Ida Mary Sachs
81, Glace Bay
Mrs. Ida Mary Sachs, 81, of 71 Catherine St., Glace Bay, passed away Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, in the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Rory and Christine (Gillis) McNeil. Ida was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, New Aberdeen.
She is survived by one daughter, Marie (Mrs. Lawrence MacDonald), Calgary, Alta.; one brother, Duncan, New Waterford, and one grandson, Lawrence.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband Josef Sachs, three sisters, Elizabeth, Catherine and Sadie, five brothers, Randolph, Rannie, Archie, James, and Roderick.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be celebrated Thursday 11 a.m. in St. John’s Church with Fr. Paul McGillivray officiating. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
Any memorials in Ida’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
John R. Squires
85, Big Bras d'Or
Mr. John R. Squires, 85, of Big Bras d’Or, passed away peacefully Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at the Halifax Infirmary.
Born at Big Bras d’Or, he was the son of the late Jack and Florence (Stephenson) Squires.
He was a member of St. James Presbyterian Church, Big Bras d’Or and was a retired coal miner, having worked at Princess Colliery. He was a veteran of the Second World War and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. 008, Sydney Mines. He was also a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, North Sydney.
Mr. Squires leaves behind to mourn two children, a son Robert (Barbara), Ignace, Ont., and a daughter Linda Parson (Allan), Kelligrew, Nfld.; three grandchildren, Robert, Nancy Doyle (Dion) and Annette; two great-grandchildren, twins, Kyle and Evan; two brothers, Edward and James (Peggy), both of Bras d’Or; sister Emily (Mrs. Harry Fisk), Montreal, and his special and dear friend Dorothy Wallace of Bras d’Or.
He was predeceased by his wife Hilda in 1971 and his brother William.
Visitation will be held today (Monday) from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. in St. James Presbyterian Church, Big Bras d’Or with Rev. Murdock MacRae officiating. Burial to follow in St. James Cemetery.
As memorials, donations may be made to the IOOF Hall Vista Lodge #62, North Sydney, the Royal Canadian Legion Comfort Fund, Sydney Mines Branch, St. James Presbyterian Church, St. John’s United Church, Bras d’Or, or the charity of choice.
Alice (Cissy) Beaton
46, River Bourgeois
Alice (Cissy) Beaton, 46, of River Bourgeois, passed away at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish, on Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000.
Born in Montreal, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Samson and Lena MacLean.
She was a former employee of N.S. Power, Halifax. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, River Bourgeois.
She is survived by her daughter, Laura (Adam) White, Halifax, and a son, Christopher, at home; brother, Jimmie (Edna) Samson, River Bourgeois; sisters, Bonnie (Bill) Hines, Princeville, Pauline (Arthur) Matthews, River Bourgeois, Jean (Brian) Stevenson, P.E.I., Marjorie (George) Detheridge, Sydney, Sheri (Roy) Brown, New Waterford and Dorothy MacLean, Toronto.
She was predeceased by stepmother, Laura Samson and brothers, Peter Samson, and Gerald MacLean.
Visitation will be held today (Tuesday) from 2-9 p.m. at River Bourgeois Community Funeral Home. Funeral mass will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Church, River Bourgeois, Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Sandy MacNeil officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Palliative Care, St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, or to the charity of one’s choice.

John James (J.J.) MacLellan Jr.
Northside East Bay
J.J. MacLellan, 27, of 252 St. Peter’s Rd., Sydney, formerly of Northside East Bay, passed away Sunday, Aug., 20, 2000, as the result of a motorcycle accident.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of John James and Barbara (MacPhee) MacLellan of Northside East Bay. He was a member of St. Mary’s Parish, East Bay.
J.J. worked as a correctional officer at the Cape Breton Correctional Centre as well as an employee at Daniel’s in Sydney. He was a former graduate of Riverview High School Class of 1990. He was also a former graduate of the Scotia Career Academy Class of 1997. He enjoyed such sports as baseball, kickboxing and scuba diving.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his paternal grandmother, Margaret MacLellan, Northside East Bay; two brothers, David and Alexander, both of Northside East Bay; one half-brother, Michael, Sydney; one nephew, Blake Anthony Boudreau, Arichat and loving companion, Linda Rafuse.
He was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Alec A. MacLellan and maternal grandparents, Liza and Jim MacPhee.
The late Mr. MacLellan will have visitation Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 9 a.m. Friday in St. Mary’s Church, East Bay with Rev. Frank Abbass officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Dennis Maloney
72, Bras d'Or
Dennis Frank Maloney, age 72, a resident of Rendell Drive, Bras d’Or, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Frank and Mary (Doyle) Maloney.
Frank worked as an engineer with CN Marine until his retirement. He was a veteran of the Korean War, Special Force and also served with the Merchant Seamen. He was a member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 19, North Sydney.
Surviving are his wife, Gloria (Edmunds); one daughter, Ruth Maloney, North Sydney; granddaughter, Lisa Maloney; three brothers, Ralph Maloney, Truro, Gerald Maloney, Ontario and Jack Maloney, New Brunswick; three stepsisters, Georgina MacDonald, Halifax, Arthena Tobin, North Sydney and Carol MacLean, North Redding, Boston; two stepbrothers, Vern Edmunds, North Sydney and Lorne (Bud) Edmunds, Millville.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to W. J. Dooley Funeral Service Ltd., 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
Francis (Frank) Richard
65, Howie Centre
Mr. Francis (Frank) Richard, 65, of 21 Hallmark Crescent, Howie Center, formerly of Grand Lake Road, peacefully passed away Monday, Aug. 21, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in St. Peter’s, he was the son of Clifford Richard and the late Jenny Richard.
He is survived by his loving wife, Yvonne (Langlois); two sons, Brian (Susan), Howie Centre and Kevin, Sydney; daughters, Nancy (Philip) MacLean, Sydney River, Beverly Mader, Sydney, Susan (Taso) Sifnakis, Howie Centre, Marion (John) Newcombe, Halifax, N.S., Judy (Kevin) Williamson, Brampton, Ont. and Lori (Neil) Paterson, Sydney River. Also survived by 13 grandchildren; a sister, Frances (Tis) MacNeil, Sydney and stepmother, Tina Richard, Sydney.
He was predeceased by his brother, Johnny Richard.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral mass will be held Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at 11 a.m. in Sydney Memorial Chapel with Fr. Neil McKenna officiating. Internment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Frank will be greatly missed by his family and friends whom he loved and all those who cared for him. Known as a father to all, “Grampy” as he was affectionately known by his grandchildren, will be sadly missed.
We, his family, rejoice in his celebration of life as he makes his journey home.
