Joseph Hartigan Chiasson
86, Florida
Joseph H. Chiasson, 86, of Port Richey, Fla., formerly of Glace Bay, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000.
A son of the late Peter and Mary (McLeod) Chiasson, he attended local schools and served in the Canadian Service during the Second World War. He resided in Katonah, N.Y. since 1954, moving to Florida upon retirement.
He is survived by his wife, the former Joan Currie; sons, Johnny and Allan; daughters, Louise, Mary and Majorie; brothers, Art, Glace Bay, Garv, Welland; sister, Betty, Hamilton and foster sister, Annie Hogan, Hamilton.
He was predeceased by a son, Allan, brothers, Johnny, Felix, Micky, Pierre and sister, Lillian.
Services and funeral to take place in Florida.
Angus Archie MacAulay
86, Glace Bay
Angus Archie MacAulay, 86, of Victoria Haven Nursing Home, Glace Bay, and formerly of 5 Rebecca St., Glace Bay, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in New Boston, Catalone, Cape Breton County, he was the son of the late Angus and Margaret (Munroe) MacAulay.
Angus was an elder of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay. He worked with the Dominion Coal Company and Devco until his retirement. He was a member of Aberdeen Lodge No. 68, IOOF.
Angus is survived by a daughter, Grace, Glace Bay; son, Richard, Glace Bay; sister-in-law, Gladys MacAulay, Glace Bay; nieces, Mary and Joan; grandnieces, Kerri and Neila; nephews, Richard and Archie Morash.
Predeceased by his wife, Mary Lois MacAulay in 1991, sister, Lexie (MacAulay) Morash and brother, Neil.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay, Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Eric Lynk officiating. Interment will be in Loch End Cemetery, Catalone.
Elizabeth Irma (Mercer) MacIsaac
81, New Waterford
Elizabeth Irma (Mercer) MacIsaac, 81, of 3736 St. Agnes Ave., New Waterford, formerly of Victoria Road, Sydney, passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Monday, Aug. 21, 2000 and has gone to be with the Lord and her beloved husband, Angie.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Ella (Downy) Mercer.
Elizabeth came to New Waterford from Sydney as a young bride and along with Angie raised 10 children. She belonged to Calvin United Church and in her early years was an active member of the UCW. She volunteered her time with the TMH class at St. Agnes School. She was an animal lover and a member of the SPCA. Liz had a wonderful sense of humour and loved to laugh.
She is survived by four sons, Barry (Georgina), Petrolia, Ont., Bobby (Heather), Victoria, B.C., Ronnie, Victoria, B.C., John (Paula), New Victoria; six daughters, Beverly (John) Field, Elsa Craig, Ontario, Sharon (Bree) Cadden, New Waterford, Ella Lamarche, New Waterford, Marlene, Strathroy, Ont., Sandra (Jim) Ferguson, New Waterford, Lynda, London, Ont.; 18 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and a sister, Thelma (John) Rogers, Sydney.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Angus (Chink MacLean) MacIsaac, infant daughter, Cynthia Lee, infant great-grandson, Noah, three sisters, Edna (Ted) King, Phyllis Jones, Myrtle Melnick and only brother, Ernest Mercer, all from Sydney.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. Church service will be held Thursday, 2 p.m. in Calvin United Church with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Burial in Union Grove Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Diabetic Association and the SPCA.

Helen Spencer
62, Glace Bay
Helen Spencer, 62, of 86 Nolan St., Glace Bay, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, in Toronto, Ont.
Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of Anastasia (Crawley) and the late John C. Beaver.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish. She enjoyed playing and listening to country and western music and she especially cherished the time spent with her children and grandchildren.
Besides her mother, she is survived by Wilfred Spencer, father of her children; daughters, Jean (Terry Randall) Spencer and Leona (John) Seward, all of B.C.; son, Garry (partner Rob Anderson), Toronto; sisters, Marie (Freeman) Lynk, Glace Bay, Leona Poirier, Reserve Mines and Mildred (Eric) Young, Toronto; several grandchildren and one great-grandchild, Austin. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Besides her father, she was predeceased by longtime companion, Michael (Feathers) Graham, brother, John C. Beaver, sister, Loretta Edwards, also a sister, Shirley Violet and brother, Walter James in infancy.
Visitation will be in Curry Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, today (Wednesday), 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Friday, 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church with Rev. Jim Oliver officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
Donations in Helen’s memory are suggested to the Canadian Cancer Society.

89, Lower L'Ardoise
Dan Berrette, 89, of Lower L’Ardoise, Richmond County, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.
He was a son of the late James (Jimmy) and the late Judith (Taylor) Berrette.
He leaves his wife, Sarah (Briand), Lower L’Ardoise and his children, Hélène (Jean-Paul) Losier, Tracadie, N.B., Viola (John) MacIntosh, Lower L’Ardoise, Cecil (Peggy), Sydney, Don (Lucille), Tatamagouche, Judith (Gerald) Melanson, Calgary, Alta., James (Christine), Rockdale, and his beloved grandson, with whom he lived, Donnie. He also leaves 16 other grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brother, Willie (Mary) and sisters, Annebelle (Dan) Sampson, Lower L’Ardoise, and Florence (Cecil) Parry, St. Peter’s.
He was predeceased by brother, Edward, and sisters, Lena, Alice, and Helen and one son, John.
Visitation was held Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at the L’Ardoise Funeral Home. Funeral mass was held Monday, Aug. 21, at Holy Guardian Angels Church, L’Ardoise, Rev. John MacIntyre officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of Alex A. Morrison Funeral Home, St. Peter’s.
George Walter Burns
89, New Glasgow
George Walter Burns, 89, of New Glasgow, N.S., formerly of Sydney, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000.
Born in Boston, Mass., he was the eldest son of the late Frank and Margaret (Fraser) Burns.
He was a member of St. George’s Anglican Church, Sydney. He retired from Sydney Steel Corp. in 1975 after 40 years of service. An avid gardener, he delighted in showing the results of his patience and love to friends, neighbours and strangers alike, and oft times they left with a bouquet of flowers.
Walter is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Hazel Lewis, devoted daughters, Franklyn Holman and Murida (Meda) Bailey, all of New Glasgow.
Da (Poppie) will be missed by grandchildren, John (Kathy) Holman, Debbie (John) vanVulpen, James (Janet) Bailey, Dana Bailey, Kirk (Nichole) Bailey and great-grandchildren, Malorie and Scott Holman, Kaylee vanVulpen, Jacob, Jared, Gabrielle, Mary Bailey, all of New Glasgow and brother, Jim (Albie), Westmount, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with funeral service in St. George’s Anglican Church, Saturday 1 p.m. with Rev. Lori Ramsey officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
