Bertha Louella Cooke
94, North West Arm, Point Edward
Bertha L. Cooke, 94, of North West Arm/Point Edward, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late James and Anastasia (MacIsaac) MacNeil.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Sydney.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by three daughters, Teresa (Jake) Tomko, Point Edward, Dorothy Murray, Sydney and Louise Kelland, Goose Bay; one son, Gerald, Toronto; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Bertha was predeceased by her husband, James Robert Cooke, one son, Roy William MacNeil, several brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel today (Thursday), 7-9 p.m. and Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held in Sacred Heart Church, Saturday at 9 a.m. with Rev. Anthony O’Connor officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery.
Dearest mother, rest in peace.

Mary Phalen
81, Brigton, Mass.
Mary Phalen, 81, of Brighton, Mass. died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at the Presentation Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Brighton, Mass.
Born in Upper River Denys, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Angus R. and Effie (MacPherson) MacPhail.
She served in the Canadian Army overseas during the Second World War and worked in Massachusetts until her retirement.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Phalen, formerly of Glace Bay, N.S.; brothers, George, Jack Phillip, Donald G., sisters Margaret, (Dan) Strachan, Ada (Allan) MacPhail.
She is survived by neices and nephews in Canada and the U.S.A.
Visitation Friday night at Sullivan’s Funeral Home, 10 Hanshaw St., Brighton. Funeral Saturday, Aug. 26 in Brighton.

Theodore (Ted) Poole
73, Sydney
Theodore (Ted) Poole, 73, of Ranna Drive, Sydney, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in New Glasgow, Ted was a son of the late John and Etta (Trenholm) Poole.
He retired from the CNR in 1986 after 43 years service. He was a member of St. Andrew’s United Church. Ted was a great bowler.
He is survived by his wife, the former Bertha Crittenden; one daughter, Janet (Rick) Young, Brampton, Ont.; one son, Allan (Linda), Sydney; four grandchildren, Robert, Bradley, Jonathan and Heather Ann; one sister, Mary (Richard) Sloan, New Glasgow.
He was predeceased by one sister, Jessie.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.. Funeral service will be in the chapel on Saturday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Ralph Johnston officiating. Interment in New Glasgow.
Family flowers only. Memorials may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Cape Breton Palliative Care.

Leo Joseph Desveaux
Lawrencetown/New Waterford
Leo Joseph Desveaux, 41, of 339 West Lawrencetown Road, Lawrencetown, N.S. and a former resident of New Waterford, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of Georgette (Carpenter) Desveaux, New Waterford and the late Albert Desveaux.
Leo was a member of St. Vincent de Paul parish in Cole Harbour. He worked as a stationary engineer, employed with Black and MacDonald.
Surviving are his wife, the former Laura Cecilia (Murray) Desveaux, Lawrencetown and a son, Mark William, at home; five brothers, Roland (Dorothy) and Phil (Dawn), both of London, Ont., Arthur (Josie), Toronto, Ont., George (Ann Marie), Coxheath and Frank (Nancy), Mississauga; three sisters, Marie (John) MacLellan, Rosie (John) Hutchinson, both of New Waterford and Bertha (Kevin) Williamson, Northside East Bay.
Visitation is in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, Saturday 7-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral on Monday, 10 a.m. in Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford. Cremation to follow. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Donations in Leo’s memory to the Cape Breton Chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.

Mary Ellen LeBlanc
76, Florence
Mary Ellen (Barrie) LeBlanc, 76, a resident of Florence, died peacefully at the home of her niece, Frances Mitchelitis, Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000.
Born in Florence, she was the daughter of the late John W. Barrie and Mary Ellen (MacLean) Barrie.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s parish in Bras d’Or. Mary Ellen was employed at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, North Sydney from 1960 to 1963. She always loved to travel.
Surviving Mary Ellen are two daughters, Mary White, North Sydney and Evelyn MacIntosh, Florence; three sons, John William, Lunenburg, N.S., Joseph (Caroline), Sydney Mines and John Lester Barrie, Mississauga, Ont.; three sisters, Theresa of Florence, Cecelia Simpson, Sydney Mines; brothers, John James of Florence, Alphonse, Sydney Mines, Frank, Mill Creek and stepbrother, Percy of Florence. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by husband, John B. LeBlanc in 1981 and a son, Jude Anthony in infancy; sister, Margeurite Hoeg; brothers, William Edward and Anthony Bernard; stepsister, Helen and grandson, Troy LeBlanc.
Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27 at G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral mass will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or, with burial to follow in the parish cemetery.

Jerry Frank Prusik
81, Sydney Mines
Jerry Frank Prusik, 81, passed away peacefully at 27 Rankin St., Bras d’Or, on Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000.
Born in Alberta, he was the son of the late Frederick and Mary (Dombeck) Prusik.
He served in the Canadian Services during the Second World War. He worked at the Nickerson’s Fish Plant for 35 years before retiring. Jerry was an avid CB radio operator where he made many friends. He was also a regular bingo fan.
Jerry lived most of his life in Sydney Mines. In the last five years he was looked after by his niece and careworker, Donna Reashore. Special thanks to Darryl MacKinnon, also his careworker, as well as his homecare workers, Bernadette White and Michelle Forrest.
He is survived by his sister, Helen Reashore, Point Aconi Road, Bras d’Or, and large number of nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by two sisters, Mary Nicholson and Anne Sampson, a brother, Fred and a sister-in-law, Bertha.
Visitation will take place at the G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home Friday, Aug. 25, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Funeral Home with Fr. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society or a charity of one’s choice.
