Emmeline Mary Anne Lewis

Emmeline Mary Anne Lewis, 83, of 770 Lingan Rd., Sydney, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, at home.
Born in River Bourgeois, Richmond County, she was the daughter of the late Francis (Frank) and Mary Agnes (Pate) MacPhee.
She was a member of Holy Redeemer parish, Whitney Pier. Emmeline loved her family and spent her life seeing to their needs as a homemaker and mother.
She is survived by three daughters, Theresa (Carl) Powell, Sydney, Deanna (Daniel) Martell, Londonderry, N.S., Victoria (Alex) St. John, Sydney; three sons, Ernest (Raylene), with whom she resided, Russell (Eita), Sydney, Roy, Sydney; two sisters, Elizabeth (Betty) Lewis, Sydney, Emmabelle MacDonald, Toronto; brother, Donald (Mary) MacPhee, New Waterford; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Merle in 1976, her son, Nicholas in infancy, three sons, Stanley, Ronald and Francis, brothers, Eliard and Leonard MacPhee, sister, Catherine (Kate) MacIntee, several brothers and sisters in infancy and her granddaughter, Theresa Lewis.
Visitation will be in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, today (Thursday), 7-9 p.m. and Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday, 11 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Memorial donations may be made to the Palliative Care Society or to a charity of choice.
Catherine M. MacNeil
70, Sydney
Catherine M. MacNeil, 70, of Ferry Street, Sydney, formerly of Scotchtown, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000, at home.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Neil and Catherine (Farrell) MacDonald.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Sydney. Catherine had a great love for her family and her faith including her animals Lucy and Angus. In her earlier years she was an avid bingo, dart and card player.
Surviving are her husband of 51 years, Murdock; two daughters, Ann and Jane, both at home; three sons, Joey, at home, Lawrence, Calgary, and Leonard (Theresa), Sydney; a sister, Marilyn MacIssac, Scotchtown and a step-brother, Bernie Farrell, New Waterford. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Rodd, David, Stephen, Michelle and Jennifer and close family friend, Georgina Johnston.
Predeceased by a daughter, Elizabeth, sons, Roderick and Angus and a brother, Neil.
The late Mrs. MacNeil will have visitation today (Thursday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Sacred Heart Church with Rev. A. O’Connor officiating. Cremation to follow. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Catherine (Kaye) Chiasson Steele
84, Sydney
Catherine (Kaye) Chiasson Steele, 84, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, at the Breton Bay Nursing Home, Sydney.
Born in Margaree Forks, Jan. 7, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Henry (Norie) and Louise (Chiasson) Chiasson.
She is survived by daughters, Ann and husband, Doug Falconer, Sydney, Rose and husband, Robert Belot, Calgary; sons, Robert and wife, Josie, Sydney; John and wife, Caroline, Coldstream, B.C.; sisters, Rose Leblanc, Margaree Forks, Grace Bourque, Salem, N.H., Dora Cameron, Toronto and Isabel Wludyka, Sydney; brothers, Alex Dan, Sydney and George, Detroit; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harry Steele in 1994, sisters, Margaret, Annie, Sophie and one sister, Christina, brothers, Bernie, Victor, William, Vincent, Leo, Arthur, Fabian and John.
The remains are resting at Sydney Memorial Chapel Friday, 7-9 p.m. and Saturday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service at St. Michael’s Church Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Peter MacLeod officiating. Burial in St. Michael’s Cemetery, East Margaree.
Douglas R. Allen
78, North Sydney
Douglas Reginald Allen, 78, a resident of Allen Drive, North Sydney, died Thursday, June 29, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Pottle’s Lake, North Sydney, he was the son of the late Reginald and Keith (Turner) Allen.
Doug retired from Allen Ice Company Ltd., a family-owned business. Doug was an adherent member of Calvary Baptist Church, North Sydney, and was a veteran of the Second World War serving overseas with the Canadian Army.
He is survived by his wife, the former Georgia Ross; sister, Joyce Carroll (Gervase), North Sydney; sister-in-law, Mary Allen, North Sydney; a nephew, Brent Carroll, North Sydney. Doug is also survived by a ‘special daughter’ Gina.
Besides his parents, Doug was predeceased by his stepmother, Alma, a sister, Clara and a brother, Lorne.
There will be no visitation by request. Funeral service will be held Monday 3 p.m. from the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Pleasant St. North Sydney, With Rev. Allison MacLean and Rev. Richie Robinson officiating. Burial to follow in Lakeside Cemetery.

William Charles Carrigan
51, Lingan
William Charles Carrigan, 51, of Lingan, died Friday, June 30, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of former Eileen Gardiner and the late Charles Carrigan.
He was a member of Saint Joseph’s Church, Lingan. He worked for Devco for 17 years in No. 20 and No. 12 and Lingan collieries. He retired in 1983 due to ill health.
Bill will be sadly missed by his wife, the former Barbara Kelly; daughter, Anne and son, Michael, both at home. Also surviving are brothers, Tony, New Waterford, Jimmy (Karen), Beachmount Road, Ray (Melinda), New Waterford, and Michael (Collette), River Ryan; and by sisters, Beverly (Mrs. Leo MacLean), Scotchtown, and Marie (Mrs. Frankie MacPherson), New Waterford.
Visitation for the late William Carrigan will be held Sunday 7-9 p.m. and Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Saint Joseph’s Church, Lingan, with Fr. Bob Neville officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Paul Carroll

Paul Carroll of Braintree, suddenly, Thursday, June 29, 2000.
Beloved husband of Anne (Dunn) Carroll. Loving father of Paul L. Carroll and his wife Cathy, Lowell, Patricia Lydon, Avon, Ellen Donnelly, Avon, Theresa Campbell and her husband Ed, Weymouth, Kevin Carroll and his wife Darlene, Florida, Donna Sargent, Onset, Susan Sanger, Avon and Margaret Cratty, Onset. Devoted brother of Martin Carroll, Nova Scotia, James Carroll, British Columbia, Thomas O’Flaherty, Ontario and Mary Flannigan, Nova Scotia. Also survived by 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Born in Nova Scotia, Canada, he died at South Shore Hospital, June 29 at the age of 74. He grew up and attended school in Nova Scotia, Canada. He was a retired oil burner technician. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Braintree, and the Whitney Pier Historical Society in Sydney, N.S.
Reposing at the Cartwright-Venuti Funeral Home, 845 Washington St., Braintree until 8:15 a.m., Monday followed by a funeral mass at 9 a.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Church, Braintree. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Sunday 4-8 p.m. A private burial will be held at a later date in Sydney, N.S.
