William Leo Roland

William Leo Roland, 59, of Alder Point Road passed away Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Alder Point, he was the son of the late Louis and Mary (Williams) Roland.
He was a member of St. Anne’s parish, Alder Point and a member of Local 752 Ironworkers.
William is survived and cherished by his wife, Betty (White); daughters, Shannon (Mark), Alder Point and Natasha (Mark), Calgary and his beloved grandson, Cody William; sisters, Marie (Amor), Montreal, Lorraine, North Sydney, Margie (Kevin), St. Catharines, Ont., Theresa (Charles), Halifax, Karen (Paul), Cole Harbour; brothers, John (Carmen), Big Bras d’Or, Greg (Brenda), Alder Point, Clifford (Joan), Saskatchewan.
He was predeceased by sisters, Regina, Annette and brothers, Louis and Bernie.
Visitation will take place at the G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines, Saturday, Aug. 26 from 7-9 p.m. Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Monday 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or with Fr. Joe Gillis officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Family flowers only, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Andrew Anthony Tratnik
43, Halifax
Andrew Anthony Tratnik, 43, Halifax, passed away Wednesday, August 23, 2000, in the QEII Health Sciences Centre. He was a son of Laura (Ravanello) Tratnik and the late Anthony Tratnik, Sydney, Cape Breton. Andrew is survived by his wife, Linda Reid, formerly of Amherst; daughter, Caitlin “Caitie”; step-daughter, Megan Moreau; grandmother, Ida Ravanello, Dominion; aunts, Luigia Demeyere, Dominion, Livia Gallina and Lena Gazzola, Ontario. He was predeceased by a sister, Paula and a brother, Carl in infancy. He was educated in Sydney and attended Acadia University. He was employed as a draftsman for most of his adult life. In 1996 Andrew graduated from the Information Technology Institute (ITI) and was excited about a new future in computers, but he was diagnosed with a disease of the bone marrow that changed the focus of his life. Andrew volunteered his time with the Unrelated Bone Marrow Registry and volunteered as treasurer for the Bone Marrow for Life Endowment. Andrew loved music and spending time with friends and neighbours. He truly enjoyed wood-working and reading and anything to do with computers. When he was able, he enjoyed camping, fishing, hiking, bicycling and hockey. Andrew had a quick sense of humour, ready laugh and a sharp inquisitive mind and he will be terribly missed by all who loved him. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held in J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, 149 Herring Cove Rd., Halifax on Saturday, August 26, from 7-9 p.m. Visitation in Sydney will be held in T.W. Curry Funeral Home, 755 George St., Sydney on Tuesday, August 29, between 2-4 p.m. A memorial service will be held in T.W. Curry Chapel at 7 p.m. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery. James Alexander (Dimples) Ferguson
51, New Waterford
Jim Ferguson, 51, of 3736 St. Agnes Ave., New Waterford, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at the Halifax Infirmary, and is gone home to be with our Lord and Saviour, Jesus.
Born in New Waterford, he was the loving son of Ruth (Turnbull) Ferguson and the late Bert Ferguson.
Jim was a member of the Cape Breton Christian Fellowship Church, Sydney and in the past has served as an elder at the Calvin United Church, New Waterford.
A wonderful husband and friend to Sandra (MacIsaac) Ferguson and an amazing dad to the “lights of his life” Tara, Brittany and Victoria, all at home and his son, Shane Gilbert, Halifax. Also survived by sisters, Jeanette (Ray) Sampson, New Waterford, Gwen (Barry) Morrison, Glace Bay; brothers, Harry (Jackie), Glenn (Gail), Stephen (Wendy), Eddy (Sandi), all of Calgary, Alta., Ray (Trish), Kelowna, B.C., Billy (Jackie), Kingston, Ont., Brian (Donna), Gardiner Mines and Donald ‘Smokey’ (Charlene), New Waterford. Jim is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Jim loved people, he brought much joy to everyone’s life, he was blessed with a merry heart and it truly was medicine to our souls. Gone but not forgotten . . .
