Carmen Charles Wayne Sparkes
52, Sydney
Carmen Charles Wayne Sparkes, 52, of Rotary Drive, Sydney, passed away Thursday, July 20, 2000, at home.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late John and Violet Sparkes. He was a member of the Salvation Army, Whitney Pier.
Surviving are brothers, Gorden, Melvin, Woodrow, Gerald, Roy, Donald and Ernest; one sister, Audrey. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, Garfield and Winston and two sisters, Evelyn and Shirley.
The late Mr. Sparkes will have no visitation. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at 2 p.m. in Sydney Memorial Chapel followed by interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery with Lt. Paul Blake officiating.
Family flowers only, donations may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Cancer Clinic.
Vivian Amelia (Millie) Thistle
81, Sydney Mines
Vivian Amelia (Millie) Thistle, 81, a resident of the Northside Community Guest Home, North Sydney, and formerly of 12 Dwyer St., Sydney Mines, passed away Thursday, July 20, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in North Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Rita (Annesty) Gallop.
Millie was employed as an agent with Canada Customs in Toronto for many years. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney.
She is survived by two sons, John (Colleen) Thistle, Salt Lake City, Utah and Bruce (Anne) Thistle, Ottawa; one brother, Cliff (Shirley) Gallop, Sydney Mines; one sister, Margaret Dunn, Toronto; grandchildren, Tricia Thistle, B.C. and Bryan Thistle, Ottawa.
She was predeceased by her husband, John (Marvin), brothers, Ben, Everett, George, Harry, Mel and Raymond and one sister, Ada.
Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
Funeral service will be held Monday, 2 p.m. from St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Brenda Drake-MacDonald officiating.
Burial to follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army.
Tom Cummings
Howie Center
On Friday, July 21, 2000, with his devoted wife Julie at his side, Tom lost his three-year struggle with cancer. He battled the disease in every way he could. He extensively researched brain tumours and participated in an experimental gene therapy program at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre in Halifax. Tom willingly shared this acquired knowledge by addressing service clubs and professional associations. The vigour with which he fought this disease was typical of his determined nature.
Tom resided at 14 Wildwood Drive, Howie Centre, but most of his life was spent in New Waterford. He was born and raised there, attended Saint Agnes High School and graduated from Dalhousie University’s College of Pharmacy in 1974. With his good friend and business partner Donald Morrison, he owned and operated Pharmasave drugstores in New Waterford, Sydney, and Whitney Pier, retiring due to his ill health. Tom served on committees of the Pharmacy Association of Nova Scotia and the board of Pharmasave National Limited. For two terms he was the President and Chairman of the Board of Pharmasave Atlantic Limited. He was a former member and President of the New Waterford Rotary Club and was a supporter of the New Waterford branch of Junior Achievers.
He was husband and best friend to Julie (Yhard), a proud and loving daddy to his son Jonathan of Westmount, a son of Anna (Anna Rita MacMillan) and the late Raymond Cummings of New Waterford, a brother to Sheila, New Waterford, Doreen (Darius Powell), Howie Centre, Cyril of Chester, N.S., Joan (Rick Pierrynowski), Sydney River, uncle to Andrea Powell (Allan Benoit), Saint John’s, Nfld., Iain Powell (Melinda Kinney), Ottawa, Ont., Ainslie and Andrew Pierrynowski, Sydney River. He will be dearly missed by his mother-in-law Alma Yhard and Julie’s family, Jerry and Judy Yhard and sons Jason and Mark, Valerie and Paul O’Brien and Shane and Shelby, Kirk and Ann Yhard and Kayla, Ryan, and Candace.
Visitation will be held Monday, July 24, 7 -9 p.m. and Tuesday, July 25, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, with mass at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 26, at Saint Agnes Church, Convent St., New Waterford. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
The family would appreciate donations to the Dalhousie University Medical Research Foundation, Cape Breton Palliative Care Society or a charity of one’s choice.

Agnes MacNeil
79, Boisdale
Agnes MacNeil, 79, a resident of Boisdale, died Saturday, July 22, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital in North Sydney.
Born in Rear Boisdale, she was the daughter of the late Elizabeth MacNeil.
Agnes was a member of St. Andrew’s Church in Boisdale. She was also a member of the Senior Citizens Club in Boisdale and was a member of the Boisdale Volunteer Fire Department Mixed Dart League.
Surviving are an uncle Michael (Mickey) MacNeil, Boisdale, a Godson Michael MacNeil, Cole Harbour, first cousins, Jimmy MacNeil, Mississauga, Ont., and John Malcolm, Sydney River and by several cousins.
Predeceased by her mother.
Visitation will be held Monday beginning at 2 p.m. in St. Andrew’s Church in Boisdale from where the Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday 11 a.m. with Rev. Joe Ambrose MacNeil officiating. Burial to follow in St. Andrew’s Parish Cemetery, Boisdale.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
Nora Agnes (Nonie) Deveaux
75, Boisdale
Nora Agnes (Nonie) Deveaux, 75, of 3160 Ledrew St., New Waterford, died Sunday, July 23, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Reserve Mines, she was the daughter of the late Alex and Catherine (Finnell) MacEachern.
Nonie was a member of Mount Carmel Church and was a member of the Mount Carmel CWL. She was also a member of the New Waterford Pensioners Club. Nonie was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her husband, Calixte A. Deveaux; three daughters, Diane (Mrs. Steve O’Brien), Louisville, Ky., Darlene and Marion, both of New Waterford; two brothers, John Angus MacEachern, Framboise, Robert MacEachern, Glace Bay; two sisters, Bea Leblanc, New Waterford and Catherine MacDonald, Reserve. Nonie is also survived by five grandchildren, Stephen, Kenny, Cindy, Kelly, Brittany and three great-grandchildren, Garrett, Dalton and Patrick.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Roddie, Michael, Walter, Roy, Johnny, her twin who died in infancy and two sisters, Mary Fraser and Sadie MacEachern.
Visitation for the late Nonie Deveaux will be held today (Tuesday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral will be held Wednesday, 3:30 p.m. in Mount Carmel Church with Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the dialysis unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Helen Jessie Morrison
75, Sydney
Helen Jessie Morrison, 75, Lisgard Street, Sydney, passed away after a long, courageous battle with cancer, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney on Sunday, July 23, 2000.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Neil and Cassie (Dawson) Shaw.
In her working days, Helen was employed at Swift Canadian. She was an adherent of St. Andrews Church, Sydney, and a member of Loch Lomond United Church and the UCW Unit 6, Sydney.
Helen did volunteer work with Loaves and Fishes and the local unit of the Cancer Society. She also enjoyed painting and quilting.
Surviving are her husband, Kenneth; son, Lloyd, Ottawa; brother, Alex, Baddeck and several nieces and nephews.
Helen was predeceased by her sister, Ruth and brother, Donald.
There will be no visitation. Helen’s body has been donated to the Department of Anatomy at Dalhousie University. There will be a memorial service held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Wednesday, 2 p.m., with Rev. Anthony Ware, assisted by Fr. Albert Maroun officiating. Interment of ashes in Pioneer Cemetery, Loch Lomond, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Loch Lomond United Church, or the Salvation Army.
