He spent 13 years with Ocean Contractors and before that worked for Thompson's Transfer. He was a volunteer firefighter with the Bedford Fire Department in his younger days and moved on to serve with the Mount Uniacke and then Hammonds Plains Volunteer Fire Departments. He loved the time he spent at the Fire Department and it was a passion he never lost. Most of all Gary loved his family, especially his granddaughters Katelyn and Rachel whom he adored, and they knew it. He would spend as much time as possible taking them on one adventure or another. Vacations in Prince Edward Island on the beach in Darnley were very special with them. His entire family will remember him as a loving and courageous man of few words but a huge heart. His honesty, strength and character will forever remain in our hearts. He was extremely proud of his sons who had the same dignity and compassion for others and strength of character that he himself had. A special thanks to the palliative care team for their compassion and support, the VON nurses who cared so much not only for Gary but for the family as a whole. A heartfelt thanks to those at Sackville Trenching, as well as our many friends, and coworkers who lent their support and compassion in our time of need. We couldn't have done this without your love and support for Gary and our family. Gary's sisters, brother and their families, Maria, Richard and Micheline, you have been our support from the beginning of Gary's illness and we knew that we could call on you at any time for anything, even walking Bailey, and that made it so much easier on all of us. We are so blessed that you are our family forever, and always will be in our life and in our hearts. Viewing will be from 7-9 p.m. Friday in Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Dr., Lower Sackville.
