Catherine Harriet White, RN
66, Sydney
Catherine Harriet White, 66, of George Street, Sydney, passed away, in the presence of her loving family, on Friday, July 28, 2000, at the Cape Breton Region Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Louisdale, she was the daughter of the late W.S. and Blanche (Peeples) Urquhart.
Catherine graduated from the City Hospital School of Nursing in 1955 and enjoyed a lengthy career in the nursing profession with both the Cape Breton and City hospitals, until her retirement in 1994.
She is survived by her husband, Edward Kenneth; children, Blanche (Brian) Thomey, Sydney, Wally, Barrie, Ont., Kendra (Robert) MacDonald, Sydney, Bill (Elaine), New Glasgow, Lloyd (Susanne), Sydney, Laura (John) Rykunyk, Sydney, and Julia, Sydney; nine grandchildren, two residing at home, Devan and Kirkland; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Leslie Anne (Bunny) Urquhart, West Bay.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Joan Spurell and a son in infancy.
Visitation for the late Catherine Harriet White will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Saturday 7-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-4, 7-9 pm. A funeral service will be held in the chapel Monday 11 a.m., with Rev. Ralph Johnston officiating. Interment to follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Lung Association, or a charity of one’s choice.
Bernard Joseph (Cod) Dawson
75, Sydney
Bernard Joseph (Cod) Dawson, 75, of Grand Lake Road, Sydney, passed away Saturday, July 29, 2000, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Joseph and Mary (LaLard) Dawson. Bernie first worked at the Docks at Sydney Steel Plant and retired from the Blast Furnace in 1980. He was a veteran of the Second World War and member of Royal Canadian Legion 128, Whitney Pier. Bernie was a charter member of the Grand Lake Road Volunteer Fire Dept. He was a well-known baseball player in his early years and also active in bowling and darts.
Bernie was a member of St. Augustine’s Parish, formerly a member of Holy Redeemer Parish.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years (Kay) Kathleen Farrell; two daughters, Dianna (Jim) Leon, Deep River, Ont. and Cheryl (Gerard) McPhee, Glace Bay; a son John J. (Barbara), Scarborough, Ont.; grandchildren, Michelle and Vincent Leon; Shannon and Tara McPhee and Bernard Dawson. Also surviving are four sisters Alice Hooper, Mary Dawson and Jennie O’Callaghan, all of Sydney, and Dora Clarke, Scarborough, Ont.
Bernie was predeceased by two sisters, Rosie Reid and Dora Danielak; six brothers, Nick and John Dawson, Peter, Charles (Curley), Raymond and Arthur Doucette.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with funeral mass in Holy Redeemer Church Tuesday 11 a.m. with Rev. Errol MacDonald and Rev. James Attwood officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Memorials may be made to Cancer Clinic or Palliative Care of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Earle James Donovan
87, Neil's Harbour
Earle James Donovan, 87, of the Highland Manor, Neil’s Harbour, formerly of Ingonish Beach, passed away Sunday, July 30, 2000, at the Manor.
Earle was born and raised at Ingonish Beach and was a son of the late Tom James and Flo (Doyle) Donovan.
He was a member of St. Peter’s Parish, Ingonish Beach, a Eucharistic Minister and a member of the parish choir for more than 65 years. Earle was owner and operator of a grocery store and ran a chartered tourist boat for a number of years. He was a school bus driver for 27 years and was a key organizer in the formation of the C.U.P.E. Union Local 981 (Northside-Victoria District School Board) serving as Treasurer of the Local. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Ingonish Beach. In his earlier years, Earle served as president of the Holy Name Society, served on the parish council and was chairman of the local board of school trustees. Earle was very well known for his singing.
Surviving are his wife, Geri, Ingonish Beach; four daughters, Flora Ann (Mrs. Freeman Whitty), Charlottetown, PEI, Judy (Mrs. Doug Whitty), Antigonish, Melanie Donovan, Dartmouth, and a step-daughter, Linda (Mrs. Clarence Pippy), Amherst; two sons, Frank (Debbie), Ingonish Beach, and Stephen (Jeannette), Dartmouth; two brothers, Leo, Ingonish Center and Traynor, Glace Bay; 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Frances; two sons, Frank and Earle Joseph; three sisters, Irene, Theresa, and Frances; two brothers, Isadore, and Duncan.
The late Mr. Donovan will have visitation tonight (Monday) from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Ingonish. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter’s Church, Ingonish Beach, with Fr. John Morrison officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made to St. Peter’s Parish Cemetery Fund or the Highland Manor, Neil’s Harbour.
Beatrice Gouthro
86, Halifax
Beatrice Gouthro, 86, passed away at Glades Lodge, Halifax, on Friday, July 28, 2000.
A memorial mass for the late Mrs. Gouthro will be held at 11 a.m. at St. Agnes Church, New Waterford. Interment will be in the parish cemetery under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford.
Florence Ann MacLean
70, Glace Bay
Florence Ann MacLean, 70, of 181 Reserve St., Glace Bay, died Saturday, July 29, 2000, at home.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late George and Mary (MacDonald) Scott. Florence was a member of St. Anne’s Church in Glace Bay. She was an avid pie baker. Florence loved people and she expressed this in her helping ways with others.
She is survived by her special friend, Ivan Gouthro; three daughters, Patsy (Ted Cass), Port Hawkesbury, Dianne (Winston Francis), Kitchener, Ont., and Margaret, Edmonton; two sons, Joseph (Kathy), London, Ont. and Hector (Bernice), New Waterford; two brothers, Douglas (Mary) Scott, Stratford, Ont., Harry Scott, Kitchener, Ont.; sister, Lena (Mrs. Bob MacLean), Sydney; 10 grandchildren, Kim, Amanda, Jodie, Brandon, Kayalah, Lacey, Stephen, Heather, Eric and Dale; three great-grandchildren, Delaney, Kirsten, and Anthony.
She was predeceased by her husband Neil Joseph MacLean; four brothers, Neil Scott, George Scott, William Scott and Murray Scott.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A memorial mass will take place from St. Anne’s Church Wednesday, Aug. 2, at 10 a.m. with Fr. Doug Murphy officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.
John (Jack) MacMillan
88, Coxheath
John (Jack) Neil MacMillan, a life-long member of MacMillan Road, Coxheath, died Sunday, July 29, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Rear Balls Creek, he was the son of the late Alexander and Catherine (MacPherson) MacMillan. He was employed for many years with the N.S. Department of Lands and Forests and prior to that farmed his own land. He was an honourary life member of the Knights of Columbus #1060, Sydney, and was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Frenchvale.
Jack was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving are many cousins and good friends.
He was predeceased by his sister Catherine Ann (Nan) MacMillan and by a brother in infancy.
Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today (Monday) in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Church, Frenchvale. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery.
