Lawrence Long
85, Sydney Mines
Lawrence Long, 85, a resident of Charlotte St., Sydney Mines, and formerly of 11 East St., North Sydney, passed away peacefully Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, at Harbourview Hospital, Sydney Mines.
Born August 2nd, 1915, in Great Jervois, Nfld., he was the youngest son of the late Benjamin and Margaret (Strickland) Long. He served as a Merchant Marine during the Second World War. Lawrence moved to North Sydney in 1957 and was employed as a steward on the Marine Atlantic vessels until his retirement in 1980. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, and of the Knights of Columbus. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He is survived and will sadly missed by his loving wife of 62 years Lucy (Collier) Long; also by his 17 children, daughters, Roseleen (the late Tom) Collier, Phyllis (Steve) Clarke, both of North Sydney, Mary (Alex) Campbell, Sydney, Betty (Sheldon) Burton, with whom he resided, Carrie (Thomas) Boutilier, St. Catharines, Ont., Louise (Stephen) Smith, Mabel (Connie) Scott, both of Halifax, Christine (Melvin) Devoe, Port Williams; sons, Eric (Margie Ramsay), Lawrence Jr. (Judy), Garfield (Louise), Simon (Mary) and Paul (Glenda), all of North Sydney, Bernard (Karen Musgrave), St. Catharines, Ont., Kenneth (Susan), Dartmouth, George (Elaine), Sydney, Gerald (Sharon), Port Williams. Lawrence is also survived by 46 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by brothers Leonard and Stan, sisters Margaret and Lucy, several step-brothers and step-sisters.
Visitation today (Monday) 2 to 4, 7 to 9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral Mass 10 a.m. Tuesday, at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation or to a charity of choice.
Lawrence will be fondly remembered for his kind heartiness, friendly smile, his love for a friendly game of cards and a love for music and dancing.
The Knights of Columbus members are asked to gather for prayers this evening at 7:15 p.m. at the Funeral Home.

Sandra MacNeil
47, New Waterford
Mrs. Sandra MacNeil, 47, of 55 Fifth St., Glace Bay, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the youngest daughter of Emma and the late Joseph Murphy, MacKay’s Corner, Glace Bay.
Prior to Mum’s illness, she was involved in various bowling leagues which included both mixed and singles.
She was a loving mother and friend to her children. Mum took pride in watching us grow and succeed.
Our mother is survived by one son Jimmy MacNeil, at home; three daughters, Rhonda Marshall and boyfriend, Terry Roach, Halifax, Nicole Marshall and husband Scott Timmerman, Rainbow Lake, Alta., Stacey MacNeil, Etobicoke, Ont.; three sisters, Barbara and husband Gary O’Brien, Gardiner Mines, Donna MacPherson-Hill, Glace Bay. Priscilla and husband, John MacLean, Dominion; two brothers, John and wife Inez, Bridgeport, and Joseph and wife Sharon, Dominion. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. Also a special grandson Jarret William Timmerman, four months old, Rainbow Lake, Alta., and a Goddaughter Janet Evans whom she loved and admired.
Mum was predeceased by her husband James (Jimmy) whom she missed greatly.
Our Mum was brave, courageous and strong. We know she will be greatly missed by many people.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be held Tuesday, Aug. 29 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Paul McGillvray officiating. Private burial to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the family may be made in Sandra’s memory.

Michael (Mick) James O'Brien
71, New Waterford
Michael (Mick) James O’Brien, 71, of 245 Curran St., New Waterford, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, N.S., he was the son of the late Jack and Jane (Neville) O’Brien.
Mick was a member of All Saints Anglican Church in New Waterford. He was formerly employed with Husband’s Transport and C.N. Route in Toronto, and he was a member of the Teamsters Union. Mick was a member of the New Waterford Pensioners Club as well as a former member of the Glace Bay Legion. He was an avid dart and card player at Curran Court.
He is survived by his daughter Eileen O’Brien, New Waterford; two step-daughters, Ulean (Mrs. Wildred McNeil), New Waterford, and Debbie (Mrs. Carl Brewer), Scotchtown; three step-sons, Robert (Lynne), British Columbia, Tom (Lil), and Joey, both of New Waterford; a brother Ben (Catherine), Glace Bay; two sisters, Kathleen Robinson, Glace Bay, and Mary Landry, Toronto. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Kristy and Michael and a number of step-grandchildren.
Mick was predeceased by his first wife Barbara Eva MacLeod and his second wife Marie Pheifer. He was also predeceased by three sisters, Agnes, Alice and Catherine, five brothers, Jack, Patrick, Lawrence, Thomas and Daniel.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in All Saints Anglican Church, New Waterford, Rev. Paul Findlay officiating. Cremation to follow along with a private burial in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown, at a later date.

George F. Parsons
63, North Sydney
George Francis Parsons, 63, a resident of 175 Peppett St., North Sydney, died suddenly Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in St. John’s, Nfld., he was a son of the late George and Elizabeth “Betty” (Peters) Parsons. He was employed as Chief Purser with Marine Atlantic in North Sydney for 37 years until his retirement in 1992. He was an active member of St. Joseph’s Church, was treasurer of Knights of Columbus Council #5109, North Sydney, and was a volunteer with Revenue Canada.
Surviving are his wife Theresa (MacInnis) Parsons; four daughters, Tracy Lynn (Shane) McDonald, Halifax, Jennifer and Francine, both of Halifax, Lisa, Calgary; two brothers, Lloyd (wife, the late Anna), Blackett’s Lake, Brian (wife Valerie), Lower Sackville; a sister, Maureen (Mrs. Jack Lanigan), Halifax.
George was predeceased by a sister Geraldine (Gerry) (Mrs. Ken Carter) of Halifax.
Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, North Sydney. Funeral Mass Wednesday 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church with Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or the Canadian Cancer Society.
Knights of Columbus members are asked to gather for prayers Tuesday 7:15 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ronald S. Piercey
72, Sydney
Roland S. Piercey, 72, of 118 Melissa Crescent, formerly of Royal Avenue, Sydney, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Robert and Alfreda (Roberts) Piercey. He was a member of St. Theresa’s Parish, Sydney. Prior to his retirement in 1991, he worked at the Sydney Steel Corporation for 21 years. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Surviving are three daughters, Debbie (Mrs. Ron Starkey), Porter’s Lake, N.S., Cindy Piercey (James Vergie), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Heather (Mrs. John Munro), St. John, N.B.; three sons, Steven (Alexandra), Sydney, Scott (Amy), Howie Center, Bruce (Heather), Stillwater Lake, N.S. Grandpa Rollie will be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Ryan, Taylor, and Brandon Starkey; Amber Piercey; Alex MacIntyre; Samantha Piercey; Cameron Vergie; Kathleen Munro; Jared and Courtney Piercey.
Predeceased by four brothers, George, Walter, Wilfred, and Robert.
The late Mr. Piercey will have visitation today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Theresa’s Church. Rev. A. MacDougall officiating with interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Cameron Alexander Morrison
Baddeck
Cameron Alexander Morrison, Baddeck, the infant son of Jennifer Gammon and Andrew D. Morrison, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Surviving are loving grandparents, Vanda and Bert Hart, Margaree Valley, Darrell Gammon, Winchester, Ont., Marilyn and Paddy Morrison, Baddeck; also great-grandparents, Katherine and Ewan MacLean, Baddeck, Harriet Morrison, Baddeck, Laura Oland, Sydney and Katherine Hart, Margaree.
Private family burial will take place in St. Andrew’s United Church Cemetery with the Rev. Gordon MacLean officiating.
Arrangements under the direction of MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck.
