Margaret Jane (McCurdy) Allen
Glace Bay
Margaret Jane Allen, 96, a guest of Breton Bay Nursing Home and a former resident of 45 Nolands Lane, Valley View Complex, Glace Bay, passed away Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at Breton Bay Nursing Home, Sydney.
Born in Ireland, she was the daughter of the late Thomas George and Elizabeth Ann (Berriman) McCurdy.
Mrs. Allen is survived by two sons, Archie (Christina), Glace Bay and Johnnie (Stella), Howie Center; also 22 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband William, three daughters, Roseen Thoms, Margaret Musial and Mary Mollons, sons, Billy, Norman, and George in infancy.
Visitation for Mrs. Allen will be in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be Wednesday 2 p.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eric Lynk officiating. Burial will follow in the Centerville Cemetery, Reserve Mines.
Rev. Dale Catherine Cuff
Pictou
Rev. Dale Catherine Cuff (B.A. M.Div., Dip.Min., M.TH in Pastoral Care, Spec.Inst.Min.) Rector of St. James Anglican Church, Regional Dean of Northumbria Region, Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, 45, passed away peacefully at the Aberdeen Hospital, August 18, 2000.
Rev. Cuff died as she lived her life in the presence of God, in the strength of the Lord Jesus Christ (her best friend) and in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Born in Sydney, Cape Breton Island, she was the daughter of the late Nellie (Crane) and Heber (Herb) John Cuff. Rev. Cuff was educated both in Canada and the United States and was the holder of various Academic and Pastoral Care Degrees, four in total. She also held her Specialist License in Institutional Ministry from the Canadian Association for Pastoral Practice and Education and in accordance with the States having trained in Texas. She was a member of both Associates and a valued member of the National Specialist Commission from the Canadian Association for Pastoral Practice and Education. She was working on her Doctor of Ministry Degree at the time of her death. She was also a member of the Palliative Care Society, having served three times as Chairperson for the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society. She served as President of the Atlantic School of Theology Association, and served on various committees of the Institute of Pastoral Training in Halifax. She was board member of various associations including Palliative Care in Nova Scotia (New Glasgow, Pictou), Rural Palliative Home Care Project Advisory Committee. She also served as President of the Pictou Town Ministerial, she was Past Executive Member of the Pictou County Council of Churches, Past Chairperson of the Pastoral Care Committee Aberdeen Hospital, member of the Ethics Committee Aberdeen Hospital, and a member of the Critical Response Incident Team representing Pictou Elementary School.
She was a member of the Mothers’ Union, Anglican Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island; Rotarian member, Rotary Club of Pictou having been past-president and recent recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the world. She derived great pleasure from this. She was Chaplain for the Royal Canadian Legion Branch, Pictou, for the past 13 years and an honourary member of the Overseas War Veterans Association, Pictou. Parishes she served were Holy Trinity, Bridgewater (1981-83) where she was ordained Deacon and Priest, St. John The Evangelist with Hammonds Plains and Beaverbank (1983-86), and from 1987 was Rector of St. James Anglican Church, Pictou, until her death. Some of her Diocesan duties included her appointment as Regional Dean of Northumberland Region since 1994, Supervisor to the newly ordained and Assessor of candidates for ordination. She was also Chaplain for the Northumberland Veterans’ Unit, Sutherland-Harris Hospital, Pictou, in association with the Dept. of Veterans’ Affairs.
Dale will be greatly missed by her family and friends she loved and all those who cared for her. We, her family, rejoice in her celebration of life as she makes her journey home.
Surviving are one brother, Harold (Marilyn) Cuff, Niagara Falls, Ont.; niece, Melanee Cuff, St. Catharines, Ont.; two sisters, Sharon (Greg) Sawlor, California; nephew, Scott Sawlor, Sydney, Shirley (David) MacKay, Bras d’Or; niece and goddaughter, Janette (Rob) Olleros, Brantford, Ont.; great nephews, Matthew, Lucas and godson Jacob; niece and goddaughter, Lisa MacKay, Niagara Falls, Ont.; great nieces and goddaughters, Mikayla and Haley; godson Jax Bernard, Hopewell, Nova Scotia; various aunts, uncles, cousins, close family friend, Ella Langille, beloved pets, Sabrina and Malta.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at the McLaren Funeral Home today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. A Memorial Service in the form of High Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, Aug. 22, at 2 p.m. at St. James Anglican Church, Pictou, officiated by Archbishop Arthur Peters and Bishop Fred Hiltz, assisted by the Rev. Melvin Langille. Reception to follow in the church hall.
