Mary Theresa Battiste
Eskasoni
Mary Theresa Battiste, 59, of Eskasoni, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Antigonish, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Mary Sylliboy Goo Goo Battiste.
She was a member of Holy Family Parish, Eskasoni.
Surviving are four sisters, Mary Jane Dennis, Helen Francis, both of Eskasoni, Mary Agnes Gloade, Truro, and Annie Brooks, Indian Brook; two brothers, Frederick (Frances) Battiste and Stephen (Jean) Battiste, both of Eskasoni. She is also survived by her nephew, Frederick Jr. Battiste, with whom she resided. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by five sisters, Nancy, Mary Mae, Mable, Catherine and Julia, four brothers, William Goo Goo, Peter, Francis Joseph and Samuel.
The late Ms. Battiste will have visitation at her late residence, 132 Shore Rd., Eskasoni, after 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Holy Family Church, Eskasoni, with Fr. Robert MacNeil officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
Laura Blanchard

Mrs. Laura Blanchard of Prince Street, Sydney, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Blanchard will be in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel Thursday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Friday at St. Theresa’s Church with Fr. Angus MacDougall officiating. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Society for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, 1838 Main Tree Rd., Suite No. 515, Baltimore, Md., 21208, Attn. Research Foundation, or the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Charles Freeman Jackson
74, Sydney
Charles Freeman Jackson, 74, of MacLean Street, Sydney, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Ingonish, he was a son of the late James and Emeline (Noseworthy) Jackson.
Charles worked for several years at Sydney Steel and later joined Canada Post as a letter carrier, where he made many friends.
He was well known for his songs and never refused an opportunity to entertain, which he did willingly for many causes, The Cove, New Dawn, Salvation Army, Highland Manor, to mention a few.
Charlie’s home was a refuge to many friends and strangers alike. Always a gracious host and entertainer; a trait he maintained until a few hours before his death. His music will long be remembered.
He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas. While in England he had the honour of meeting King George VI. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 28, Ingonish. He was an adherent of the United Church.
Charlie is survived by three sons, Kevin (Geraldine), Bras d’Or, Bruce (Edna) and Frank (Shirley), both of Sydney; one daughter, Margaret, at home; six grandchildren, Kevin, Todd, Glenn, Jason, Terry, Christopher; three great-grandchildren, Joshua, Carl and Cause; one sister, Evelyn (Gordon) MacLeod, Ingonish; two brothers, George (Noreen) and Leonard (Grace), both of Sydney. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews, by whom he was much adored.
He was predeceased by his wife, Annie Mae Murphy, one sister, Margaret Hardy, five brothers, John, Fred, Harry, Alfred, James W. in infancy.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel today (Thursday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with funeral service in the chapel Saturday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Thomas Whent officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Phyllis Marguerite Lynch
Sydney
Phyllis Marguerite Lynch of 35 Richardson Ave., Sydney, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, after a long courageous fight with cancer. She was 75.
Born in Sydney, she was the only daughter of Michael and Gladys (Allen) Sullivan.
She is survived by her loving husband, Don; sons, Michael (Marilyn), Pat (Paula), Tim (Jean). and Casey (Grace). She is also survived by brothers, Mike (Buddy) and Pat Sullivan; Aunt Barbara Allen and a sister-in-law, Mary Lynch. “Moppy” will be missed by granddaughters, Erin, Correen, Meghan, Brianne, Amy, and a grandson, Devin.
Phyllis will be remembered by her many friends for her love of life, dancing, bridge, band, skating and warm beaches.
For many years she worked at the registry of deeds in Sydney where her quick wit and smile will be remembered by many in the legal fraternity.
Visitation will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney, Friday, Aug. 18, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday, Aug. 19 at 11:30 a.m. in St. Anthony Daniel Church, Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Following mass interment will be at St. Andrew’s Cemetery, Boisdale.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made to the Cancer Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Rita Doreen (Sabourin) MacKinnon
63, Sydney
Rita Doreen (Sabourin) MacKinnon, 63, a resident of Vista Heights Seniors Complex, Esplanade, Sydney, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at home.
Born in New Victoria, she was the daughter of the late Jim and Effie (MacKinnon) MacLellan.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, New Victoria.
Surviving are four daughters, Darlene and Debbie Sabourin, both of London, Ont., Muriel Ann Sabourin, New Waterford, Debbie Miles, New Victoria; two sons, Roddie Sabourin, New Waterford, Andy Sabourin, London, Ont.; three brothers, William MacLellan, Sydney, Jimmy MacLellan, Sudbury, Ont. and Donny MacKinnon, New Victoria; sister Margaret MacKinnon, New Waterford; 12 grandchildren, Christina, Candace, Kelsie, Katelynn, William, Jessica, Charmaine, Adam, Angela, Joanna, Samantha and Thomas.
She was predeceased by a sister, Muriel.
She will be sadly missed and never forgotten by her children and grandchildren.
Catherine MacMullin
84, Sydney
Catherine MacMullin, 84, a lifelong resident of 985 Victoria Rd., Whitney Pier, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late John and Veronica (MacIsaac) MacMullin of Glen Morrison.
She was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish, Sydney. She taught school for 35 years at Holy Redeemer Boys’ School, Whitney Pier and helped tutor many students after school to better their grades. She will always be remembered for her kindness, loyalty and generosity.
She is survived by a sister, Cecilia (Mrs. Don Peck), Sydney and also her sister, Mary MacMullin and brother, Neil who both resided with her. She is also survived by a nephew, Joe (Anne) Campbell, Westmount and a grandniece, Lisa Campbell, Calgary.
She was predeceased by three brothers, John H., Donald (Kayo) and Angus and two sisters, Margaret Campbell and Theresa.
The late Miss MacMullin will have visitation today (Thursday) from 7-9 p.m. and Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on the main level of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday in Holy Redeemer Church with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
