Paul MacEachern
Mira/Scotchtown
Paul MacEachern, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 2, 2000, at the age of 75 years in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
He was a resident of Hornes Road, Mira and a former resident of Scotchtown. A man of great faith, strength, integrity, compassion and kindness, Paul was a great inspiration to all who knew him.
Paul was born in New Waterford on February 19,1925. He was the son of the late John and Margaret (MacLellan) MacEachern. Paul served with the Cape Breton Highlanders in active duty in the United Kingdom, Italy and Northwest Europe. He was wounded in action in Monte Casino, Italy. He was active in the Cape Breton Highlanders Association where he served as vice-president. He was also a member of the senate, North Nova Scotia Highlanders, 2nd Battalion (Cape Breton). He worked in No. 12 and No. 18 collieries. He was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Louisbourg and Sydney River and a lifetime member of the New Democratic Party.
Surviving are his loving wife, the former Margaret MacKinnon; children, Jane (Tony) Matlock, Mira, Sharon Barry, Warren (Janet) MacEachern, both of Sydney and Peter (Shelley) MacEachern, Edmonton; 10 grandchildren, Allan, Paul, Maria, Peter, John-Paul, Lisa, Sean, Craig, Timothy and Brianna; one great-grandchild Nolan; brothers Donald Hughie (D.H.), New Waterford, Charlie, Ontario and Allan, New Brunswick.
He was predeceased by son John; brother, George and sisters, Mary Ann, Theresa, Effie and Sadie.
Visitation is in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Homes, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, Friday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday 10 a.m. in St Michael’s Church, River Ryan. Interment to follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any charity. The Third Degree and Fourth Degree members of the Knights of Columbus are asked to assemble in the funeral home on Friday, 7:30 p.m. for prayers.
Raymond James Mackie
66, Gardiner Mines
Raymond Joseph Mackie, age 66, a former resident of Gardiner Mines, passed away Monday, July 31, 2000, in the New Waterford Hospital.
Born in Gardiner Mines, he was the son of the late Patrick and Margaret (Gouthro) Mackie. Mr. Mackie was a member of St. James Parish, Gardiner Mines. A mechanic by trade he was a longtime employee of Forum Service Station, Sydney. He was a very devoted member of Alcoholics Anonymous.
Raymond is survived by three sisters-in-law; many nieces and nephews; several aunts and one uncle. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Melvin, John B., Neil and Albert.
There will be no visitation, cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held Thursday, 11 a.m. in St. James Church, Gardiner Mines with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery, Gardiner Mines.
Any memorials in Raymond’s memory may be made to a charity of choice.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
Roy Dalton Douglas McLean
1922-2000
Roy Dalton Douglas McLean, 78, formerly of Glace Bay, passed away Monday, July 31, 2000, in Edmonton, Alberta.
Born in 1922, he was the son of the late George and Victoria (Andrews) McLean. Roy was a veteran of the Second World War. He was a member of the R.C.A.F.C. as well as a legion member in Edmonton. He was an Anglican in faith.
Survived by his loving wife Florence (nee Skanes) McLean; daughter Virginia (George) MacKeigan; sons, Bob (Judy) and Douglas, all of Glace Bay, and Michael (Dorothy), Sydney; 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by his sister Edith.
Cremation has taken place. The late Mr. McLean’s son Bob went to Edmonton to attend the memorial service which took place Wednesday, Aug. 2.

John Ronald Rankin
Port Hawkesbury
John Ronald Rankin, of Port Hawkesbury, died Tuesday, August 1, 2000 at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax.
Born in Inverness, he was a son of the late Michael and Agatha (MacLennan) Rankin. He worked for many years for St. Joseph’s Church before joining Canada Post, where he was still employed at the time of his death. He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church.
Survived by brothers, Joe, Guelph, Ont., Steve (Carol), Halifax, Lawrence (Brenda), Edmonton, Alta.; sisters, Sr. Florence, CND, Sydney Mines, Wilma (Ben) MacIsaac, Jessie MacIsaac, Joanne (Angus) MacDonald, all of Hamilton, Ont. and numerous nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by a brother, Peter (Pat); sisters, Chris (Archie) MacMaster, Peggy (John) Chisholm; brother-in-law, Alex MacIsaac; sister-in-law, Alice.
Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday from St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Bill Burke officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.