Committal to take place Wednesday, Aug. 23, at the Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Cape Breton Island, officiated by the Rev. Margaret Collins and the Rev. Canon Fev Arnold.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. James Anglican Church and/or Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
John Lockman
46, Bridgeport
Mr. John Lockman, 46, a resident Seaview Manor and a former resident of 24 Station St., Bridgeport, passed away Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at Seaview Manor Guest Home, Glace Bay.
Born in Glace Bay, John was the son of Gerald Lockman, Dominion and the late former Gertrude Doyle.
John was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport. He was an avid dart player and enjoyed hunting and fishing as a recreational pastime. He was employed with the Cape Breton Development Corp. working in Prince Mine.
Besides his father, Gerald, John is survived by his wife the former Linda Davidson; three daughters, April (Mrs. David Green), Morien, Barbara, Glace Bay, and Brenda, Halifax; one son, John, at home; five brothers, Gerry (Karen), Ontario, Francis (Mary), Reserve Mines, Harry, Ontario, Barry (Stacey), Glace Bay, and Tommy (Donelda), Dominion; six sisters, Alvina (Barry) Tessiler, Ontario, Ann Marie (Dave) Wall, Glace Bay, Lorraine (Brian) McNamara, Reserve Mines, Rose (Glen) Knox, Glace Bay, Alice (Troy) Kristoff, Glace Bay and Sharon Neary, Glace Bay. Also by a favourite Aunt Annie Bennett, Dominion.
Visitation will be today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated 2 p.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Church with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Mary Anne MacKay
Inverness
Mary Anne MacKay, 100, of Inverness, passed away Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital, Inverness.
Born at Margaree, she was the daughter of the late John C. and Annie (MacEachern) MacIsaac. She was a member of Stella Maris Church, Inverness.
Surviving are three daughters, Georgina Murray, Montreal, Kathleen MacKay, Inverness, and Marion Zannie, Dartmouth; three sons, Angus and Harold, both of Inverness and Gerald, Montreal; a brother William MacIsaac, Inverness. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her husband John Edward, a son John, two sons and daughters in infancy, sisters, Katie, Sarah and Lucy, brothers, Hugh Dougald, Jim Angus, Alex, John Archie and Roddie.
The late Mrs. MacKay will rest at Inverness Funeral Home with visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today (Monday). Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Stella Maris Church, Inverness, with Rev. J.J. MacDonald officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital or the Stella Maris Cemetery Fund.

Mary J. Penney
Sydney
Mary J. Penney of 52 St. Thomas Ave., Mira Road, formerly of Railroad St., Whitney Pier, passed away suddenly Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, in Ontario while visiting family.
Born at Belle Island, Newfoundland, she was the daughter of the late William and Jane (Kent) Neary.
She was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish for many years and for the past 22 years a member of Immaculate Heart Parish and the parish CWL. Mary possessed a great love for Celtic music and step-dancing and was an active member of the Cape Breton step-dancing classes.
Surviving are daughters Rita (Mike) MacIsaac, Sydney River, Madonna (Wayne) Rintoul, Kitchener, Ont., and Mary, Edmonton, Alta.; two sons, Tom (Brenda), Kitchener, Ont. and Leonard Jr., Fort McMurray, Alta.; a sister, Margaret Gorman, Westmount; two brothers, Bill Neary, Belle Island, Nfld. and Leo Neary, Toronto; grandchildren, Maureen MacIsaac, Renée MacIsaac, both of Sydney River, Nicole Penney, Edmonton, Jimmy Saunders, Tom Jr., Jim Penney, and Julie (Gord) MacLaughlin, all of Kitchener, Ont. and one great-granddaughter Jessica MacLaughlin, Kitchener, Ont. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by her husband of 56 years Leonard and a sister Gertrude Doyle.
The late Mrs. Penney will have visitation Wednesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral Mass will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday in Immaculate Heart Church, Mira Road, with Father Gary MacPherson officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Redensio Polegato, 68, of Trout Brook Road, passed away Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Dominion, he was the son of the late Agostino and Angelina (Caverzan) Polegato.
He was a member of St. Joseph Mission Church, Albert Bridge. Redensio retired from the A.V.T.C. in 1996.
Surviving are his wife the former Theresa MacCormick; daughter Mary (Michael) MacInnis, Prime Brook; a son Jackie (Nancy), Trout Brook Road; two brothers, Elvio (Betty), Sydney River, and Angelo (Helen), Niagara Falls, Ont.; four grandchildren, Bradley, Shaun, Angela, and Melissa.
Predeceased by sister Mary Morelatto, a sister in infancy and a brother John.
The late Mr. Polegato will have visitation today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. on the second level of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph Mission Church with Father Gary MacPherson officiating. Interment in St. Joseph Mission Church Cemetery.
