Ryan Googoo
66, Waycobah
Ryan J. Googoo Sr., 66, of Waycobah First Nation, died Friday, June 30, 2000, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Whycocomagh, he was a son of the late Michael P. and Helen (Sylliboy) GooGoo. He was a painter by trade and a journeyman carpenter. A member of the Holy Trinity Parish, Waycobah. He enjoyed sports, fishing, camping, cooking and children. He served as a councillor for the Waycobah First Nation for some 28 years before retiring from politics four years ago.
He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Victoria Pierro; daughter, Renita (Martin) Bernard, Whycocomagh; sons, Ryan Jr., Eric, Roger, Richard, Carl and Shane, all of Whycocomagh; sisters, Mary (Andrew) Bernard, Whycocomagh, Anna K. (Francis) Pierro, Watmatcook, Germaine (Philip) Martin, Truro, Geraldine (Michael J.) Paul, Whycocomagh; step-sisters, Barbara Matheson, Truro, Matilda Pierro, Whycocomagh, Bridget (Lester) Johnson, Chapel Island; brothers, William, Truro, Alex, Watmatcook, Bernie and Stanley, both of Whycocomagh; step-brothers, Donald and Henry, both of Whycocomagh; 16 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by brothers, Gabriel, Michael, step-brother, Wayne, sisters, Alice and Annie Jeanette. Visitation will be after 7 p.m. today at the family residence, 9318 Trans Canada Highway, Waycobah. Funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday in Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Rev. Bernie MacDonald officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Arrangements entrusted to Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Whycocomagh.

Carlyle Johnston
86, Glace Bay
Carlyle Johnston, 86, of 158 Victoria St., Glace Bay, died Sunday, July 2, 2000, at his residence.
Born in Joggins Mine, N.S., he was the son of the late John James and Mary (Snow) Johnston. He was a member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay.
Mr. Johnston was manager of the Four Star Mine in Broughton; from there he was employed in the office at No. 26, Colliery until his retirement.
Carlyle is survived by three sons, Roy (Wendy), British Columbia, Lester (Sharon), Porters Lake, N.S. and Bob (Lynn), Glace Bay; a daughter, Mary Johnston-Brown (Raymond), Glace Bay; six grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. Also one sister, Eleanor Slack, Newcastle, Creek, New Brunswick; a brother, Weston, Maitland, Ont.
Predeceased by his wife Edna Johnston in 1998, one sister and two brothers.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Cremation has taken place. Friends are invited to join with the family for a memorial service 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Marconi Street, Glace Bay, with Rev. Canon Fev Arnold officiating. Burial will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or a charity of one’s choice are suggested as memorials.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay.

Nelson MacDonald
87, Glace Bay
Nelson MacDonald, 87, of 80 Wallace Road, Glace Bay, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 1, 2000, after a brief illness at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Dominion, he was the son of the late John A. and Catherine (MacCormick) MacDonald. He was a veteran of the Second World War, having served overseas.
He is survived by his son, Jack (Mary) MacDonald, North Sydney; daughters, Jane Anne Fraser, Glace Bay, and Rose (Jack) MacDonald, Dartmouth. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Nelson, Scott, Donnie, Anjanette, and Jaclynn; a brother Tony and a sister Florence.
He was predeceased by his wife the former Jeanette Gouthro; brothers, Kenny, Gordon, Clifford, Russell and Alexander.
Visitation will be today (Monday) at McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, from 12-1:30 p.m. followed by funeral mass at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Paul McGillivray officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Robert A. (Bob) MacDonald
91, Sydney
Robert A. (Bob) MacDonald, 91, of Bentinck St., Sydney, passed away Saturday, July 1, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late John C. and Mary (MacLeod) MacDonald of Sydney. He was employed as a pharmacist with Manson Drugs, first at the Iron City Pharmacy and later the Woolco Pharmacy in Sydney River.
He was a Second World War veteran, having served overseas as a Regimental Sergeant Major with the 9th Field Ambulance in Italy and Northern Europe. He was a member of Branch 12 Legion, Sydney.
He was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish, a member of the senior choir, and served on parish council. He was active in the Boy Scout movement for 50 years, serving as scoutmaster and District Commissioner. He was a past member of the Cape Breton Chordsmen Barbershop Chorus.
He is survived by his wife, the former Virginia Jessome; five sons, Robert (Heather), Bedford, N.S, Ian (Aggie) Sydney, Greg (Sharon), Sydney, Michael, Halifax, and Gerald (Melissa), Sydney. He is also survived by his brother, Bernard D. of Sydney and five grandchildren, Heather, Ian, Sheilah, Stephen, and Justin.
He was predeceased by his sister Mary Ellen in 1994.
Visitation for the late Mr. MacDonald will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel today (Monday) 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass Tuesday at 2 p.m. from St. Anthony Daniel Church, Alexandra St., Sydney, with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Anthony Daniel Church Music Ministry

Mary Catherine (Robinson) Burton
74, St. Margaret's Village
Mary Catherine (Robinson) Burton, 74, of St. Margaret’s Village, Victoria Co., Cape Breton, died July 3, 2000, at the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII.
Born April 16, 1926, in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Herbert and Mary Catherine (Fader) Robinson. She was a member of St. Margaret’s Parish in St. Margaret’s Village, Victoria Co., and also attended St. John Vianney Church in Lower Sackville during the winter months with her daughter. She enjoyed playing bingo and living life to its fullest. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are her husband, Allen T. Burton, St. Margaret’s Village; daughters, Mary Falconer, Lower Sackville, Colette Flynn, Bedford; sons, George, William, Ontario, Lawrence, Sydney, Peter, Hammonds Plains Road, Lloyd, St. Margaret’s Village; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son, Edward, in infancy, brothers, Eddie, Herbert, George, William, Dalo.
Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m., Wednesday in Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Drive, Lower Sackville. Funeral mass 10 a.m. Thursday in St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church, Lower Sackville, Father Gerald David officiating. Interment in Oakridge Memory Gardens, Old Sackville Road.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 23 Laurie Drive, Lower Sackville, N.S., B4E 1G1.

Robert (Chummy) Lee
Oct. 13, 1939 - May 17, 2000
On Friday, July 7, 2000, at 6:30 p.m. at St. Michael’s Parish, River Ryan, there will be a service held for “Chummy” who passed away on May 17, 2000, in Woodstock, Ont., surrounded by his loving family.

Marjorie Peck
75, Albert Bridge
Marjorie Peck (nee Watt), 75, of Brickyard Road, Albert Bridge, died peacefully in her home on Thursday, June 29, 2000, at 1:15 a.m.
Mrs. Peck was for the past 22 years director of Howard House, Sydney, and will be remembered for her important contribution to the correctional field.
Mrs. Peck was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Joseph, and her sister, Esther Thomas.
She will be deeply missed by her children and their loved ones, James, Dennis (and Brenda), Helen (and Carlos) Gurr, Frances (and Karl Comete), Jonathan (and Veronica Centofanti), and Andrew, and by her grandchildren, Christopher, Kathleen, Cooper and Bryn, as well as by her sister, Lynn Hart and her brothers, Dennis and Frank Watt.
Mrs. Peck was a long-time member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Mira Ferry.
No visitation. Funeral services at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 1, in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
