Christopher “Kit” Birch

Christopher Birch, of 135 George St., Sydney, passed away Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Stockton-on-Tees, Durham Co., England, he was the son of the late Christopher and Alice (Walmsley) Birch. He served with the Durham Light Infantry regiment in Egypt during the 1950s. Before moving to Cape Breton in 1974, he was employed at the Dominion Bridge Co. in Montreal and with Montreal Engineering.
Surviving are his wife, the former Barbara MacEachern; two daughters, Alice, Montreal, Suzanne, Australia; one son, Dr. Christopher, Montreal; one stepson, Bob, Alberta; six grandchildren, Chantal, Jessica, James, Emily, Victoria and Megan; three sisters, Agnes (Mrs. John Hodgers), Ireland, Rose (Mrs. Ken Marsden), Hamilton, Catherine (Mrs. Peter Overend); two brothers, Cyril (Joan), Hamilton, John, England and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Tony Walmsley.
The late Mr. Birch will have no visitation. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, June 9, 2000, in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel with the Rev. A. O’Connor officiating.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Frances Margaret Bown
96, Sydney Mines
Frances Margaret Bown, 96, of 48 Guy Street, Sydney Mines died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Ada (Moore) Bown. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Sydney Mines. She was employed as a cook in Boston until her retirement.
She is survived by her sister Ethel Conlin, North Dakota, USA, and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her brothers, James, Bernard and David (Speed) and her sisters, Mary Simpson and Ada Gordon and Josephine and Sara Jane in early childhood.
Visitation Thursday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis & Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The Funeral will take place on Friday at 2 p.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Donations may be made to any charity of choice.
Ina Lorna Frederickson (nee Grant)
Edmonton/Glace Bay
On Wednesday, June 7, 2000, Mrs. Ina Lorna Frederickson (nee Grant) of Edmonton, formerly of Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully after a brief illness, with her family at her side.
Ina will be sadly missed but forever remembered by her loving family, her husband of 48 years, Ernie; daughters, Mary (Nick) Yeager, Carol (Scott) Weir and Raun Coates; grandchildren, Michael Yeager, David, Adam, Aaron and Shauna Coates and Bretton Weir. Ina will also be fondly remembered by her brother, Blair (Gloria) Grant; sisters, Lynda (Bill) MacKenzie and Joyce (Jim) Mapes, as well by numerous nieces; nephews; extended family and friends.
Ina was predeceased by her grandson, Kyle Weir, in June, 1991, and her parents Harold and Mary Grant.
A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated in loving memory of Ina on Friday, June 9 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 13 Brower Dr., Sherwood Park, with Fr. Patrick Baska as celebrant. For those who wish to pay their respects, they may do so 15 minutes prior to the Mass.

Colin Hector MacDonald
77, Mira Road
Colin MacDonald, 77, of 23 Melody Lane, Mira Road, passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2000.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late John (City John) and Cassie (MacDonald) MacDonald.
Colin’s service during the Second World War was completed in Toronto. Following the war, he returned to Sydney and continued employment at Sysco, retiring in 1982 after 40 years of service.
One of the founding members of the Mira Road Volunteer Fire Department, Colin’s service spanned more than 46 years and he was granted Life Membership in 1992. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 126.
He was an avid Maple Leaf’s fan, and also one of the original Ushers and a “Rink Rat” at the Old Sydney Forum.
Colin is survived by his wife, Barbara (Harper) MacDonald, four sons, Wayne (Josephine), Westmount, Greg (Nancy), Westmount, Blair (Bernadette), Sydney River, and Brent (Joan), Morrison Road; one brother, Donald (Millie), Whitney Pier; eight grandchildren, Cary, Dallas, Jodi, Ainslie, Lindsay, Ryan, Christopher, and Charnelle; one great-grandchild, Cameron.
He was predeceased by two brothers, William (Willie), Angus; one sister, Margaret.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Thursday, 7 - 9 p.m., Friday, 2 - 4 p.m., 7 - 9 p.m. The funeral service will take place at St. Andrew’s United Church, Bentinck Street, Sydney, Saturday, June 10 at 11 a.m. with Reverend Dale Irving officiating. Internment will follow at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Donations may be made to the Mira Road Volunteer Fire Department, Alzheimer Society, or charity of choice.
James L. MacKinnon
81, North Sydney
James Leslie MacKinnon, 81, of Beacon St., North Sydney, died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, he was the son of the late Herbert and Pearl (Stevenson) MacKinnon.
James worked as a carpenter and contractor most of his life. He was a member of Trinity Anglican Church in Sydney Mines. He was also a member of the Carpenters Union, North Sydney Senior Citizens and Pensioners Club, Fulton Orange Lodge in North Sydney and was a member of Branch #19, Royal Canadian Legion in North Sydney.
Surviving are his wife Marjorie; two daughters, Wanda of Kelowna, B.C. and Marjorie Joan (Mrs. Francis Hawco), Ottawa; three sons, James (Laurie), Dartmouth, Kevin, Dartmouth, and Robert of North Sydney; a sister Lillian Gillespie, Prince Edward Island; and five grandchildren.
Predeceased by a sister Dorothy and two brothers, Harold and Robert.
Visitation will be held Friday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney, with cremation to follow. Memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday from Trinity Anglican Church with Rev. Brenda Drake MacDonald officiating. Burial to follow at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens in Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Loretta (Lil) O’Handley
70, Glace Bay
Loretta (Lil) O’Handley, 70, of 155 Mansfield St., Glace Bay, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at home, surrounded by family, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Malcolm and Julia (MacKinnon) O’Handley. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Parish.
Lil is survived by one son, Bobby, at home; daughter, Norma Hale, U.S. Virgin Islands; three sisters, Ella (Mrs. Joseph McGillivary), Glace Bay, Frances (Mrs. Stewart Thompson), Glace Bay, Mary “Goldie” (Mrs. Leonard Pynn), Montreal; brother, Alexander “Sandy” (Pat) O’Handley, Ottawa; many nieces and nephews. She will be especially missed by family pet, Buster.
She was predeceased by her parents; sisters, Margaret and Mary; brothers, John and Angus.
Visitation for Lil will be held Friday, June 9 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Saturday in St. Anthony’s Parish at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Lil’s memory may be made to the Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
