Batchilder) Nicholson, Harrietsfield. Cyril is survived by his best friend, soul mate and wife of 42 years, Thelma; daughter, Diane Campbell (Brian), Tatamagouche; sons, David (Kathy), Lake Charlotte and Dennis (Tanya), Dartmouth; brothers, Gerald (Cathy), Tatamagouche, and Gary (Sherri), Wentworth; the brightest lights in his life, his grandchildren, Amanda, Corey, Christopher, Kayla, Trevor, and Ashley, who absolutely adored their Grampy. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and special "son and daughter-in-law" Danny and Tammy Baker. He was predeceased by son-in-law, Dave McAlden. It's been said that God only takes the good ones, well this time he took the best. Cyril was a wonderful son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, and was loved by everyone who had the honour to know him. Cyril's great sense of humour and his knack for pulling pranks was his specialty which always kept everyone laughing. He was the kindest man you'd ever want to meet and would go out of his way to help anyone. Cyril was part owner of the family business, Nicholson's Auto Salvage in Harrietsfield, for many years. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, four-wheeling, gardening and working in his garage. One of his favourite things to do was go camping with the Lake Charlotte gang where his presence will be sadly missed. He will also be missed by his sidekick, Missy. Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. today and 1-4 p.m. Thursday in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd. Funeral mass will be held 2 p.m. Friday, October 19, in St. Michael's Church, corner of St. Michael's Avenue and Herring Cove Road. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville.
