Mary Anita Collier
61, Sydney Mines
Mary Anita Collier, 61, of 235 Tobin Rd., Sydney Mines, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, at home.
Born in North Sydney, Mary was a daughter of Francis MacKinnon Prince and the late Roderick Francis MacIntyre.
Mary was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, North Sydney. Mary had worked at the Northside Guest Home before retiring.
Survived by her husband, Joseph Collier; a daughter, Sharon, Calgary and her granddaughter, Kayla. Mary is also survived by her stepfather, Louis Prince.
She was predeceased by one son William (Billy).
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be held Friday, Sept. 1 at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Sorrows Church, North Sydney, with Fr. Peter Piva officiating.
Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Gordon William Ross
79, Halifax
Gordon William Ross, 79, of Halifax, suddenly Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000.
Mr. Ross was a professional engineer, graduate of UNB and served as sgt. navigator, RCAF.
He was employed by Canadian General Electric for 43 years and was manager of the apparatus and heavy machinery department for Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.
Mr. Ross resided in Sydney, Cape Breton, for many years where he was vice-president of Sydney Rotary Club at the time of his transfer to Halifax.
He was president of Halifax Rotary Club and was named a Paul Harris fellow. Mr. Ross was a life-member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia, life-member of the Mining Society and CIM. He was also president of the Halifax Branch of the Mining Society of Nova Scotia, president of the Nova Scotia Mining Society. He received the CIM District one proficiency medal and the life fellowship award for his contribution to the mining and community. As an avid outdoorsman he was an active member of the Nova Scotia Wildlife Association.
Gordon was very active in the Halifax community and with St. Andrew’s United Church where he served on the board of stewards. He will be sadly missed by his loving family and many friends.
He is survived by his wife, Edith (Robson); son, Kirk, Halifax; daughters, Mary Elaine Bell and husband Ron, Nancy, Moncton; grandchildren, Nicholas and Sarah Smith and step-granddaughters, Lisa and Julie Bell.
Mr. Ross was predeceased by brothers, Donald and Walter and a son, Greg.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Aug. 31, 3 p.m. St. Andrew’s United Church, Coburg Road.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Rotary Club of Halifax, Charitable Trust Fund, St. Andrew’s Restoration Project, Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.

Earl Wambolt
68, Sydney
Earl Wambolt, 68, of Grand Lake Road, Sydney, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, at home.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late George and Ida Mae (Beech) Wambolt. He was employed with Sydney Steel Corp. for 40 years and was a member of Grand Lake Road Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of United Baptist Church, Sydney.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, the former Annabel (Pyke); one son, Glen (Shirley), Sydney; two daughters, Joanne (Malcolm) Steeves and Faye, both of Sydney and close family friend, Cathy Butler; five brothers, Frank, Pawley (Chick) and Erne, all of Sydney, Gordie, Mull River and Melvin, Hamilton, Ont.; six sisters, Grace (Saunders), Thelma (Nicholson), Janet (Doran), all of Sydney, Marilyn (Ryan), New Waterford, Velzora (Tiny) Campbell, New Brunswick and Ada (MacArthur), Halifax. Earl will be sadly missed by six grandchildren, Melissa, Vincent, Robert, Ashley, Amy and Sonja.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Ace and George and one sister, Erna Nicholson.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday) from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will be held in the chapel Friday, 11 a.m. with Rev. Willis Henderson officiating. Burial in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the VON.

Ronald J. Clancy
84, North Sydney
Ronald Joseph Clancy, 83, a resident of East Street, North Sydney, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, surrounded by his loving family at the Harbourview Hospital, Sydney Mines.
Born Nov. 20, 1916 in North Sydney, he was a son of the late Thomas and Mary (Foley) Clancy.
He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas with the Canadian Army, Provost Corp. He was employed as a stevedore with CN Marine in North Sydney, for 50 years, retiring in 1981. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He is survived and will be sadly missed by his devoted and loving wife of 59 years, Adelaide (Barrie) Clancy; two daughters, Marie (Mrs. Reg MacDonald), North Sydney and Sharon (the late Ernie) Morrison, Sydney River; one son, Ronald (Marlene), Leitches Creek; eight grandchildren, Sharon (Mrs. Ricky Cousins), Ronnie and Sean MacDonald, Janice and Ross Clancy, Shannon, Kristen and Ernie Morrison.
Ron was predeceased by brothers, Frank, Fred, Jim and John, sisters, Emily and Mamie Winfield.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today (Thursday) in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney with Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or the Northside Hospital Foundation.
Ron will be fondly remembered for his dry sense of humor and great concern for his family. He will be sadly missed by his eight grandchildren. “We love you Grampie”

Charlotte Barbara Duco
70, New Waterford
Charlotte Barbara, 70, of 375 Gibbon St., New Waterford, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Archibald David McIsaac and Christina Ann (Groves) Mclsaac.
Mrs. Duco was a member of Mount Carmel Parish and the New Waterford Pensioners Club. She enjoyed bingo and a game of cards.
Surviving are two daughters Ann Louise, New Waterford, and Hanna, (Mrs. Chester MacAulay), Ontario; three sons, Frank and Tony, both of New Waterford and Jimmy, Ontario; two brothers, John D. McIsaac, New Waterford and Peter MacPherson, Ontario; five sisters, Sarah Jane (Mrs. James Mahon), Christina Roach, both of New Waterford, Frances, (Mrs. Edward Martell), Theresa Rigby and Margaret Bastarache, all of Ontario, 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Rannie Duco, a sister, Mary Henry and brothers, Archie McIsaac and Willie MacPherson.
Visitation is in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, Thursday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral Friday 11 a.m. Mount Carmel Church, Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.

Katherine Mary Harris
87, Glace Bay
Katherine Mary Harris, 87, of Seaview Manor, Glace Bay, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Margaree, she was the daughter of the late James and Isabel Catherine (Carmichael) MacDonald.
Katherine was a member of Glace Bay Baptist United Church, she taught Sunday School for 30 years, she was a member of the Ladies Guild, a life member of WMS, a former member of the Glace Bay General Hospital Auxiliary. She held various offices in the church and was a member of the Red Cross during the Second World War.
Katherine is survived by a son, James Robert (Thelma), Glace Bay; grandchildren, Laurie (Todd) Burns, Cathy Harris, Robbie (Sherrie) Harris; great-grandchildren, Jessica and Courtney Burns; sister, Jean Curtis, Sydney; brothers, James, Dartmouth and Ross, Waterloo, Ont.
She was predeceased by her husband, James Robert Harris in 1992; also by an infant daughter and a brother, Walter.
Visitation will take place Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Saturday, Sept. 2 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jennifer Smart officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay.
Family flowers only, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