Visitation will be Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the McLellan Bros. Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday from the Calvin United Church with Pastor Kevin Mattatall and Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Burial in the Union Grove Cemetery.
Eleanor Theresa (Wiggy) Harte
72, Guysborough Co.
Eleanor Theresa (Wiggy) Harte, 72, of Goldboro, Guysborough County, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish.
Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late Jerimiah and Annie (Curry) Toomey.
She was a member of St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, Glace Bay. After living most of her life in Glace Bay, she moved to Goldboro 21 years ago. Eleanor was best known for her love of bingo and card playing. A loving mother and grandmother she will be sorely missed by all.
She is survived by daughters, Donna MacLeod (Raymond), Isaac’s Harbour, Elaine Hudson (Randy), Drumhead; sons, Gerald (Donna), Glace Bay, Blair (Marsha) and Brian (Joanne), both of Isaac’s Harbour; brothers, Tim (Pat) and Jerry (Jean), both of Glace Bay; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Stewart, brothers, Donald and Joseph (Tom), sister Sarah (Kay) Langley and half-sister Mary Fricker.
Cremation has taken place. No visitation by request. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday in the G.W. Giffin Funeral Home, County Harbour, Rev. Chuck Mosley officiating. Burial in Seaside Cemetery, Seal Harbour.

John James Hennessey
74, Sydney
John J. Hennessey, 74, of Campbell Street, Sydney, passed away Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, following a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Edmunston, N.B., John was the youngest and last surviving member of the family of the late George (Bert) Hennessey and Dolena (MacLeod) Hennessey.
He was educated in the Sydney schools and employed with the CNR for 44 years retiring in 1986. He was an adherent of St. Andrew’s Church, Sydney.
A veteran of the Second World War. John was a dedicated member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12, where he held several offices and headed numerous committees. He was a valued member of the board of directors for Resi-Care. For many years he was active in the Retarded Children’s Association where he held the office of treasurer and drove the RCA bus. John was a familiar visitor to the Red Cross Blood Donor Clinic where he contributed more than 100 donations. Other affiliations included membership in the MacKay Masonic Lodge, CNR Pensioners Association and the Sydney Golden K Club.
John is survived by two daughters, Joan Corbett, Howie Centre and Patsy Hennessey; and his former wife, Harriett Hennessey, Ben Eoin; two nieces; three nephews; also a special friend and companion for several years Chris Reid.
He was predeceased by his only sister, Jean (George) Myers, Glace Bay and brothers, Bill of Westmount, Murdock and George, Sydney.
Visitation will be in the Sydney Memorial Chapel, Saturday 7-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service for the late Mr. Hennessey will take place in St. Andrew’s Church, Bentinck Street, Sydney, Monday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Ralph Johnston officiating. Interment to follow in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Lavina Jacobs
86, Sydney
Lavinia Jacobs, 86, of Spruce Haven Dr., Sydney, passed away Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Bonavista, Nfld., she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Jane (Stanley) Newell.
She was a member of the Salvation Army Citadel.
She is survived by three daughters, Marie (Raymond) Muise, Hilda (Melvin) Hillier and Winnie Larade, all of Sydney; six sons, George (Iris), Joe (Amelia), Ted (Sharon), Edgar (Mary), Matt (Theresa) and Harry (Carol), all of Sydney. She will be sadly missed by her 30 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister, Princealina Sheppard, Bridgewater; two brothers, Edgar Newell and Eric Newell, of Sydney; a daughter-in-law, Germaine Jacobs and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Matthias, three daughters, Lorraine, Myrtle, Jacqueline, three sons, Frank, Gordon, James, two granddaughters, Susan, Linda, a sister, Olive Terrio, three brothers, Joe, Max and Wes.
No visitation by request. A memorial service will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, 2 p.m. Monday with Capt. Morris Vincent officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
