Donald Morrison
95, Wreck Cove
Donald John “D.J.” Morrison, 95, of Wreck Cove, died peacefully July 30, 2000, in Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck.
Born in Wreck Cove, he was the eldest son of the late Alex “A.J.” and Mary “Molly” (MacLeod) Morrison. He was a life-long member and elder of Bethel United Church, French River. D.J. faithfully took his place in the church choir. He shared the gift of song, notably the Gaelic favourites, in his fine, strong voice throughout his lifetime.
He is survived by his loving sisters, Sarah Rowe, Wells, Me. and Katherine MacDermid, Westmount.
He was predeceased by his wife, Annie Margaret; brothers, Murdock and Angus; sisters, Margaret Hines and Dolly Morrison.
The body is resting in St. Ann’s Bay United Church, with visiting hours today, July 31, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 1, in St. Ann’s Bay United Church, Rev. Laurie MacCuish officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Wreck Cove.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Arrangements entrusted to MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck.
Cecilia (Sis) Brown
85, Glace Bay
Cecelia (Sis) Brown, 85, a resident of Paradise Complex for 17 years and a recent resident of Seaview Manor passed away Thursday, June 1, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Victoria Village, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late George and Elizabeth King. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Brown is survived by her chosen daughter, Jeanette “Janet” (Mrs. Ernie Stevens), Glace Bay; granddaughters, Barbara (Mrs. Sam Ryall), Halifax, Nicole (Mrs. Alex Leslie), and Natalie Stevens, both of Glace Bay; great-grandchildren, Raechelle Stevens, Brandon Leslie, both of Glace Bay, Allison Ryall and Amanda Ryall, both of Halifax.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Chester, grandson, Ernest Robert Stevens, several brothers and sisters.
There will be no visitation for the late Mrs. Brown. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home and Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, Monday at 2 p.m. with Fr. John Graham officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Donations in Mrs. Brown’s memory to the Cape Breton Cerebral Palsy Association, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or the Canadian Cancer Society are suggested as an expression of sympathy.
Donald F. Simms
68, New Waterford
A former resident of Ninth Street, New Waterford, and a resident of Braemore Home, died July 30, 2000, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Elias and Margaret (MacDonald) Simms. He was a member of Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford.
Surviving are his brothers, Harold, New Waterford, Norbet, St. Catharines, Ont., Ronnie, Toronto, Ont.; sisters, Mrs. Theresa Jocko, Mary Lou (Mrs. Kevin Luedey), both of New Waterford.
He was predeceased by sisters, Mrs. Mabel Mason and Carmela Todd, both of Ontario.
No visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass at a later date from Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford.
Gladys Rachel LeBlanc
89, Alder Point
Gladys Rachel LeBlanc, 89, Alder Point, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at the Alderwood Guest Home, Baddeck.
Surviving are 10 great-grandchildren.

Julie MacDougall
53, Sydney
Julia MacDougall, 53, of 15 Glenwood St., Apt. 5, Sydney, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at home.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late John “Woody” and Eva MacDougall. She was a former resident of Halifax and Dartmouth for a number of years.
Surviving are common-law husband, Bill Peacock; a daughter, Tanya Lynn Peacock, London, Ont.; a stepdaughter, Anne-Marie, L’Ardoise; three sisters, Midge (Mrs. Leo Gracie), Glace Bay, Elsa Estwick and Ann Fraser, both of Sydney; one brother, Clevie, Ottawa and five grandchildren.
Predeceased by three sisters, Carol, Melda and Mary and a brother, Michael.
The late Ms. MacDougall will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, today (Thursday) 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Parkview Chapel. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery, Sydney.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
W.R. (Shannon Woodill) MacDougall
Halifax
Shannon MacDougall passed away at the QEII Hospital in Halifax on Monday, May 29, 2000.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Earle and Marjorie Woodill of Sydney.
Surviving family members include her daughter, Ann Louise, three granddaughters and one grandson, along with brothers, Fred, Lake Ainslie, Ronald, Dartmouth, Ben, Sydney and a sister, Deloris, Sydney.
Funeral service will take place at Snow’s Funeral Home, Windsor Street, Halifax 1-4 p.m. Thursday with cremation to follow.
Al MacQuarrie
54, Marion Bridge
Allistair Ewan MacKillop MacQuarrie, 54, of Marion Bridge, passed away peacefully at home, on Tuesday, May 30, 2000.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Angus and Sarah (MacKillop) MacQuarrie.
Al attended Xavier College, Sydney Campus and N.S. Agricultural College in Truro. He was a member of the United Church. An avid outdoorsman, Al enjoyed hunting, especially in the Lake Ainslie and Loch Lomond area. He was an enthusiastic member of the Black Powder Club and participated in the historical encampments at Fortress Louisbourg.
Al enjoyed spending time with his two Great Dane dogs and his “Pet” horses.
He was a longtime member of the Masonic Lodge, and the clown unit of the Shriners Club. Al was a union member of IATSE and worked on various productions as carpenter, lead, and construction coordinator. Al previously worked as a service manager in the automotive industry, in the local area. In his earlier years, he operated an International trucking dealership in Sydney.
He is survived by his spouse, Paula Lamie; three sons, Bradly (Annette), Scott (Raynelle) and Matthew MacQuarrie, all of the Halifax area; two stepchildren, Kara Mertens, Halifax and Jonathan Mertens, at home; and one sister, Donna (Jack) Himmelman, Yarmouth.
Besides his parents, Al was predeceased by a sister, Moira in infancy.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel today (Thursday), 7-9 p.m. and Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel Saturday, June 3 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Luker officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to Philae Temple, Sydney.
Al will be greatly missed by his many friends and neighbours who will remember his practical jokes and sense of humour.
