Geraldine Muriel Jones
82, Sydney
Geraldine Muriel Jones, 82, of Kitchener Street, Sydney, passed away Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Sidney and Amelia (Whalen) Jones.
She was a member of St. Alban’s Anglican parish. She retired from the Sydney City Hospital housekeeping department, after 35 years service. She was a member of Club 55 and an avid traveller with Harvey Tours.
Geraldine was survived by two sisters, Melda Delorenzo, Northside East Bay and Erma Maxwell, Sydney; one brother, George (Edith), Sydney and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two sisters, May Campbell and Doriel Jones, brothers-in-law, George Maxwell and Joseph Delorenzo.
There will be no visitation at her request. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Cape Breton Palliative Care.

Gertrude Louise MacCarthy
98, Sydney
Gertrude Louise MacCarthy, 98, of MacGillivray Guest Home, Sydney, formerly of 466 Townsend St. and Maple Ridge Seniors Complex, passed away Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at the home.
Born in Sydney, she was the only daughter of the late Daniel L. and Agnes (MacGillivary) Gillis.
She was a member of St. Theresa’s Parish CWL for over 25 years and a member of St. Rita’s Hospital Auxiliary. Mrs. MacCarthy was also a member of the Independent Order of Forresters for 50 years. She was employed with the Maritime Movie Company, the first movie company in Sydney.
She is survived by her daughter, June (Doug) MacKeigan, Glace Bay; two sons, Henry (Greta) MacNeil and Kevin (Sandra) MacNeil, both of Sydney. Also surviving are her daughter-in-law, Helen, Sydney Forks; 23 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her first husband, George R. MacNeil and her second husband, Jack MacCarthy, also by her daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Glen Tutty, one son, Gerald MacNeil.
The late Mrs. MacCarthy will have visitation Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Theresa’s Church, Sydney with Fr. Angus MacDougall officiating. Interment in St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery, East Bay.

Newton L. MacKay
Sydney Forks
Newton L. MacKay, 92, of Sydney Forks, passed away Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Frederick ‘Eric’ and Gertrude (Boutilier) MacKay.
He was a well known businessman in Sydney and surrounding area. He operated the N.L. MacKay fuel vehicles fleet and was an agent for the British American Oil Company. Following his retirement from British American Oil Company, he was manager of the Lingan Golf Club.
Surviving are his only daughter, Maura, at home; three sisters, Corinne MacKinnon, North Battleford, Sask., Marguerite Parkins and ‘Piney’ MacKay, both of Victoria, B.C.; brother, Barton (Mary) MacKay, Sydney; also survived by two nieces and three nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Helen F. McDougall in 1976.
The late Mr. MacKay will have no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney with Rev. Willis Henderson officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donald Albert Abbott
56, Sydney
Donald Albert Abbott, 56, of Rockcliffe Crescent, Sydney, passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born April 18th, 1944, in Sydney, he was a son of Jessie MacKeigan, Sydney, and the late John MacKeigan.
Donnie attended Sydney Academy and was employed at Metro Sanitation for 20 years. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 138, an avid dart player and enjoyed many years of camping with his family and friends. He leaves an optimism, his resilience and his sense of humor which was always catching us off guard.
Donnie is remembered and sadly missed by his son Donald (Melissa), Sydney, Evelyn (Mike), Vancouver, and wife Linda; also a grand son Kyle and Gampy’s little sweeties Alyshia Wadden and Ashley Taylor. Donnie is also survived by step-sons Derrick and Kris and by extended family Dale (Jackie); Lisa (Steven); and Terry (Amanda). Also surviving are his brothers Dave (Ann), Rob Roy, all of Sydney; a sister Elizabeth (Eric), Vancouver, and only nephew Scott. Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Tuesday, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. A celebration of Donnie’s life will be held on Wednesday 10 a.m. in the chapel with Capt. Morris and Wanda Vincent officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Palliative Care.
Donnie brought much love and joy to all who knew him. It’s time to rest now Gampy.
Lenore E. Cullen
Alexandria, New Hampshire
Lenore Cullen, 92, of Perkins Hill Road, Alexandria, New Hampshire, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, at Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth, N.H.
She was born in Edwardsville, Nova Scotia, the oldest of fourteen children of Sydney R. and Ruphina (MacDonald) Lewis. She completed Normal School and worked as a teacher in Nova Scotia before moving to Framingham, Mass., in 1929. She lived and worked in Framingham most of her life. For many years she worked at the Fannie Farmer Candy Store in Framingham. She was the wife of the late Robert J. Cullen.
While in Framingham, she was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Church. Since her move to New Hampshire she has been a member of St. Timothy’s Church in Bristol.
Family members include three daughters, Mrs. James F. (Joan M.) Martin, West Dennis, Mass., Mrs. Victor J. (Elaine C.) MacAdam, Bridgewater, N.H., and Mrs. Edward S. (Barbara C.) Skroback, Alexandria, N.H.; three grandchildren, Nicole Letourneau, Brian Skroback, and Kimberly Skroback; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Basil Lewis of Sydney, Nova Scotia, and Mrs. Walter (Margaret) Lee of Scarborough, Ont.
She was predeceased by 11 brothers and sisters, Walter Lewis, Wellington Lewis, Kathleen Lewis, Allen Lewis, Earl Lewis, Clyde Lewis, Vincent Lewis, Roy Lewis, Ruphina Lewis, Dorothy Grace, and Bert Lewis.
Services-calling hours will be Tuesday, Aug. 29, from 4-8 p.m. at the Emmons Funeral Home, 115 South Main St., Bristol, N.H. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Aug. 30, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace, at the corner of Rte. 3A and West Shore Road, Bristol, N.H. Father William Quirk will be the celebrant. Committal Services will be Thursday, Aug. 31, at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Framingham, Mass. Father Albert Stankard will officiate.

Effie Drew
62, Sydney
Effie Drew, 62, of Bentinck St., Sydney, passed away Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Fox Island, Nfld., she was a daughter of the late Edward and Harriet (Eavis) Bowles.
She is survived by one daughter Daisy Wagner, Louisbourg; five sons, Edward Bowles, and Harry Drew, of Louisbourg, Eric and Terrance Drew of Sydney and Craig Drew of Ontario; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Mazie Crant, Louisbourg; two brothers, Cecil and Harry Bowles of Nfld.
She was predeceased by five sisters, Edna, Lucy, Marie, Alma and Annie, two brothers, Jack and Hartley.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with funeral service in St. Georges Anglican Church Tuesday 11 a.m. with Rev. Lori Ramsey officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
