J. Basil Skinner
83, Sydney River
John Basil Skinner, 83, of Sherwood Drive, Sydney River, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Sunday, June 11, 2000.
Born in Inverness, he was a son of the late Murdock and Eva (Price) Skinner.
Basil served as an Aero Engine Mechanic with the Royal Canadian Air Force in the Second World War and was retired from the CN Railway. He was a member of Sydney River United Protestant Church. Basil was also a member of the Breton Model Railroad Club, the Masonic Lodge, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, and the Westmount Legion, Branch 126.
Surviving are his daughters, Ruth Skinner, Halifax and Margaret (Allen) MacLeod-Hawco, Howie Center; sisters, Sadie Poirier, New Glasgow, Anita Cousins, Halifax and Phyllis Williston, New Glasgow; and a brother, Ernest, Sydney.
Basil was predeceased by his first wife, Evelyn (Mackay), second wife, Georgie (Shaw), and brothers, Errol, Everett, Eldred, and Robert.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will take place in Sydney Memorial Chapel, Thursday at 2 p.m., with Rev. Bernice Spracklin officiating. Interment will take place in Whale Cove Cemetery, Margaree, at a later date.
Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Nurses Education Fund.
Arthur F. Stephenson
72, High Springs, Fla.
Arthur F. Stephenson, 72, High Springs, Fla., passed away on Friday, June 9, 2000.
He was predeceased by and was the son of the late Francis J. Stephenson and Gladys Boone, formerly of Dominion.
Art was a retired building official for the Munroe County Building Department at Plantation Key, Fla.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Katherine (Kaye) McAskill, two sons, Frank and Brian, daughter, Patricia (Horlick), six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, all of Florida; and his sister, Bette Polegato and family, of Dominion.
Fr. Noel Cox will officiate at a memorial mass, Saturday, June 17, at Saint Madeline’s Church, High Springs, Fla.
Jessie A. Brown (Anna)
52, Port Charlotte, Fla.
Jessie A. Brown, 52, of Syracuse Street, Port Charlotte, Fla., and formerly of New Waterford, N.S., died unexpectedly at home, Monday June 12, 2000.
She was born May 23, 1948, in Inverness, Cape Breton, N.S., the daughter of the late Rannie and Jessie MacLellan.
She was educated in New Waterford and moved to the United States in 1968 where she worked in nursing. She was retired at the time of her death.
Survivors include her son, Neil W. Brown Jr. (Billy), Bellows Falls, Vt.; her daughter, Colleen M. (Christopher) Norus, Port Charlotte, Fla.; four sisters, Ruth Miller (David), Hayes River, N.S., Donnetta Holtorf (Ron), Northwest Territories, Margaret Grant (Angus), New Waterford, N.S., Mae Chisholm (Ken), Sydney River, N.S.; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Schlem Funeral Home. Funeral and burial will be held in New Waterford, N.S., at a later date.
Resse Angus Chiasson
Hubley, N.S.
Beloved infant son of Derek and Denise Chiasson of Hubley, N.S., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at the IWK Grace Health Centre.
Reese is survived by a sister, Haley; grandparents, Lester and Eunice Chiasson, Sydney, N.S. and Angus and Debbie LeBlanc, North Sydney, N.S. and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral service was held Saturday, June 3, 2000.
The family wishes to thank all those who helped in time of need.

Robert More
Sydney
It is with deep regret that we announce the death from a sudden heart attack of Robert More.
A native of Glasgow, he served for six and a half years as a member of the Royal Artillery and Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders. After the war, he married an English woman and they migrated with two small children to Cape Breton Island in 1954. A second daughter was born in Sydney.
Bob was a chartered accountant and became financial comptroller at the Sydney Steel Plant. He was later moved to Montreal as a vice-president of Dominion Steel and Coal Corp. and afterwards worked in Toronto with Hawker Siddeley.
In 1984 he happily returned with his wife Nancy to Cape Breton Island to retire. Bob became very active as a member of the Golden K, Celtic Isle Forestry Limited and the Old Sydney Society and in recent years he became a vintner extraordinaire much to the delight of his friends and family.
He will be dearly missed by his wife, Nancy, his children, Jennifer, Jonathan and Elizabeth and seven grandchildren.
There will be no visitation. Funeral service will be held at First United Church, Whitney Avenue, Sydney, Thursday, June 15 at 11 a.m.

William Dawson Walker
72, Dartmouth
William Dawson Walker, 72, of 1 Aldernay Dr., Dartmouth, N.S. passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at home.
Born in Alder Point, he was the son of the late Daniel and Euphemia (Livingston) Walker.
He was a member of St. Peter’s Parish, Dartmouth. He was a merchant seaman for many years and also served in Korea on the Princess Patricia.
He is survived by his sisters, Mary (Art) MacNeil, Sydney Mines, Rita, Alder Point and Theresa (Alex) MacDonald, Florence; his brothers, Bernard, North Sydney, Alex, Scotch Lake and Pat (Mil), Straud, Ont.
He was predeceased by his sister, Leona Merritt and her brothers, Justin (Buddy) Walker and Larry Walker.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. The funeral mass will be celebrated Friday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church, Alder Point, Rev. Bedford Doucette officiating. Burial to take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Bras d’Or.
Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are under the direction of G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.
James B. (Bud) Gallivan
61, Norwalk, Conn.
James (Bud) Gallivan, 61, formerly of Sydney and a long-time resident of Norwalk, Conn., died suddenly near his home on Tuesday, June 13, 2000.
He was a son of the late James and Maria (MacNeil) Gallivan of Whitney Pier.
He was educated at Sydney Academy, St. Francis Xavier University, where he was president of the class of 1960, and earned his doctorate in physical chemistry at the University of Notre Dame.
He was employed for many years as a chemist and later as a senior executive with American Cyanamid Corporation in Wayne, N.J. At the time of his death, he was president of Cytec Industries (Canada) Ltd. while retaining his position as a general manager with its parent company, American Cyanamid.
Mr. Gallivan is survived by his wife, Margie (Hollohan), formerly of Whitney Pier; two daughters, Michele, New York City and Charlene (Ed) Gosart, North Carolina; and two sons, Darryl and Derrick, both of Antigonish County. He leaves one grandson, his pride and joy, Ryan Gosart. He is also survived by sisters, Mary (Earl) LeBlanc, Janice (Brian) Black, both of Sydney; Elaine (Mike) MacPhee, Halifax; brothers Bill (Winnifred), Gary (Karen), both of Sydney and Terrence (Donna), Halifax.
Memorial services are to held in Norwalk, Saturday, June 17. The remains will be cremated.
Donations in memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or his beloved Saint Francis Xavier University.
