Dr. Norman MacLean

Dr. Norman James “Dr. Jim” of Inverness, N.S., died July 3, 2000, at Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital, Inverness, N.S.
Born September 23, 1920, son of the late William Vibert and Mary Agnes (McIntyre) MacLean, Port Hawkesbury, N.S.
Dr. MacLean received a BSc. from St. Francis Xavier University in 1941, and his M.D.C.M. from Dalhousie University Medical School in 1945. Prior to coming to Inverness in 1948 as general practitioner he practiced in Sheet Harbor and Port Hawkesbury. His surgical residency was 1954 to 1958 in Massachusetts and Halifax returning to Inverness in 1958. Dr. Jim devotedly served the people of Inverness County as a family doctor and surgeon until his retirement, due to failing health, in 1989. He sat as a Progressive Conservative Member of the Legislative Assembly of Nova Scotia from 1963 to 1974, and returned to public life and served as a Member from 1984 to 1988. He was a Member of the Canadian Medical Association, Senior Member of the Nova Scotia Medical Society and a former Member of the Provincial Medical Board.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy “Toby” Tobin; daughter, Ann MacLean, Halifax; sons, James (Aranka), Windsor, Ont., and Robert (Lois), Inverness; sister, Viberta (John Angus) MacNeil, Brighton, Michigan; brothers, Dr. Bernard (Jean) Inverness, and William Joseph (Glenda), Port Hawkesbury. Also survived by ten grandchildren, David and Michael Levy, Halifax; Susan and Barbara MacLean, Inverness, Laura MacLean, Sussex, New Brunswick; Erica, Kyle, Dean, Lisa and Maria MacLean, Inverness, and one great-grandson, Cole MacLean, Inverness.
e was predeceased by his daughter Barbara Jean MacLean, sister Eileen Yates and grandson Paul Levy.
No visitation by request. Funeral services will be held at Stella Maris Church, Inverness, at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 6. Cremation to follow.

Mary Theresa Beaton
91, Sydney
Mary Theresa Beaton, 91 of Breton Bay Nursing Home, formerly of 312 Esplanade and also a long time resident of Sydney’s North End, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Health Care Complex, Monday, July 3, 2000, after a long illness.
Born at Carbonear, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary Josephine (Murphy) Donnelly and stepdaughter of the late Mary (O’Keefe) Donnelly of Carbonear.
Theresa was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Parish and the parish CWL. She was also a member of St. Anthony Daniel. She was a life member of Branch 12 Royal Canadian Legion, honorary charter member of Club 55, member of the Steelworkers Pensioners Club and a 25 year member of Club 55 Rhythm Band.
Theresa participated in the bowling, shuffleboard and dart leagues of the various clubs she was involved with. She was a well known tarbish player and loved her card games. She always had a smile and a quick wit. She will be sadly missed by all her friends and family.
Surviving are eight children, four daughters, Evelyn Ruthven (Ike), Vernon, B.C., Beverly Dinn (Michael), Orleans, Ont., Barbara Bagnell (John), Bordon, Ont. and Judy, Sydney; four sons, Arthur (Josie), Montreal, Jack, Sydney, Kenneth (Florence), Sydney and Robert (Rose), Sydney; three sisters, Lois Walsh (Pat), Gwen Ward (Ray) and Genevieve Murphy; two brothers, Joseph Donnelly (Winnie) and Vince Donnelly (Mary), all of Cambridge, Ont.; 26 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Sheila Beaton.
Predeceased by her husband, William James Beaton in 1949; one son, James Michael Beaton and one granddaughter, Maureen.
The late Mrs. Beaton will have visitation today (Wednesday), 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 9 a.m. Friday in Sacred Heart Church with the Rev. A. O’Connor officiating. Interment to follow.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Rachel Butler
86, Sydney
Rachel Butler, 86, of Breton Bay Nursing Home, formerly of Richmond Street, Sydney, passed away Monday, July 3, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late John Malcolm and Mary Agnes (MacDonald) MacDonald.
Rachel was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 138, ladies auxiliary, and a former member of the Sydney Steelworkers and Pensioners Club. She was an avid reader and card player.
Surviving are her daughters, Carol (Edward) Fiander, Halifax and Anne (Harvey) Johnstone, Sydney; sons, Robert (Barbara), Willowdale, Ont., and Gordon, Sydney; sisters, Annie MacDonald, Cassie Pilon, Catherine Nemis and Chris MacDonald, New Waterford and Alma Rame, Ontario; brothers, Jerome and Colin, both of New Waterford; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Rachel was predeceased by her husband, Fred in 1979; son, Ernest; sister, Margaret and brothers, Frank, Archie, Angus and Bernard.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel today (Wednesday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held in St. Theresa’s Church on Thursday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Angus MacDougall officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Stewart Michael Gould
58, Chapel Island
Stewart Michael Gould, 58 of Chapel Island, died Monday, July 3, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of Peter Michael and the late Annie (Sylliboy) Gould, Chapel Island. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Barra Head. He was employed by the Union of Nova Scotia Indians and was on leave from the N.S. Strait Richmond Hospital Drug Dependency Commission. He was formerly employed with Native Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling Services.
He is survived by his wife, the former Irene Stephens; one daughter, Paula (Jay) Marshall, Eskasoni. Also survived by four grandchildren.
Besides his mother, he was predeceased by one brother, Stephen Anthony.
The late Mr. Gould will be resting at the home of his brother-in-law, George Stephens, Chapel Island, with visitation all day today (Wednesday). Funeral will be held at Immaculate Conception Church, Barra Head, Thursday, 11 a.m. with the Rev. Duncan MacIsaac officiating. Cremation to follow. Interment in Membertou Memorial Gardens at a later date.

Mary Emma Mercer
New Waterford
Mary Emma Mercer, 95, of 3457 McNeil Avenue, New Waterford, passed away Monday, July 3, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Bay Roberts, Newfoundland she was the daughter of the late William and Mary Crane.
She was a member of the New Waterford Salvation Army and the Salvation Army Home League.
She is survived by sons, Louis (Juliana) and Wilfred (Audrey), both of New Waterford; sisters, Jean Meadus, Belle Island, Nfld. and Edith Rowe, St. John’s, Nfld., 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Isaac, sister, Myrtle Turtle, brothers, Stephen, William, John and Louis.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Mercer will be held Wednesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. Funeral service will be held Thursday 2 p.m. in the Salvation Army Citadel, New Waterford with Major D. Baggs officiating. The remains will be transferred to the Citadel at noon. Interment will be in Union Grove Cemetery.
Roger Wadden
58, Port Morien
Roger Wadden, 58 of Port Morien, died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Port Morien, he was a son of the late Wilfred and Margaret (Cochrane) Wadden. He was a full time fisherman and fishing was the love of his life.
He is survived by brothers, Weldon and Kenny (Brenda), both of Port Morien; sister, Theresa, Port Morien. He is also survived by special nieces, Nancy and Kenna and nephew, Wilfred Wadden.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by one sister, Hazel.
Visitation will be in Curry Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, with Rev. Peter LeBlanc officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Donations in Roger’s memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, St. Mary’s Cemetery Fund or to a charity of choice.
