Aloysiws Campbell
62, Main-a-Dieu
Aloysius Campbell, 62, of Main-a-Dieu, passed away suddenly at home on August 3, 2000.
Born in Main-a-Dieu, he was the son of the late Elias and Loretta (Lahey) Campbell.
Aloysius was a talented and gifted accordion player. He fished all his life up until his retirement. He was a very creative and ingenuitive person and using this ability he lent a helping hand whenever needed.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years Betty (Pellerin), one son Roy; daughters, Sissy (Bill), Hamilton, Sherry (Gilles), Cheticamp; three brothers, Elias (Charlotte), Thomas (Martha) Main-a-Dieu, Angus (Lilly) Louisbourg; ten sisters, Elizabeth (Tom) Campbell, Eileen (Bob) Lavin, Tish Giacomine, all of Main-a-Dieu, Delores (York) Coles, Naisha (Jack) Richards, Sydney, Lucy (Pat) Sallanzzo, Halifax, Nona (Frank) Gibson, Ottawa, Percilla (Gordie) Foster, Victoria, B.C., Catherine Backwell, Oshawa, Loretta (John) Parsons, Louisbourg. He is also survived by six grandchildren, James, Jacob, Chelsea, Lucas, Blair-Dawn and Amber.
He was predeceased by two sons, Blair and Donnie, sisters Mary, Philamina and one brother Victor.
Visitation was held on Sunday 7-9 p.m. and will be held Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Parish, Main-a-Dieu. Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday 2 p.m. at Immaculate Conception, Main-a-Dieu, with Father Conrad Edwards officiating. Interment at parish cemetery. Arrangements under the direction of W.A. Chant Funeral Home.
Jessie Ellen Fitzgerald
89, Dingwall
Jessie Ellen Fitzgerald, 89, of Dingwall, N.S., passed away Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at Buchanan Memorial Hospital, Neil’s Harbour.
Born at South Harbour, Victoria County, she was the daughter of the late David and Abigail Pentecost. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Dingwall, and was also a member of the St. Joseph’s CWL. Mrs. Fitzgerald was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are her four daughters, Frances (Mrs. John McEvoy), Dingwall, Kaye (Mrs. Don Brown), New Brunswick, Anne (Mrs. Louis Reny), Quebec, Dollena (Mrs. Freeman MacKinnon), Dartmouth; five sons, William (Norma), Neil’s Harbour, John (Sylvia), South Harbour, Trusedale, Ontario, Robert (Marjorie), Dartmouth, Henry (Audrey), Dingwall; 34 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Alexander, daughter Mary, son James, six sisters and six brothers.
Visitation will be held today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Dingwall. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph’s Church with Rev. Martin MacDougall officiating. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Charles Joseph Hawley
81, Ingonish Beach
Mr. Charles Joseph Hawley, 81, of Ingonish Beach, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at Buchanan Memorial Hospital, Neil’s Harbour.
Born at Ingonish Beach, he was the son of the late Jimmy and Annie May (Doyle) Hawley.
He was a member of St. Peter’s Church, Ingonish, and was employed with the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, retiring with 24 years service. He was also a lobster fisherman for a number of years. He was a veteran of the Second World War and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. #91, Ingonish Beach.
He is survived by his wife, the former Eileen Francis Whitty; daughter, Darlene (Mrs. Grant MacDonald), New Glasgow; sons, James, Ingonish Beach, Everett, Fort McMurray, Wayne (Fern), Ingonish, Andrew (Clara), Saskatoon; sister, Dorothy (Dot) Doucette, Ingonish, and eight grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son Michael, sisters, Emma Hickey, Annie Jane Penny, Gladys MacDonald, Mary Parsons, and brothers, Alex and Cecil.
Visitation will be in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Ingonish, today from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday 3 p.m. in St. Peter’s Church, with Rev. John Morrison officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
As memorials, donations may be made to the charity of choice.
George R. Hillier
99, Sydney Mines
George Richard Hillier, 99, a resident of Shore Road, Sydney Mines, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Lamaline, Newfoundland, he was the son of the late George and Rebecca (Hepditch) Hillier. Prior to his retirement George worked as a foreman with C.N. Marine and in his earlier years was employed with the Newfoundland Railway. He was a member and Honorary Elder of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney. He was an avid gardener and was an honorary member of the North Sydney Garden Club, a member of the C.N. Pensioners Club and he enjoyed sport fishing.
Surviving are two sons, George (Marjorie) and Harold (Nellie) both of California; three daughters, Mildred (Gordon) Lindsay, Smith Falls, Ont., Dorothy (Joseph) Kendall, Lochbroom, Pictou, N.S., Ruth (Dick) Cameron, New Glasgow, N.S.; two step-daughters, Dorothy Foye, Betty (Ted) DeCristofaro, both of Quincy, Mass.; a step-son Bobby (Ruthie) Petzoldt, Quincy, Mass. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and a number of great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife Elizabeth Kendall and by his second wife Nellie (Conway) Petzoldt, by four daughters, Marjorie Nelson, Maryon Ross, Joan and Ida Florence, a sister Blanche Gallop, two brothers, Joshua and Harold, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A private family visitation will be held in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, North Sydney. Funeral Service 2 p.m. Monday at St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney, with Rev. David Luker officiating. Burial to follow at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the St. Matthew Wesley United Church.
Anastasia Evangeline (Anne) MacDonald
78, Glace Bay
n Sunday, August 6, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, eternal rest was granted to Anastasia Evangeline (Anne) MacDonald of Glace Bay, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Port Morien, she was the daughter of the late William James Hawley and Effie Ann (McDermid) Hawley.
She was a long-time member of the Glace Bay Kinette Club as well as a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Outreach Society for Senior Citizens and the Coal Town Chorus.
She is survived by sons, Darrell (Theresa), L’Ardoise, Keith (Simone), Dominion; daughter, Kimberley (Kerry) McCormick, Glace Bay; brother, Kenneth (Mora) Hawley, Sydney. Grandma also leaves to mourn, grandchildren, Neal, Alana, Margaret Ann, Kaily, Lauren, Stacey, and Dennis; great-grandchildren, Nicole, Devin, and Anastasia, also several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Ron, daughter, Dianne, sisters, Bridget, Marie, Zita, and Agnes, brothers, George, Joseph, and Basil.
Visitation will take place Monday from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4. 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. from St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay, with Rev. Doug Murphy officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Catherine A. (Cassie) MacDonald
96, St. Peter's
Catherine A. (Cassie) MacDonald, 96, a resident of Richmond Villa, St. Peter’s, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.
Born in Grand Anse, Richmond County, she was the daughter of the late Murdock J. and Margaret (MacKenzie) MacDonald.
She was a member of the Black River United Church and lived in the Richmond Villa, St. Peter’s, for the past 24 years.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Hugh John, step-son James, sisters, Margaret, Annie, and Christine, brothers, Hughie Neil, Kennie, and Alex.
Visitation will be today (Monday) from 2-9 p.m. in the Alex A. Morrison Funeral Home, St. Peter’s. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday in Black River United Church, with Rev. Bill MacLennan officiating. Interment in the MacPherson Cemetery, Grand Anse.
Donations may be made to the Black River United Church or a charity of choice.
