John James Roach
New Waterford
A memorial service will be held for John James Roach, formerly of Roaches Road, New Waterford.
He was the son of the late John James Roach and the late Florence (Johnston).
Johnny is survived by his wife, Margaret (Giles), Ontario; his two sons, Matt (Dianne), Pugwash, N.S. and Rod (Chris), Brampton, Ontario; stepdaughters, Roxanne (Rob) Grezel, Ontario, Tammy (Logie) Emstie, Pugwash, N.S.; stepson, Dale, Ontario and former wife, Julianne Desveaux, Port Hawkesbury. He is survived by brothers, Matt (Ruth), Bernie (Madge), Rob (Nicky), Anthony (Pat), all of Calgary; sisters, Pat (Paul) Grezel, River Ryan, Bernadine (Jerry) Karperien, Carmel (Bob) Thomson, Caroline (Warren) Evans, all of Calgary.
Johnny also leaves behind grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by sisters, Mary, Theresa Johnston and by brothers Earl and Jay.
The memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 18, at 2 p.m. at Mount Carmel Church in New Waterford. Following the service a lunch will be held at the home of Johnny’s sister, Pat Grezel of River Ryan. All those wishing to take part in this celebration of a life are invited to attend.
Catherine (Katie Bell) MacIntyre
86, Sydney
Catherine (Katie Bell) MacIntyre, 86, passed away peacefully at the Breton Bay Nursing Home on Saturday, July 15, 2000, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in West Mabou, she was the daughter of the late Angus and Margaret (MacDonald) Campbell. A long-time resident of Boisdale, she was a member of St. Andrew’s Parish until she took up residence in the Seniors Complex, Westmount, from where she moved to the Breton Bay Nursing Home in 1998.
She is survived by one son, Norman, Ontario; grandson, John Joseph and great-grandson, Nolan, Halifax; two granddaughters, Barbara, Sydney and Karen, Halifax; daughter-in-law, special friend and loyal caretaker, Delores MacIntyre, Beaver Cove; a sister, Annie MacKinnon, Detroit, as well as many nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed by her life-time friend and companion Janet Cameron, Boisdale.
She was predeceased by her husband Joseph Alex, son, John Angus, three sisters, Mabel, Sister Patricia and Catherine, brothers, Dan Joe, Pat, Sam, Danny, Sandy, and Sammy and Gene, who died in early childhood.
Visitation 2-5, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, in St. Andrew’s Church, Boisdale. Funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 19, with burial in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to the North Unit of the Breton Bay Nursing Home.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.
Linda MacDonald
44, North Sydney
Linda Christena MacDonald, 44, a resident of Musgrave Lane, North Sydney, died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
She was born in North Sydney and was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church.
Linda is survived by her husband, Blair; daughter, Tena (Clinton); son Robert, both at home; grandson Tyler; four sisters, Marie Forrest, North Sydney, Tena (Mrs. David Glogowski), Sydney Mines, Betty (Mrs. David Ripka), Lindsay, Ont., and Kathy (Mrs. Steve Murphy), Lantz, N.S.; four brothers, Steven (Mary) Curnew, British Columbia, Winston (Maureen) Fudge, Ottawa, Patrick Cooper, Toronto, and Harris Cooper, Toronto. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
No visitation by request. A funeral service will be held Monday (today) 2 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Archdeacon Reg MacDonald officiating. Burial to take place at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Palliative Care of Cape Breton.
Carmel Mary Longphee
63, New Waterford
Carmel Longphee, 63, of 3094 East Lane, New Waterford, died Sunday, July 16, 2000, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Hector Allan C. and Annie (Hennessey) MacDonald and foster father Terrance McIntosh.
Carmel was a member of St. Agnes Church in New Waterford. She was an avid card player and loved a good card game.
She is survived by her long-time and loving companion Andrew Tabensky. Carmel is also survived by two daughters, Cathy Dupe and Wendy Penney, both of New Waterford; a son, Gordon, Cole Harbour. She is also survived by foster mother Marge McIntosh; six brothers, Junior McIntosh, New Waterford, Francis McIntosh, Newfoundland, Charlie McIntosh, Henry McIntosh, Russell McIntosh, all of New Waterford and Joseph McIntosh, Calgary; four sisters, Anna Skinner, Ontario, Donna Roy, London, Ont., Carol, and Elizabeth, both of New Waterford.
Carmel is also survived by four loving grandchildren, Vanessa and Loretta Dupe, Christopher and Kyle Penney.
She was predeceased by daughters, Loretta, Debbie, Theresa and a daughter in infancy Theresa Marie, two sons, Stephen and Tony.
Visitation will take place Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford (862-6439). Funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Agnes Church. Fr. Bob Neville officiating. Cremation to follow.

Mary Hilda Jobe
78, Glace Bay
Mary Hilda Jobe, 78, of 128 Maple Ave., Glace Bay, passed away Saturday, July 15, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, with her family by her side.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late James and Elsie (Lewis) Miller of Mira.
Mary was a member of St. Anthony’s Church in Glace Bay. She retired from the dietary department at the former Glace Bay Community Hospital. Mary was a long-time member of the Happy Gang Club and at one time she belonged to a ladies hockey team. She will always be remembered as a loving and dedicated mother.
She is survived by four sons, Lorne (Wendy), Dominion, Daniel (Marie), Ajax, Ont., Johnny (Diane), Agincourt, Ont., and Laird, Mississauga, Ont.; a brother, Eddie Miller (Lee), Mira; two sisters, Edie (Frank), Victoria, B.C., and Jean McCall, Ontario; seven grandchildren, Lorne, Danelle, Paul, Peter, Michael, David, and Debra Jobe; a great-grandchild, Liam Jobe. Also surviving are special niece and nephew Amy and Edison Miller.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Daniel Jobe who died August 12, 1977, two brothers, James and Dougie Miller and a son James.
Visitation will take place this evening (Monday) from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay (849-4505). Funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday 10 a.m. in St. Anthony’s Church, Glace Bay, with Rev. Peter LeBlanc and Rev. Eric Lynk officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy for Mary donations may be made to Palliative Care, Cape Breton Health Care Complex or a charity of choice.
Marion (Toots) Lydia Brewer
92, Sydney River
Marion (Toots) Lydia Brewer, 92, of Sydney River, passed away Monday, July 17, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Grandeville, N.B., she was a daughter of late Alexander and Ella Mae (West) MacArthur.
Marion was a member of the Sydney River United Church and a long time member of St. Andrew’s Church.
Marion is survived by four sons, Henry, Halifax, Brian (Karlene Morris), Parrsboro, Stewart, Sydney and John-Mac (Cheryl), Sydney and 10 grandchildren.
Marion was predeceased by her husband, Henry, five sisters, Ethel Wilson, Mimi Horseman, Annie in infancy, Augusta Latimer, Blanche Beaton, three brothers, Lester, Albert and Lloyd.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, today (Tuesday), 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in Sydney River United Protestant Church Thursday, 11 a.m. with the Rev. Bernice Spracklin officiating. Interment in Alfred Smith Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel.
