Peter M. Briand
91, Sydney
Peter M. Briand, 91, of Breton Bay Nursing Home, formerly, Royal Court, Sydney, passed away at the nursing home on Wednesday, July 19, 2000.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Grant (George) and Julia (LaBoard) Briand.
Peter was a steelworker for 48 years. He was a member of Club 55 and the Sydney Steelworkers and Pensioners Club.
Surviving are his daughters, Charmaine (Fred) Onley, Ontario, and Martha (Eric) Leblanc, Port Hawkesbury; a son, Peter Jonathan, Ontario; a sister, Bessie Sampson, Sydney; a brother, Johnnie, Sydney; 14 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Peter was predeceased by his wife, Florence (Timmons), a daughter, Florence, sisters, Madeline Currie and Emily Briand, and a brother, Francis, in infancy.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Sunday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held in St. Joseph’s Church, Monday 10 a.m., with Rev. Dan MacDonald officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimers Society.
Dr. Abraham Risk
68, Vero Beach, Fla.
Dr. Abraham (Fishy) Risk, 68, of Vero Beach, Fla., formerly of Morristownship, N.J., Inverness and Sydney, N.S., passed away in the Indian River Memorial Hospital, Vero Beach, Fla.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Solomon and Alice (Khattar) Risk of Sydney.
He was a former member of Sacred Heart Parish. He studied at St. FX and Dalhousie University and then practiced medicine for five years in Inverness. He furthered his studies in obstetrics and gynecology at Cornell University and received two PhDs from Johns Hopkins University.
Dr. Risk then taught obstetrics/gynecology at Cornell University Medical School and Columbia Medical School. He became assistant director of the Obstetrical/Gynecology Department at the Cornell University Medical School and later transferred to Columbia University. For the past 20 years, he was director of obstetrics/gynecology at Morristown Memorial Hospital, Morristown, N.J.
Growing up in Sydney, Dr. Risk enjoyed various sports including hockey and baseball. More recently, he took part in boating and golf.
Surviving are his loving wife, Macey (Pike) Risk; three sons, Robert, Lake Hopatcong, N.J., David and Douglas, both of Vero Beach, Fla. He is survived by one brother, Jacob (Jake), Dartmouth, and two grandchildren.
The late Dr. Risk will have visitation Saturday 7-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held Monday at 9 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, George Street, Sydney, with Fr. A. O’Connor officiating. Interment to follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. A reception will be held following the interment at the Cedars Club, 30 MacKenzie St., Sydney.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Michelle Marie Snyder
59, Fall River, N.S.
Michelle Marie Snyder, 59, passed away at Fall River, N.S., on Wednesday, July 19, 2000.
Born in New Waterford, C.B., she was the daughter of Genevieve (McKay) Deveaux and the late Michael F. Deveaux.
She was a retired school teacher and she was loved by all who knew her. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church and belonged to its choir, Sacristans, the CWL, and was a Eucharistic minister.
Surviving are her son, Vincent Snyder (Laura), Enfield; brothers, Joseph Deveaux (Betty), Toronto, Gerard Deveaux (Jean), Port Hawkesbury, John Deveaux, New Waterford, and Timothy Deveaux (Cathy), Toronto; sisters, Eunice McCarthy (Edward), New Waterford, Carol Steele (Ronald), New Waterford, Angela McKinnon (Greg), New Victoria, C.B.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jerry and her sister, Pauline.
There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Fall River, Saturday, July 22, at 11 a.m. with Fr. Ken Robertson officiating. Burial to follow at Oakridge Memory Gardens, Lower Sackville.
In Michelle’s memory donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the St. Rose of Lima Building Fund would be appreciated.

Rita Elizabeth (Lizzie) MacDougall
81, New Waterford
Rita Elizabeth (Lizzie) MacDougall, 81, of 245 Curran St., and a former resident of 442 12th St., New Waterford, died Friday, July 21, 2000, at her residence.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Ann (Leonard) O'Connell. She was a member of Mount Carmel Church. She enjoyed playing cards with the ladies where she resided.
Surviving are two daughters, Margaret (Mrs. Cyril Power), Lingan, Judy Jessome, New Waterford; one son, Jeffery (Verla), New Waterford. Also surviving are six granddaughters, Georgia MacDougall, Sonya Vardy, Kim Desveaux, Donna MacIsaac, Paula Jessome, Sheri MacDougall and six great grandchildren. Rita is also survived by one brother, Patrick O'Connell, New Waterford.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Joseph MacDougall, one sister, Mary Roach and five brothers, Ambrose, William, Clarence, Danny and Jimmy.
Visitation for the late Rita Elizabeth MacDougall will be held Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral will be held Monday, 10 a.m. in Mount Carmel Church with Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Margaret (Peggy) MacNeil
100, Gillis Point
Margaret (Peggy) MacNeil, 100, of Gillis Point, Victoria County, N.S., died Friday, July 21, 2000, at Alderwood Guest Home, Baddeck.
Born in Gillis Point, she was the daughter of the late Neil Stephen and Annie (MacKinnon) MacNeil.
She was a member of St. Columba Catholic Church, Iona.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by four brothers and four sisters.
The body is resting at St. Columba Catholic Church, Iona, with visiting hours 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Sunday, July 23. The funeral will be held Monday, July 24 at St. Columba Church with Rev. Fred Morley officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made the Alderwood Rest Home.

Phyllis Louise Morrison
77, Florida
Phyllis Louise Morrison, 77, in Sarasota, Fla. Formerly of Oakville, Ont., died Monday, March 27, 2000.
She was born in Grand Bay, N.B.
She founded and managed Phyl Morrison Realty Company in Oakville, Ont., during the late 1950s and most of 1960. After her husband's retirement from the Canadian Armed Forces the couple mmved to Sarasota, Fla., where they owned and operated the Siesta Shores Motel.
She and her husband spent the summers in Sydney at their residence at 21 Ritchie St. She was active in several charities in Florida and a member of St. Boniface Episcopal Church.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Duncan S.; a sister, Helen Carson, Oak Point, N.B.; sister-in-law, Mamie McMaster, OakvilIe, Ont.; daughters, Diane Riley, Ottawa, Margery Meier, Clifton Park, N.Y.; son, Norman H., Ottawa; and five grandsons.
Memorial service will be held at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Framboise, July 29 at 2 p.m.. Interment will take place in Riverside Cemetery. A reception will follow in St. Andrew's Hall.
