Margaret Blanche Highman
92, Stellerton
Margaret Blanche Higham, 92, of Stellarton, Pictou County, and formerly of 28 Cottage St., Sydney Mines, died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at the Glenn Haven Manor, New Glasgow.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Alice (Miller) Fraser.
She was a member of Carman United Church and was a stenographer/bookkeeper employed with the BC Co-op, Thompson and Sutherlands and Laytons Lumber. She was also a former member of the Order of the Eastern Starr, Johnson Chapter.
She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Ann Manning, with whom she resided in Stellarton; sister, Ann West, Sydney Mines; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Hugh, son, Hugh, sisters, Jennie, May, Olive and Nellie and brothers, John, Lester and Russell.
Visitation will be in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home today (Friday) from 7-9 p.m. and Saturday from 2-3 p.m. when funeral services will be held in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Karen Ralph officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.
As memorials, donations may be made to Carman United Church, The Glenn Haven Manor, 739 East River Rd., New Glasgow, B2H 5E9, or to a charity of choice.
Everett Johnston
80, Ontario/Sydney
Everett Johnston, born at Sydney, N.S., on Nov. 22, 1919, son of the late Donald John and Annie (Morrison) Johnston, passed away at Etobicoke, Ont. on Saturday, May 27, 2000.
He was a veteran having served in the Second World War.
Beloved husband for 54 years of Gwen, dear father of Audrey and her husband, Ray Whittem, Everett and his wife Corinne, and Jay (John). Loving grandfather of three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Beloved brother of Margaret Sedgwick, Pearl Richardson and Donald Johnston.
Predeceased by sisters, Irene Johnston and Helen Morrison.
Funeral service was held at Billingsley Funeral Home, Huntsville, Ont., Tuesday, May 30.
Gladys MacSween
73, Sydney
Gladys MacSween, 73, of Breton Bay Nursing Home, formerly of 749 Alexandra St., Sydney, passed away Thursday, June 1, 2000, at the Breton Bay Nursing Home, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Angus and Margaret (MacLeod) MacSween.
Gladys was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church and worked for many years with the Civil Service in Halifax.
Surviving are her nieces, Marguerite Penny, Ruth Morrison, Donna Burns, Malena Horianopoulos and Wendy MacSween; nephews, Laird, Roy and Russell MacSween.
Gladys was predeceased by her sisters, Anna Mae O’Brien, Bessie, Kathleen, Edith and Ethel MacSween and brothers, Donald Hugh and Roy MacSween.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel today (Friday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the chapel Saturday, 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Lyle officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Louis Marinelli
82, North Sydney
Louis Marinelli, 82, of 80 Regent St., North Sydney, formerly of 52 Atlantic St., Sydney Mines, died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Carlo and Maria Marinelli.
He was employed at Princess Colliery for 44 years. Louis was a member of St. Pius X Parish, the parish men’s club and a former member of Council 2024 KOC, Sydney Mines. He was an avid bowler.
He is survived by his wife, Mary (Bryden); daughters, Marina O’Connor, Ottawa and Rita (Jim) Martin, Sydney Mines; son, Carl (Nadia), Halifax; grandchildren, David, Julie, Mark, Bryden, Colin, Eric and Charlie and his great-granddaughter, Mackenzie. Also surviving are his sisters, Angela Marinelli and Toni Marinelli.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Fr. Joe Marinelli, Vincent Marinelli and son-in-law, Russell O’Connor.
Visitation will be held Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will take place Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church with the Rev. Tony MacDonald officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
James Harold Redmond
81, Halifax
James Harold, 81, of Pepperell Street, Halifax, passed away Saturday, May 27, 2000, in Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre, V.G. Site.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late James Robert and Esther (Dakin) Redmond.
During the Second World War he served with the Cape Breton Highlanders Reserve as an instructor. He was employed by Scotia Wholesaler’s and was co-owner with his brother of Argyle Grocery, Sydney. He worked many years for Ben’s Ltd. in Sydney and Halifax, retiring in 1984. He was active for many years in the Sydney Lion’s Club, holding a variety of offices including district governor.
Surviving are his loving wife of 56 years, Anne (Tynski), son, James (Sandra), Hilden; daughter, Noreen (Barry) Maier, Mississauga; son, Brian (Pat), Halifax; grandchildren, Jay (Shannon) and Philip Redmond, Patrick, Robyn and Allyson Dooley and Kimberly Maier, Peter, Erin and Eileen Redmond; great-grandchild, Hunter Redmond.
He was predeceased by brothers, Ralph and Howard and sisters, Muriel Watt, Florence MacMillan, Viola MacLellan and Mabel in infancy.
Visitation was 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, May 30, in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St. Funeral was 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 31, in St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lung Association, Canadian Diabetic Association, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
Florence Catherine Moore
Sydney
Florence Catherine Moore, a resident of the MacGillivary Guest Home, formerly of 11 George St., Sydney, died peacefully in her 90th year, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Friday, June 2, 2000.
Born at Sydney, she was the daughter of the late D.T. and Elizabeth (Poulain) Cameron.
She was an accomplished and well-known seamstress and taught sewing at night school under the old Sydney School Board. Florence was a kind and gentle lady who loved the company of her friends and family and her special caregiver, Helen MacLeod.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 64 years, George Leo Moore; four sons, George (Mitzy), Toronto, Bernie (Gloria), Renforth, N.B., Tom (Anne), New Glasgow and Greg (Amelia), Sydney; 14 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by sisters, Delores and Mildred, brothers, Donald, Bernard, Archibald and Thomas and by a great-granddaughter, Ashley Gloria in infancy.
The late Mrs. Moore will have visitation at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Monday, 9 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church with the Rev. A. O'Connor officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Cape Breton Palliative Care Society, the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of choice.
Charles Gandy William McLeod
A memorial service for the late Charles Gandy William McLeod, who died May 7, 2000, will be held Sunday, June 4 at 2 p.m. in Patten Funeral Home Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, with the Rev. Jim Chisholm officiating. Burial in St. Luke's Cemetery, Donkin.
