Daisy Barbara Hickey
80, Glace Bay
Daisy Barbara Hickey, 80 of 200 Reserve St., Glace Bay, passed away Tuesday, August 1, 2000, at her residence.
Born in Little Bay, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Bessie (Marshall) Milley.
Daisy was a member of the Bethel Pentecostal Tabernacle Church, Glace Bay.
Daisy will be sadly missed by her sons, Bernie (Donna), North West Arm, Terry (Andrea) and a special grandson, Terance of Glace Bay; sisters, Bessie (Frank) Nobel, Goldine Loveridge; brothers, Lorne (Madeline), Freeman (Mabel), Gordon (Marion), all living in Newfoundland.
Daisy was predeceased by her husband, Bernard Hickey; sisters, Maude Snow, Nina Wells; brother, Lewis Milley.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday), August 2 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 3 at 2 p.m. in the Bethel Pentecostal Tabernacle, Glace Bay, with Pastor Scott Anderson officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney/Glace Bay Highway.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palliative Care Society or the Canadian Cancer Society.
Joseph A. Hood
Little Bras d'Or West
Joseph A. Hood of Little Bras d’Or West, passed away Tuesday, August 1, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born at Little Bras d’Or West, he was the son of the late Wilson and Maria (Ross) Hood. He was a member and elder of St. Andrew’s United Church, Little Bras d’Or West.
In Joe’s earlier years, he was employed with the Bras d’Or Coal Company. He retired from Marine Atlantic working as a stevedore after several years of service.
He is survived by three daughters, Dorothy (Mrs. Daniel O’Handley), Little Bras d’Or, Mary Lou (Mrs. Darryl Jessome), George’s River and Joan Lewis, Halifax; one son, William (Vida), Port Hawkesbury; three sisters, Aeris (Mrs. Gerald MacMillan), North Sydney, Adeline Sturmy, Baddeck, Mary Christensen, Grand Bend, Ont.; three brothers, Bob and John, both of North Sydney and Mullins, Little Bras d’Or. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews and his good friend, Evelyn; eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Mary Robinson in 1986 and one brother, William.
The late Mr. Hood will have no visitation, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in St. Andrew’s United Church, Little Bras d’Or West, with Rev. Allen Hallett and Rev. Richie Robinson officiating. Burial in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.

Ann Frances (Nan) MacDonald
80, Halifax
Anne Frances (Nan) MacDonald, 80, of Halifax, died on Monday, July 31, 2000, in the QEII Health Sciences Centre.
Born in Glace Bay, N.S. on September 14, 1919, she was a daughter of the late William R. and Sarah (MacLeod) MacDonald. She worked for several years for the Federal Government in Ottawa and following graduation from Acadia University, she taught in the Business Education Departments at Bridgewater High School and at Dartmouth High School, and has resided in Halifax for the last 32 years. She was a member of Fort Massey United Church and was an active member of their choir and the United Church Women until her physical disability prohibited active participation.
She is survived by a sister, (Mrs. Gordon Hillier of Baddeck, N.S.) and a brother (W. Ronald of Wolfville, N.S.) as well as several nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, August 4, 2000, at Patton’s Funeral Chapel on Union Street, Glace Bay, N.S. with the Reverend Duncan Roach officiating. Burial will take place at the family plot in Black Brook Cemetery, Port Morien, Nova Scotia.
Colleen "Dixie" Reid
Sydney
Colleen “Dixie” Reid, 72, of 2 Xavier Drive, Sydney, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Amherst, she was the daughter of the late Oscar and Ruth (Wheeler) Geldart.
She was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish, Sydney. She was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier University in 1950 and also the Aberdeen Hospital School of Nursing Class of 1953.
For many years Dixie worked as a nursing instructor at St. Rita Hospital School of Nursing. She was an active board member for both St. Rita Hospital and the MacGillivray Guest Home.
Surviving are her husband Dr. Bill; three daughters, Ruth (Mrs. Michael Willoughby), Caesarea, Ont., Diane (Mrs. Ed Petruskavich), Sydney, Laurie, Bedford; two sons, William (Donna) and Chris (Cheryl), both of Dartmouth; one brother, Gary (Maureen), Montreal. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Amy, Kendra, Jonathan, Grant and Myles.
She was predeceased by her older brother Oliver “Buddy.”
The late Mrs. Reid will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, second level, on Wednesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Saint Anthony Daniel Church with Rev. Barrett Clare-Johnson officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to C.B. Palliative Care Society or the MacGillivray Guest Home.
Adele (Shebib) Flynn
86, Sydney
Adele (Shebib) Flynn, 86, passed away Tuesday, August 1, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, N.S., surrounded by her loving family. She was a resident of the Cove Guest Home and a former resident of 325 Bentinck St., Sydney. Affectionately known by her many relatives and friends alike as “Aunt Adele,” she will always be remembered for her generosity and kindness.
Born in North Sydney in 1913, she was the daughter of Martha (Haddad) and George Shebib. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Sydney and a lifetime member of the CWL.
She is survived and will be sadly missed by her children, Matthew (Patricia) Donovan, Coxheath, Martha (Bob) Taylor, Fredericton, N.B., Anne Leaist, London, Ont., and nephew, Jeffery (Brenda) Shebib, London, Ont., who resided with her. She is also survived by her stepchildren, Marguerite (Murray) MacDougall, Ironville, C.B., Rebecca (Sananda) Sukermaran, Patricia Charnell, Kevin (Paula) Flynn, all of Vancouver, B.C., Bernadette (Ralph) MacNeil, Dieppe, N.B. and Jim (Sylvia) Flynn, Halifax, N.S. Also surviving are her sisters, Lily Mercer, Sydney, Eva Shebib, Sydney and her brother, Moses Shebib, Ontario. Surviving as well are 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Jim Donovan; her second husband, Fergus Flynn; sisters, Rosie Connors, Mamie Verge, Alice Richards, Laura Hanna; brothers, Alex, David and Louis Shebib and step-grandson, Seamus Flynn.
Visitation was held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2 at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, main level, George St., Sydney. Funeral mass will be held 9 a.m. today (Thursday) at St. Joseph’s Church, Cabot St., Sydney, with Father Norman MacPhee officiating. Burial will take place at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to The Cove Guest Home, Alzheimer Society or a charity of choice.
Violet Emma MacDonald
78, Sydney
Violet Emma MacDonald, 78 of George St., Sydney, passed away at home, on Wednesday, August 2, 2000.
Born in Sydney, Violet was a daughter of the late Robert and Annie (Matheson) Bauer. She was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, Sydney.
Surviving are her daughter, Anna (Larry) Myatt, Sydney; sons, Tommy (Nita) and John, both of Sydney; brother, Murray, Sydney; four grandchildren, Amanda (Luke) Ross, Tommy, Trevor and Shane and one great-grandchild, Emelia Ross.
Violet was predeceased by her husband, Thomas (Tim) in 1982.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel today (Thursday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel on Friday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Neil J. MacLean officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
