John Bernard Pineau
63, Westmount
John Bernard Pineau, 63, of Windemere Dr., Westmount, passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, John was the son of the late Bernie and Vera (MacAulay) Pineau.
John was a former commissionaire at the Canadian Coast Guard College, until his retirement. He was past president and an active life-time member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 126, Westmount.
He is survived by his wife, the former Mary (Sis) Binns, Sydney; two sons, John Jr., Toronto, and Kevin (Michelle), Sydney; two grandchildren, James and Patricia, whom he loved dearly. John is also survived by two brothers, Peter (Gladys) and Alan, both of Sydney.
John was predeceased by both his parents.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
John will be sadly missed and forever loved by all who knew him.
Mary Elizabeth Victoria Thomas
Glace Bay
Mary Elizabeth Victoria Thomas of Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay, passed away Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Neil J. and Annie (Colson) MacNeil of Scotchtown. She was a member of Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay. She was a veteran of the Second World War, having served with the Canadian Women’s Army Corp and was a member of Branch No. 3 Royal Canadian Legion where she served as 2nd vice president and social chairperson. She also volunteered with the Red Cross.
Mrs. Thomas is survived by daughters, Frances (Barbe) Lamothe, Victoria Mines, Cookie (Thomas) Brown and Barbara Thomas, both of Glace Bay; sons, Michael Barbe, Whitby, Ont., James (Jimmy) Thomas, Hawkesbury, Ont. and Neil Thomas, Dartmouth, N.S.; stepdaughter, Ellen Sylvester, Winchester, Ont.; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husbands, Paul Barbe and James E. Thomas, and her sister, Patsy MacNeil.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Thomas will be held today (Thursday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay with Fr. John Graham officiating. Cremation to follow. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
No flowers by request. Donations in Mrs. Thomas’ memory may be made to Taigh Na Mara Bus Fund or to a charity of one’s choice.
Joan Norma Townsend
RN, Halifax
Joan Norma Townsend, RN, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, in the QEII, Halifax.
Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late Allan J. and Margaret (MacIsaac) MacDonald
She received her early education at St. Anne’s School and studied nursing at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Glace Bay, graduating in 1954. She then worked at St. Joseph’s as well as St. Rita in Sydney.
In October 1955 she and Ross were married and spent their early years together living and working in Glace Bay.
In 1969 they moved to Halifax where Joan worked at the Halifax Infirmary. She also taught in the CNA program at Dartmouth Vocational.
Joan is survived by her husband, Ross; son, David (Coleen McNamara) ; daughter, Patricia, and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Annie and Catherine, and her brother, Walter (in infancy), Donald, Mike and Frank.
Visitation will take place at Snow’s Funeral Home on Windsor Street today (Friday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. at St. Pius X Church, Coronation Ave., Halifax.
Burial will take place at a later date in St. Anne’s Cemetery, Glace Bay.
Joan N. Townsend, RN
Halifax, N.S.
Interment for the late Joan N. Townsend, RN, Halifax, who passed away Thursday, June 8, 2000, will take place Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Anne’s Cemetery, Glace Bay.
A memorial service will take place at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Murphy officiating.
Loretta (Lil) O’Handley
70, Glace Bay
Loretta (Lil) O’Handley, 70, of 155 Mansfield St., Glace Bay, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at home, surrounded by family, following a courageous battle with cancer.
The late Mrs. O’Handley was also predeceased by a sister Christina (Mrs. William McMullin).
Richard Allan McNeil
Glace Bay
Richard McNeil passed away Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex in his 52nd year after a valiant struggle with cancer.
The late Mr. McNeil was also predeceased by his mother, Roberta MacGillivary.
Albert “Butcher Boy” McDonald
90, New Waterford
Albert “Butcher Boy” McDonald, 90, died peacefully in the Veterans’ Wing in the Harbourview Hospital, Sydney Mines, on Thursday, June 8, 2000.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Catherine (Dewan) and John James McDonald. Albert was a member of Mount Carmel Church. He had an 18-year boxing career and was inducted into the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame. He fought overseas during the Second World War, was a founding member of the New Waterford Lions Club, a 4th degree KOC member and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, ran his own taxi business, lunch counter and the Belmont Tavern. He and his two sons built and operated the Heather Beverage Room in New Waterford, which they operated until its sale in 1991.
Surviving are two sons, Albert. Jr. (Marlene) and Charles (Patricia) of New Waterford and one daughter Anna Mae, Ontario; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, as well as his second wife, Beatrice (Butt) McDonald.
He was predeceased by his first wife Isabel (Gillis) McDonald and his son, J.J., and as last surviving member of his family, he was predeceased by six brothers and one sister.
The late Mr. McDonald will have no visitation as cremation has taken place under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Homes, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral mass will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Mount Carmel Church, Father Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Albert was very involved in his community throughout his life. May he rest in the peace of Christ.
Curtis James Hinchey
Reserve Mines
Baby Curtis James Hinchey, born April 14, 2000, of 176 Tompkinsville Rd., passed away suddenly Friday, June 9, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of John and Patricia (Bert) Hinchey, and baby brother to Natasha. He is also survived by his maternal grandparents, Cecil and Jacqueline (Jackie) Bert, Reserve Mines; paternal grandparents, William (Billy) and Willena Hinchey, New Waterford; great-grandmother, Hazel Bert, Reserve Mines; godparents, Teddy McRury and Pamela Vatcher. Also survived by many aunts, uncles and special cousins.
Curtis was predeceased by his great-grandfather, Frederick William Bert and great-grandparents, William and Clara Hinchey; Johnny and Hazel Clare and Jack and Willena Tighe.
Funeral service will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford, with Fr. MacGillivary officiating. Burial will follow in Gordon United Church Cemetery, Reserve Mines.
