George Donald (Skip) Briand
86, Crescent City, Florida
George Donald (Skip) Briand, passed away July 28, 2000, at the Crescent City Hospital, Florida.
He was the son of the late Angus and Minnie (Lawrence) Briand. Skip was born in L’Ardoise, Cape Breton Island, and moved to Glace Bay in 1926.
In 1942 he enlisted in the R.C.E. Following his discharge from the army he resided in Toronto, where he married Mildred Waite and later moved to Florida.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years Mildred; brothers, Frank, Halifax, Albert (Theresa), Montreal; sisters, Rita Briand, Halifax and Mary (Angus) MacNeil, Glace Bay.
He is predeceased by his sisters, Angie and Annie, and a brother Alex.
Burial will take place in Crescent City, Florida.

Norma Marie (nee Christie) Coles
Sydney
Norma (Christie) Coles, 30, of 740 Upper Prince St., Sydney, passed away on Monday, July 31, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney, she was the daughter of James and Catherine (Smith) Christie of Sydney. She was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish, Sydney.
Surviving are her husband David S. Coles; a daughter, Kaylalyn Catherine, at home; a son, David James, at home; three brothers, Robert (Susan), Eddie (Kendra), and David (Renee), all of Sydney.
Predeceased by a daughter Christina.
The late Mrs. Coles will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Holy Redeemer Church with Rev. E. MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Bernard Joseph (Cod) Dawson
75, Sydney
Bernard Joseph (Cod) Dawson, 75, of Grand Lake Road, Sydney, passed away Saturday, July 29, 2000, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Joseph and Mary (LaLard) Dawson. Bernie first worked at the Docks at Sydney Steel Plant and retired from the Blast Furnace in 1980. He was a veteran of the Second World War and member of Royal Canadian Legion 128, Whitney Pier. Bernie was a charter member of the Grand Lake Road Volunteer Fire Dept. He was a well-known baseball player in his early years and also active in bowling and darts.
Bernie was a member of St. Augustine’s Parish, formerly a member of Holy Redeemer Parish.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years (Kay) Kathleen Farrell; two daughters, Dianna (Jim) Leon, Deep River, Ont. and Cheryl (Gerard) McPhee, Glace Bay; a son John J. (Barbara), Scarborough, Ont.; grandchildren, Michelle and Vincent Leon; Shannon and Tara McPhee and Bernard Dawson. Also surviving are four sisters Alice Hooper, Mary Dawson and Jennie O’Callaghan, all of Sydney, and Dora Clarke, Scarborough, Ont.
Bernie was predeceased by two sisters, Rosie Reid and Dora Danielak; six brothers, Nick and John Dawson, Peter, Charles (Curley), Raymond and Arthur Doucette.
Visitation was held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be in Holy Redeemer Church today (Tuesday) 11 a.m. with Rev. Errol MacDonald and Rev. James Attwood officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Memorials may be made to Cancer Clinic or Palliative Care of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

Ernest Andrew Digout
86, St. Peter's
Ernest Andrew Digout, 88, formerly of St. Peter’s, passed away July 28, 2000, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Brantford, Ont.
Born in French Cove, N.S., he was the son of the late William Digout and Rebecca Landry.
He leaves behind to mourn, his wife, Barbara (Cassidy) as well as two stepdaughters; four stepsons, 14 step-grandchildren, all of Ontario; brothers, Murdock and Lawrence, both of St. Peter’s; Victor, Ontario; sisters, Clara, England; Elnora, Sampsonville, Earldeen, Mass.
Ernest was predeceased by sisters, Helen and Theresa, both of Mass., Rosella and Mabel, both of French Cove; brother, Herman, Margaree.
Ernest served in the R.C.A.F. during the Second World War in both Canada and Europe where he received the Order of the British Empire for services above and beyond the call of duty. Ernest was a past president of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 47, active in community organizations, the credit union, Co-op and Lakeside Telephone.
He fished on the Grand Banks, and was a machinist and welder by trade.
He will be greatly missed by many nieces and nephews who loved and adored him.
Ernest shall never be forgotten by his family.
Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be announced.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Hospital, Brantford or St. Peter’s Parish Cemetery, St. Peter’s.

Everett (Ev) Greer
64, Sydney
On Sunday, July 30, 2000, Ev passed away in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. He was a resident of 4A since the hospital opened.
He moved to Sydney from New Brunswick as a young boy and has been a resident ever since. Ev was employed at the General Office with Sydney Steel. He was very active in the Lions Club and an avid bowler.
He is survived by his sisters, Arlene (Mrs. Tom Dunford), Sydney, and Janice (Mr. Ray Rossiter), Waterbury, Connecticut, and his brothers, Wendell (Bud), Sydney, Robert (Ann), Tarbotvale, Garth (Paula), Sydney, and Gerald (Marilyn), Pompano, Florida.
He was predeceased by his parents, Louis and Katherine Greer.
Ev is also survived by his 11 nieces and nephews; 18 grandnieces and nephews; and his second family, the nurses of 4A at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Their care and love over the last 11 years will never be forgotten. Recently, one of the doctors said that Ev had become part of the hospital fabric and part of the hospital family. The Greer family will forever be grateful to all who so lovingly cared for and about our precious brother. He was a kind and gentle soul.
Family flowers only. Donations to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundations or any charity.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Sydney Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. The funeral will be held at St. Andrews Church on Bentinck St., Sydney, at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 2. Interment at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Alexander (Sandy) MacDonald
74, New Waterford
Alexander (Sandy) MacDonald, 74, of 345 Baker St., New Waterford, passed away in the presence of his loving family Sunday, July 30, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, after a lengthy illness.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late John A. and Margaret (MacLellan) MacDonald. Sandy worked in the coal mines for forty-six years until his retirement from Devco in 1988. His favourite hobby was gardening and his pride and joy were his grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife Mary MacDonald; daughters, Margaret, San Francisco, Sandra (Bernie) MacLeod, River Ryan; sons, Kenny (Maureen), Brantford, Ont., and Bert, at home; three grandchildren, Nolan MacLeod and Courtney and Trevor MacDonald, also by special little friend Kristin Welton. Surviving also are a sister Ella (Francis), Detroit; three brothers, Allan (Doris), Collie (Mary) and Francis, all of New Waterford, also several nieces and nephews and by a step-sister Lexie (Pius) Graham and step-brother Leonard (Savina) MacNeil, New Waterford.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by a granddaughter Amanda Nicole MacLeod, a brother Angus (Curly) MacDonald, step-mother Catherine (MacNeil) MacDonald, two step-sisters, Mary Kennedy and Annie MacIntyre and a step-brother Joe MacNeil.
Visitation for the late Mr. MacDonald will take place Wednesday, Aug. 2, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, at Mount Carmel Church with Father Donald McGillivray officiating. Burial will be held in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
Members of the KOC in New Waterford are asked to gather for prayers Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
