Frank Dobson
83, Glace Bay
Frank Dobson, 83, of 25 Foundry St., Glace Bay, died of pneumonia at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Friday, June 9, 2000.
Born in Yorkshire, England, he was the son of the late Henry and Charlotte (Cory) Dobson. He immigrated to Canada at the age of three years and was a life-long resident of Glace Bay, where he worked as a carpenter for over 40 years. During his lifetime he enjoyed hunting, fishing, CB radio, photography, gardening and dogs. He will be remembered by those who knew him for his generosity and his feisty spirit.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, George, Harry, James and Charles Dobson and his step-father, William Morrison.
He is survived by one brother, Aulay Morrison, Glace Bay; his sisters, Dora (Dobson) O'Connell, Florence (Morrison) Smith, both of Glace Bay and Willena (Morrison) MacLeod, Homeville, and by 10 nieces and nephews.
According to his wishes, cremation will take place and there will be no visitation or funeral service. His ashes will be interred privately at a later date in St. Mary's Cemetery, Glace Bay.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Mary Catherine Dawson
94, Sydney
Mary Catherine Dawson, one of the city’s most respected residents and a former resident of Glace Bay, died Saturday, June 10, 2000, after a long illness.
Catherine, a widow of the late Michael Dawson, a retired Cape Breton Development Corporation employee, was born in Glace Bay. She was the daughter of the late Alex T. and Catherine (MacDonald) MacNeil.
While in Glace Bay, Catherine resided on Ocean Avenue, where she made her mark serving her community and church. She was a life-long member of St. Anne’s Society, St. Anne’s Parish, Glace Bay. When St. Leo’s Parish was formed in the Sterling area, Catherine became an active member and was a member of St. Leo’s Ladies Auxiliary.
Catherine and her husband moved to Sydney 25 years ago where they became active members in the community of Sydney and St. Anthony Daniel Parish. She joined the Catholic Women’s League of St. Anthony Daniel Parish, where she recently received her 25-year CWL Service Pin.
During her years in these parishes, Catherine gave her time and energy to looking after the church linen, showing her commitment to her faith and love of the church. This service was greatly appreciated by all the priests.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by one daughter, with whom she resided, Judith (Mrs. Kenneth G. MacMillan), 59 Coady St., Sydney, two precious granddaughters, Mary Catherine (Cathy) MacMillan, L’Arche, Mabou, and Michele MacMillan Ferguson (husband Scott), Halifax and her most precious gift a great-granddaughter, Michaela.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Michael A., Stephen B. and Charlie, two sisters, Mary Ann Coleman and Annie Margaret Browner.
She was affectionately known as Aunt Caka to 30 nieces and nephews who often turned to her for guidance and wisdom.
The late Mrs. Dawson will have visitation today (Monday, June 12) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in St. Anthony Daniel Church with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Cape Breton Palliative Care Society or to L’Arche, Whycocomagh.
Phyllis Dicks
86, North Sydney
Phyllis Dicks, 86, a resident of the Northside Community Guest Home, passed away Saturday, June 10, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Rose Blanche, Nfld., she was a daughter of the late Phillip and Elizabeth (Stroud) Strickland. She was a member of St. John’s Anglican Church, North Sydney, and at one time was very active in the ACW and Altar Guild.
She is survived by one son, George and his wife Pauline of Gisborne St., in North Sydney with whom she resided for a number of years; four grandchildren that were the joy of her life, Cyril (Corena) Dicks, Greg (Janet) Dicks, both of Georges River, Wendy (Lowell) MacDonald, Florence and Kenny Dicks, North Sydney; six great-grandchildren that she loved dearly, Jodie Lynn and Michelle Dicks, Tara and Matthew MacDonald, Jacklyn Dicks and Jenna Jardine, one sister, Mary Moffett, Hartford, Conn., USA, also by a number of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Cyril, daughter, Stella Ferneyhough, six sisters, Stella Dolmont, Jennie King, Nora Long, Florence Hatcher, Margaret (Eavis) Snow, Gladys Musgrave and a great-grandson Michael Dicks.
Phyllis was loved by her family and friends and will be sadly missed.
Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Monday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service will be held Tuesday 2 p.m. from St. John’s Anglican Church, North Sydney, with Archdeacon Reg MacDonald officiating. Burial to follow in Lakeside Cemetery.

Marie Edna Gallant
53, Sydney
Marie Edna Gallant, 53, of Townsend Street, Sydney, passed away Friday, June 9, 2000 at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Arichat, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Edna (Skinner) Mugford.
Marie is survived by long time companion Patrick Donovan, two daughters, Lisa (Bernie) McCarthy, Leitches Creek and Sonya Gallant, Sydney; three sons, Jean-Russell, Toronto, Derrick, Truro and Ellis, Keswick, Ont. Also 13 grandchildren; two sisters, Marilyn Harford, Toronto, and Bernice Rowe, Burlington, Ont.; two brothers, Robert and Russell of Glace Bay.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Monday 1 p.m. with Rev. Ralph Johnston officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date.
Memorials may be made to Children’s Wish Foundation or a charity of choice.
James Brown MacQueen
76, Sydney Mines
Mr. James Brown MacQueen, 76, of 10 Butt St., Sydney Mines, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at home.
Born at Front Lake, Mira, he was the son of the late Donald and Mary E. (Brown) MacQueen.
He was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and was employed with Devco until his retirement. He was a member of the Orange Lodge and was an avid outdoorsman.
He is survived by his former wife, Regis Campbell; three daughters, Donna (Mrs. John Arsenault), Sydney Mines, Lois MacDonald, North Sydney, Jacklyn MacQueen, Toronto; four sons, Wayne (Elaine), Lorne and Ronnie, all of North Sydney, James, Edmonton; two sisters, Beth Scott, Sydney Mines, Lois Caldwell, Ontario; his twin brother Norman in Sydney Mines; 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by sons, Donnie and Ricky, a daughter in infancy, sisters, Kaye Ritchie and Marnie MacDonald and his brother Charles.
Visitation will be in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home today from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ian MacLeod officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.
George William (Willie) Murray
65, Glace Bay
George William (Willie) Murray, 65, of 5 Minto St., Glace Bay, formerly of New Waterford, died Friday, June 9, 2000, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late John and Sadie (Wadden) Murray. Willie served in the Canadian Air Force. He worked for many years in Ontario as an industrial electrician. Willie loved the outdoors and spent his spare time camping and fishing. He was loved by his family and many friends for his unique sense of humor.
He is survived by his companion Frances Gillis; two daughters, Debbie Murray, Montreal, and Carmella Masykowski, Toronto; three grandchildren; three sisters, Mary (Mrs. Durling Demont), Dartmouth, Margaret Hopper, Halifax, and Ursula (Mrs. Bernie McIsaac), Kingston, Ont.
Besides his parents he is predeceased by his wife, the former Bridget Nicholson, six brothers, Alfred, Wilbert, Douglas, Arthur, Michael, and John Robert in infancy.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place.
A memorial service will be held in the McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 2 p.m., Tuesday with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Burial in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or charity of choice.
