Allison E. Steele
46, Bras d’Or
Allison passed away peacefully surrounded by her family, Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at St. Catharines’ Hospital, Ontario.
Born in Bras d’Or, she was the daughter of Audrey Steele and the late Garvin Steele.
Surviving are her loving companion, Ted Simpson, her children, Alana and Steven, all of Port Colborne; her sister, Debbie (George) Young, Georges River; brothers, David (Vivian), Halifax, Bentley (Brenda), Bras d’Or, Jackie, Halifax; also by her sister-in-law, Norma Steele, Sydney.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be held Saturday, Aug. 19 at 2 p.m. in Armstrong’s Funeral Home, Port Colborne.
Funeral mass will be held Saturday, Aug. 26 at St. Joseph’s Parish Church, Bras d’Or at 11 a.m. Burial in St. Joseph’s Parish Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Henry G. Roper
80, Sydney
Henry G. Roper, 80, a resident of 325 Bentinck St., Sydney, died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000.
Born in Ingonish, he was the son of the late Percy and Georgina (Jackson) Roper.
He was employed at Point Edward Naval Base and later with the Department of Public Works, Halifax, until his retirement. He served overseas with the Canadian Armed Forces During the Second World War and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 105.
He is survived by sister, Blanche Roper, Westmount; brother, James Roper, Ingonish.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Ida (Hardy) Roper and brother, Carl.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Burial in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel.
Alex Dan Berritte
89, St. Peter’s
At the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston, Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at the age of 89, passed away Alex Dan Berritte, son of the late James (Jimmy) Berritte and the late Judith Taylor.
He leaves his wife, Sarah Briand, L’Ardoise and his children, Hélène (Jean), Lower Tracadie, N.B., Viola (John) McIntosh, L’Ardoise, Cecil (Peggy), Sydney, Judith (Gerald) Melanson, Calgary, Alta., James (Christine), L’Ardoise, and his beloved grandson with whom he lived, Donnie. He also leaves 16 other grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brother, Willie (Mary) and two sisters, Annebelle (Dan) Sampson, L’Ardoise, and Florence (Cecil) Barry, St. Peter’s.
He was predeceased by one brother, Edward and three sisters, Lena, Alice, and Helen and a son, John.
Visitation 2-9 p.m. Sunday at the L’Ardoise Funeral Home. Funeral mass 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21, at Holy Guardian Angels Parish, L’Ardoise, with Rev. John MacIntyre officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Alex A. Morrison Funeral Home, St. Peter’s.
Alice Carmilita MacEachern
52, Dartmouth
Alice Carmilita MacEachern, age 52 years, of Dartmouth passed away Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, in the QEII Health Sciences Centre (Halifax Infirmary Site).
Born in Ingonish, she was the youngest daughter of the late Alex and Alice (MacLean) Cooke.
She was a member of St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Dartmouth. A graduate of St. Francis Xavier University, Ottawa University and Dalhousie University. She worked as a teacher and a librarian in various schools in the area, as well as the Dartmouth Regional Library, she had a special caring touch particularly with the very young and the elderly.
She is survived by her husband, Alex and a daughter, Meaghen. She is also survived by a sister, Sr. Sandra Cooke, CSM, Sydney Mines; brothers, Bill (Sylvia), Toronto, and Brian (Cecilia), Sydney; stepmother, Frances Cooke, Ingonish; nieces, Catherine and Carolyn, and a nephew, David, as well as several stepbrothers and sisters.
Visiting was 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Friday in Dartmouth Funeral Home, 29 Queen St. Funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. today in St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church (Maple Street, Dartmouth, Rev. John Hayes officiating. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or if you wish a children’s book may be donated to any library in Alice’s memory or a donation to a charity of choice.
Dan Mackie
97, New Waterford
Dan Mackie, 97, of level 2, New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, and a former resident of 747 King St., New Waterford, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Dominion, he was the son of the late Neil and Elizabeth (MacNeil) Mackie.
He was a member of Mount Carmel Parish and a former member of the choir. He retired as a mine official from the Dominion Coal Company, after 40 years of service. He was one of the founding members of the Knights of Columbus, No. 3209, New Waterford.
Surviving are two brothers, Leonard, Glace Bay and Cliff, Boston; daughter-in-law, Audrey, New Waterford; two grandsons, Shaun (Joanna), Baffin Island, Blair, New Waterford; one great- granddaughter, Connor Michelle, Baffin Island.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Catherine Campbell, a son, Raphael, four brothers, Howard, Elmore, Matthew and James, three sisters, Irene, Veronica, Leona.
Visitation will take place Monday, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The Knights of Columbus will assemble at the funeral home on Monday 7:30 p.m. for prayer service.
Funeral mass will be held Tuesday 10 a.m. Mount Carmel Church, Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Burial in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
Annie (Cash) MacPherson
95, Sydney
Mrs. Annie MacPherson of MacGillivray Guest Home, Sydney, passed away peacefully at the home on Friday, Aug. 18, 2000.
Born in Irish Cove, Cape Breton, she was a daughter of the late John and Flora (MacNeil) Cash. She lived there as a young child, then moved with her family to Argyle Street in Sydney in 1917. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Annie resided with her husband, George, on Argyle Street, where they operated an auto body repair business for many years.
Annie was a very religious, generous person who was ever giving and considerate of all who knew her. Her pleasant personality and positive outlook on life throughout the years will remain forever in the memories of all she touched.
One of her deepest loves was Irish Cove and the beauty of the Bras d’Or Lakes. She was a very special person.
Annie was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish and a life member of the CWL of that church since its inception in 1950.
She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews, Vincent Cunningham, Sydney, Barclay Cunningham, Blackett’s Lake, Dan Cash, Irish Cove, Jane Synishin, Antigonish, Bill MacPherson, Sydney River, Florence Stewart, Waverley, Betty Fuller, North Carolina, John A. MacInnis, Watertown, Mass., Pat Stanton and Peggy Sutherland, British Columbia. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Peggy MacPherson, Sydney and Maude Cash, Alberta, also many close, dear friends and relatives.
She was predeceased by husband, George, brothers, Joseph, Daniel, John, Stephen, Michael and sisters, Katie, Mary Anne, Jane, Margaret, Mary and a nephew, Paul Cunningham.
Visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel will take place Sunday, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Monday 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Daniel Church, Sydney, with Rev. Leo Boone officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to MacGillivray Guest Home or the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
