Arthina (Tina) McGillivray
51, New Waterford
Arthina (Tina) McGillivray, 51, of 663 King St., New Waterford, died Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
In memory of the late Mrs. McGillivray, a trust fund has been set up for Tina’s two daughters, Alicha and Crystal. Any donations should be in care of Bill and Anna Marsh, 862-8986.
Charles Frederick Morley
92, Liverpool
Charles Frederick Morley, 92, of Liverpool, Queens County, formerly of Sydney and Middleton, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at the Queens General Hospital in Liverpool.
Born in Westmount, Sydney, Cape Breton, he was a son of the late James and Margaret (Estano) Morley.
He served during the Second World War with the RCAF. He worked as a bookkeeper and accountant for a car dealership for many years. He attended the Zion United Church in Liverpool. He enjoyed oil painting and gardening greatly.
He is survived by his wife, the former Anna B. Morrison; three daughters, Alice Bringle, Alaska, Judith MacQueen, Sydney, and Ruth Jamieson, Liverpool; a son, Charles, Dartmouth; a sister, Doris Morley, Sydney, and five grandchildren.
He was predeceased by brothers, William and David.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers Funeral Home in Liverpool. Funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Chandlers Funeral Home in Liverpool, with Rev. Joanne McFadden officiating. Burial will be in the Zion United Church Cemetery, Payzant Street. Immediate family flowers only. Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Arnold Phillips
73, Margaree Centre
Arnold Phillips, 73, of Margaree Centre, passed away peacefully with his loving wife by his side Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, at Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital.
Born in Margaree Centre, Arnold was the son of the late Henry and Olive (Hall) Phillips.
Arnold worked as a pulp cutter for many years before his retirement in 1975. He was a member of Wilson United Church, Margaree Centre. He was also former member of the Wilson United Church Men’s Club.
He was the last surviving member of his family.
He is survived and will be sadly missed by his devoted wife of 47 years, Mable (Timmins) Phillips; by a special nephew, John Hannigan (Peggy) and special grandniece, Jenny Lee, who resided with him. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his daughter, Barbra Catherine and a sister, Hazel.
The remains are resting at Wilson United Church Shalom Room, Margaree Centre, today (Wednesday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 17 at 2 p.m. at Wilson United Church, Margaree Centre, with Rev. Gordon MacLean officiating. Burial at the Congregational Cemetery, Margaree Centre.
Donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Wilson United Church Fund.
Arrangements are under the direction of MacAskill’s Funeral Home, Baddeck.
James (Jim) Sheppard
84, Glace Bay
Mr. James H. Sheppard, 84, a resident of Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay, and former long-time resident of Catherine Street, Glace Bay, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late George A. and Jane (Bartlett) Sheppard.
Jim was a member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay, and a member of the church choir for 70 years. He also served as choir director for many years. He was noted for his involvement in music and sang in many local choirs. He was also involved in the musical Rotary production in the area and was involved in singing in competitions with the barbershop quartets.
Jim was a former employee with the federal Department of Fisheries as area manager and inspector.
He was a veteran of the Second World War and served overseas with the Royal Canadian Army, and was a member with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 3, Glace Bay. He was also a member of the Royal Yacht Club in Sydney.
He is survived by two daughters, Sharon (Mrs. Joseph Ledger), Oakville, Ont., Barbara (Mrs. Robert Patterson), Saudi Arabia; five sons, Carl (Flora), Boston, Gerald (Dolores), Boston, James (Ruth), Winnipeg, George (Roberta) and Robert (Gail), both of Glace Bay; two sisters, Margo Ranking, Oakville, Ont., and Freda Batah, Hamilton, Ont. Also surviving are 21 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, the former Josita Boudreau, three brothers, George, Omar and Louis and two sisters in infancy.
Visitation for the late Mr. Sheppard will be Thursday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be Friday 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Anglican Church with the Rev. Margaret Collins officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery at Maple Avenue, Glace Bay.
Any donations in Jim’s memory may be made to St. Mary’s Church or a charity of choice.
Annie Verschuren
75, North Sydney
Johanna (Annie) Verschuren, of Seaview Drive, North Sydney, died peacefully at the Northside General Hospital on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000.
She was born in Holland, the daughter of the late Johannes and Antionetta (Ronnes) Cornelissen.
She came to Canada in 1951 with her husband Anthony (Tony), who predeceased her in 1984. They worked together on the family dairy farm in Upper North Sydney (now Seaview Drive).
During the last 16 years of her life she became more actively involved with her community. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish in North Sydney. She did volunteer work with the Catholic Women’s League (CWL). She spent many happy hours as a Northside Guest Home Volunteer and was a member of the Northside Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by five children, Dorothy, married to Bill Tennant; John (Turk), married to Peggy McMillan; Annette, married to Erik Haites; Andy, married to Elizabeth Gouthro and Steven, married to Lana Ford. She had seven grandchildren, Troy, Aron, Zack, Kyle, Rene, Ashley and Tony. Five sisters and three brothers in Holland also survive her.
She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony (Tony), two brothers, a sister and a sister in infancy.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass will be held Friday 10 a.m. from St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. There will be a celebration of her life at the Knights of Columbus Hall located on Pleasant Street, North Sydney, following the funeral.
Memorial donations may be made to the Northside General Hospital Foundation or the C.B. Healthcare Complex Palliative Care Service.
Margaret (Peggy) Rose (Bagnell) Kinslow
86, Forchu, C.B. County
Margaret (Peggy) Rose (Bagnell) Kinslow, 86, of Forchu and formerly of Glace Bay, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at the Breton Bay Nursing Home, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Wesley and Mary Bell (Matheson) Bagnell.
Mrs. Kinslow was a member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay and of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Framboise. In her earlier years, she was active in St. Paul’s WMS and was president at one time and a member of the Rebekah Lodge, Glace Bay.
Mrs. Kinslow is survived by her husband, Ernest Kinslow; daughters, Donelda (Allister) Spencer, Port Morien, Valerie Kinslow, Montreal, Quebec; son, Robert (Elaine) Kinslow, Wrentham, Mass.; sister, Pearl MacDonald, Sydney; brother, Handford, Levack, Ont.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by brothers, Daniel Bagnell, William Bagnell, Sidney Bagnell and one grandchild, Robbie.
There will be no visitation. Family members will meet friends in the foyer of St. Paul’s Church, Saturday from 1 p.m. until funeral services at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Eric Lynk officiating. Burial will be in Black Brook Cemetery, Port Morien.
Donations may be made to St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay or the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
