James (Jim) MacDougall
63, Dominion
James (Jim) MacDougall, 63, of 62 Ocean Ave., Dominion, passed away Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at the QEII Hospital in Halifax.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of Mattie (Anderson) MacDougall and the late James MacDougall.
Jim was an elder of Chalmers United Church, Dominion, and was very active in church affairs. One of the positions he held at the church was that of treasurer. He was retired from Devco, where he was employed as payroll supervisor. He was a member of the Dominion Fire Department also the Heritage Society in Dominion. Jim was the former District Commissioner of the Boy Scouts. He was an avid gardener and he also loved doing woodwork. Jim was a loving poppy to his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife the former Marilyn Scott; two sons, Shaun (Darlene), Cole Harbour, Eric, at home; one brother, Brian (Andrea), Dartmouth; three sisters, Eileen (Ed) Thomson, Chatham, Ont., Lois (Art) Birchenough, Oakville, Ont., Shirley (Jerry) Wadman, Glace Bay; four grandchildren, Cory, Aaron, Meaghan, and Rebecca.
Visitation will take place Monday 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be Wednesday 2 p.m. at Chalmers United Church, Dominion. His remains will be removed to the church at 12 p.m. on Wednesday. Burial in the parish cemetery. Rev. Eric Lynk and Bill Matthews officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chalmers United Church or a charity of choice.
Louise Marie McGean
St. Peter's
Louise formerly of L’Ardoise, Richmond County, passed away peacefully at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston, Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000.
Born in L’Ardoise on Sept. 24, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Malcolm J. and Laura (Boyd) MacNeil.
She will be forever missed and lovingly remembered by husband Amos E. McGean; daughters, Maura Calder (Terry), Karen McGrath (David), Stephanie McGean (Rodney).
After working in Halifax she returned to her family home in L’Ardoise married and raised her family. She was employed for several years as a para-professional with the Richmond County School Board. Louise was a very active community-minded person. She was a charter member and life-member of the St. Peter’s and area Lioness Club having served three terms as president. A charter member and life member of the Strait Richmond East Hospital Auxiliary serving two terms as president, a member of the Co-ordinating Council of Hospital Auxiliaries for the Strait Richmond Hospital, a member of the Ladies Social Club in L’Ardoise, a member of the CWL in L’Ardoise having served as president and a former member of the Ladies auxiliary Royal Canadian Legion, Br. 110, L’Ardoise.
She is also survived by her sister Gertrude Pertus (John), Halifax; six grandchildren, Samantha, Ainslie, Sean, Breann, Brittany, and Gillian, and several nieces, nephews and numerous relatives.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Mary Fraser MacNeil, R.N., Beth Israel Hospital, New Jersey, Bernice Doucette (Gordon), Ingonish, N.S. and her twin brother Bernard MacNeil (Alberte), Dorval, Quebec.
Visitation will be today (Monday) from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the L’Ardoise Funeral Home, L’Ardoise. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, at Holy Guardian Angels Parish Church, L’Ardoise, with Rev. John MacIntyre officiating.
Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Richmond Villa Activities Department, St. Peter’s, the Dr. Wm. B. Kingston Memorial Clinic, L’Ardoise, N.S. Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Alex A. Morrison Funeral Home, St. Peter’s.
Bernard Desmond (Des) Pendergast
68, Sydney
Bernard Desmond (Des) Pendergast, 68, passed away peacefully at home August 5, 2000, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Sydney, August 14, 1931, he was the son of the late Bill (the Captain) and Elizabeth (Pottie) Pendergast. Des was employed at Sydney Steel Plant for 41 years where he made many close friends. He retired in August 1989.
Des is survived by his wife of 48 years, Vera (Cassell), and his five children, Mary (Mike Keating), Rose (Donnie Courage), Carol Wayne (Kim Collette), and Allan, Moncton, (Catherine Keough). He also has seven grandchildren, Tim Courage, Jennifer, Erin, Bridget, and Devin Keating, Corey and Brett Pendergast; one sister, Anne Feetham (Pyke), Halifax, and a special aunt, Loretta Kozera, Sydney.
Des will be sadly missed by family and friends.
Visitation was held Sunday 7-9 p.m. and will be held today 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral will be Tuesday 11 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Church with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Burial in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Margaret Isabel Preston
73, Baddeck
Margaret Isabel Preston, 73, Baddeck, died August 5, 2000, at Alderwood Rest Home.
Born in Baddeck Forks, she was a daughter of the late David and Catherine (Buchanan) Garland. She was a member of St. Andrew’s United Church, Baddeck Forks. In her earlier years she was a teacher at Fourchu and North River before moving to the United States where she was employed until her retirement as clerk and floor manager at Woolworth’s Department Store.
She is survived by brothers, Roy (Barbara), Baddeck Forks, Malcolm (Viola), Baddeck, and Whitfield (Janice), Hantsport; and sister, Ethel MacLean, Middle River; sisters-in-law, Kaye Garland, Yankee Line, and Barbara Garland, New Glasgow. Aunt Isabel will be fondly remembered by her numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Duncan Preston, brothers, John W., and Robert, sisters, Mabel Tillinghast and Katherine Carmichael.
Cremation has taken place. No visitation by request. Service to be held at St. Andrew’s United Church, Baddeck Forks, on Tuesday, Aug. 15, at 2 p.m. with Rev. David Lutes officiating. Visitation with the family in the church at 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or St. Andrew’s Cemetery.

Frances Georgina Burton
72, Sydney
Frances Georgia Burton, 72, of Sydney, passed away Monday, August 7, 2000, at home.
Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Grace (Anthony) Hardy. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Sydney.
She is survived by her husband, Wilbert (Bill); two daughters, Dawn Burton and Marie Burton, both of Sydney; one son, Gordon (Ann) Burton, Dartmouth; three sisters, Norma (Mrs. James Postlethwaite), Sydney, Lyle Anthony and Freda Anthony, both of Ottawa; one brother, Ross Anthony, Sydney; four grandchildren, Brandy Buckingham, Elizabeth Burton, Matthew Burton, Andrew Burton.
She was predeceased by one brother, Gordon Leslie in infancy.
The late Mrs. Burton will have no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel with Rev. Dan MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
Loretta (Beaver) Edwards
67, Dominion
Loretta (Beaver) Edwards, 67, of 83 Ocean Ave., Dominion, passed away at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, Monday, August 7, 2000.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of Anastasia and the late John Beaver. Mrs. Edwards was a member of St. Eugene’s Church, Dominion. She enjoyed spending time tole painting and was an avid bingo player. Although Loretta had no children of her own she raised her niece, Karen (Neil) Bach as a daughter with whom she resided and a foster child Joan Hann, New Waterford. Also surviving are four sisters, Leona (Doll) Poirier, Reserve, Marie (Freeman) Lynk, Glace Bay, Helen Spencer, Toronto and Millie (Eric) Young, Kingston, Ont. She will be sadly missed by her special “Little Man”, her grandson, Ryan. Also surviving are her two foster grandchildren, Crystal and Jason Hann and a foster great-grandchild, Hadley Leonard Jennex Jr. and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her father, Loretta was predeceased by her husband, Leonard Edwards, a brother, Jackie Beaver and a brother and sister in infancy, Walter James and Shirley Viola.
Visitation for Mrs. Edwards will be Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm.. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Eugene’s Church with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Memorials in Loretta’s memory may be made to the Heart and Lung Association or the Canadian Cancer Society.