Sr. Martha Michael Broderick
91, Antigonish
Sr. Martha Michael Broderick, 91, a Sister of Saint Martha of Bethany Motherhouse, Antigonish, died Thursday, August 3, 2000, at Bethany.
Born in Matapedia, QC, and baptized Alice Martha, she was fifth oldest in a family of nine. She was the daughter of the late Michael Broderick and her mother, Isabel (MacDonald) Broderick, both of Kedgwick, New Brunswick.
Sister Martha Michael entered the Sisters of Saint Martha, February 4, 1939, with a business diploma from the Business College in Moncton, N.B. In 1944, she obtained her RN after training at St. Martha’s Hospital. In 1952, a diploma in teaching/supervision in schools of nursing from the University of Calgary, Alta. and 1967, a diploma in Nursing Service Administration from Dalhousie University, Halifax, N.S.
Sister served in the nursing field for forty-two years with her first year of nursing at the then J.L. MacIsaac Memorial Home (Kirk house-annex of St. Martha’s Hospital) in Antigonish. Sister’s nursing continued in hospitals east and west, St. Michael’s, Lethbridge, Alta., St. Peter’s, Melville, Sask., Mineral Springs, Banff, Alta., St. Rita’s Hospital, Sydney and the RK Macdonald Nursing House, Antigonish, N.S. In 1974, she returned to Bethany and established the health department and served as its first nurse until her retirement in 1987. She remained active in various duties at the motherhouse until 1998.
She is survived by one sister, Gertrude Mahoney of Moncton, and one brother, Rev. Bernard M. of Miramichi, N.B.
She was predeceased by five sisters, Isabel, Kathleen Stearns, Margaret, Mary and Patricia Mahoney and one brother, John.
The remains are resting at Bethany after 1 p.m. Friday where a Bible Vigil will be held Friday, August 4th, at 7:30 p.m.
Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 5th, at 2 p.m. in Bethany Chapel.
Arrangements are under the direction of MacIsaac Funeral Home.
Paul Carroll

Relatives and friends of the late Paul Carroll of Braintree, Ma., who passed away on June 29, 2000, are invited to attend a Memorial Service from Holy Redeemer Church, Victoria Road in Whitney Pier on Saturday, Aug. 5, at 11 a.m.
Following the service, refreshments will be available for family and friends in the church function room.
Mary Theresa (Mary Nellie) MacDonald
71, New Waterford
Mary Theresa MacDonald (Mary Nellie), 71, 579 St. Joseph St., New Waterford, died Thursday, August 3, 2000, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Dominion, she was the daughter of the late Colin and Sarah “Sadie” (MacNeil) MacDonald. Mary was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish and at one time, was an active member of the Altar Society. She was president of the Ladies Progressive Conservative Association, chairperson of the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital Board, served on the Health Services Commission, N.S.A.H.O. She was very involved with hospitality of the New Waterford Coal Bowl. Mary touched the hearts of everyone who knew her; always a smile and a kind word.
Surviving are her husband, Neil Joseph MacDonald; three daughters, Valerie (Barrie) Campbell, Dominion, Robin (Jack) Murphy, Eastern Passage; Bernadette (Robert) Drinovz, Sydney; two sons, Terry (Kathy), Dartmouth; Adam (Joan), New Waterford; four brothers, Dan “Frecks” MacDonald, Dominion, Colin “Frankie” (Marie), Reserve, John “Pinky”, Dominion, Joe MacDonald (Betty), Antigonish; two sisters, Johnena MacDonald and Mary Margaret “Maggie” MacDonald, both of Dominion; eight grandchildren, Scott, Kelley, Christa, Liam, Marilou, Richard, Daniel, Mathew; special cousin, Margie Doucette, and friend, Susan MacDonald.
She was predeceased by two sons in infancy, Richard and Stephen and one daughter at birth.
Visitation is in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Homes, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, Saturday, 7-9 p.m., and Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Monday, 11 a.m. in Mount Carmel Church, Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
