Jane Marsh, 89, 366 Arthur St., New Waterford, died Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Gull Island, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late James and Agnes (Doyle) Oliver.
Mrs. Marsh was a member of Mount Carmel Parish. She worked at Eaton’s in Toronto for 25 years up until her retirement.
Surviving are two daughters, Marie (Mrs. Winston Penny), Toronto, Marion (Mrs. Charles Mulveney), Toronto; sons, Robert ‘Bo’ Marsh, New Waterford and Aubrey ‘Duck’ (Helen) Marsh, Toronto; brother, Leo Oliver (Margaret), Toronto; sister, Mary Oliver, with whom she resided; 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Francis, daughter, Lorraine Furgiuele, son, James Marsh, two sisters, Annie and Lillian, four brothers, Joseph, Austin, Dennis and Robert Oliver.
Visitation is in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Homes, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, Friday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral Saturday 11 a.m. Mount Carmel Church, Fr. James Oliver officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Erna Eileen Nicholson
64, Baddeck
Erna Eileen Nicholson, 64, Queen Street, Baddeck, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Wednesday, June 14, 2000.
Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late George and Mae (Beech) Wambolt.
She was a member of the United Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Albert; daughters, Alberta (Philip) Ferguson and Mae (Brent) Stone, both of Sydney; sons, Bob (Annie), Halifax and Art (Bev), Dartmouth; sisters, Grace Saunders, Janet Doran, Buck Ryan and Thelma Nicholson, all of Sydney, Tiny Campbell, New Brunswick and Ada MacArthur, Halifax; brothers, Frank, Earl, Ernie, Paul (Chick) and Gordy, all of Sydney and Mel, Ontario; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Erna was predeceased by brothers, Ace and George and a grandson in infancy.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, today (Thursday), 7-9 p.m. and Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel, Saturday, 11 a.m. with the Rev. Willis Henderson officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Diabetes Association.
Michael Paul Thomson

On Dec. 14, 1999, Michael Paul Thomson of Chase, B.C., passed away suddenly in Kamloops, B.C., at the age of 17 years.
Michael was born in Glace Bay, N.S., on July 8, 1982. As a member of a military family, he lived in numerous Canadian communities. For five months, he resided in Dominion, Cape Breton, attending the school there. Since 1993, he lived in Chase. Michael was a member of Rocky Mountain Rangers Cadet Corps. An avid musician, he excelled in playing the guitar.
He is survived by his parents, Robert and Tiare, Chase, B.C.; his sister, Catherine, Chase, B.C.; birth mother, Linda Martin, Ontario; grandparents, Annabelle (Higgins) Thomson, Glace Bay and Rollie and Dolores Phillips, Chase, B.C.; godmother, Isabell Musial, Glace Bay; many relatives and friends.
A memorial mass will be celebrated in St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines, Monday, June 19 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Jim Oliver officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.

Irene Josephine Buffett
59, Sydney Mines
Irene Josephine Buffett (MacKinnon), 59, of 52 Young St., Sydney Mines, passed away peacefully, Thursday, June 15, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of Annie MacKinnon and the late Neil D. MacKinnon.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Sydney Mines. She was an active member of the Sydney Mines Bowling Leagues, was an avid card player and was employed for a number of years for Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Rahey.
She is survived by three daughters, Irene (Mrs. Ian Morris), Sydney Mines, Nancy (Mrs. Brian Dove), Lisa Buffett (Mrs. John David Weir), both at home; son, Joey (Verna), at home; seven grandchildren, William, Philip, Michael, Courtney, Justin, Curtis and Shavon; sisters, Marjorie (Mrs. Arno Roston) and Margurite (Mrs. John Woodburn), both of Sydney; brothers, Robert MacKinnon, Lawrencetown, Annapolis County, John MacKinnon, Toronto, William (Shirley) MacKinnon, Alberta; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her loving husband of 36 years, William C. (Junior) Buffett.
Visitation will be in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, today (Friday) from 7-9 p.m. and Saturday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in Immaculate Conception Church with the Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
Memorial donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Lloyd Douglas Gillis
45, New Waterford
Lloyd Douglas Gillis, 45, of 2868 Hinchey Ave., New Waterford, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of John Gillis, New Waterford and the late Margaret ‘Dolly’ (Brady) Gillis.
Mr. Gillis was a member of St. Agnes Church. He worked as a coal miner. He was a member of Unit 217, Army and Navy and belonged to several town dart and bowling leagues. At one time he enjoyed curling.
Surviving are his wife, the former Debbie (Hurley) Gillis; two daughters, Robin Clarke, Orillia, Ont., Nicole Gillis, Sydney; son, Lloyd Jr., at home; three brothers, Raymond and Danny, both of New Waterford and Robert (Karen), Brampton, Ont.; two sisters, Shauna, New Waterford and Becky (Mrs. Francis Fiore), Brampton, Ont.; three grandchildren, Jordan, Taylor and Brendon; two special friends, Emory Gouthro and Moe Duguid.
He was predeceased by his mother, Margaret, sister, Barbara in infancy, two brothers, Edwin and John Boyd, paternal grandparents, James and Catherine Gillis and maternal grandparents, Millie and Eddy Graham.
Visitation is in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Homes, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, today (Friday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Saturday, 2 p.m. in St. Agnes Church with Fr. Bob Neville officiating. Cremation to follow with burial in the parish cemetery.
Brian A. MacDougall
52, Frenchvale
Brian Alexander MacDougall, 52, a resident of the Frenchvale Road, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, as a result of an accident involving a tree skidder.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was a son of the late Bernard and Blanche (Hurley) MacDougall.
Brian was employed as an ironworker in the construction industry and also worked as a woodsman for many years. He was a 25-year member of the Ironworkers Union No. 752 and was an avid outdoorsman.
Surviving are son and best friend, George (Lee), Beechmont; daughter, Judy, Halifax; a much loved and cherished granddaughter, Danielle; four brothers, Bernie, North Sydney, Harold (Jan), Fredericton, N.B., Russell (Debbie), Leitches Creek, Paul (Valerie), Sydney Mines; six sisters, Joyce (Wayne) Walker, Amherst, Diane (Gary) Phillipo, North Sydney, Roxanne (Greg) Benfer, Missouri, U.S.A., Judy MacDougall, North Sydney, Valerie (Fraser) Patterson, Ross Ferry and Holly (Robbie) Simm, Sydney Mines.
Brian was predeceased by wife, Lenna (Musgrave) MacDougall in 1998.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service Saturday, 2 p.m. at St. Columba United Church, Leitches Creek with the Rev. Bernice Spracklin officiating. Burial to follow at Calvin United Church Cemetery, Upper Leitches Creek.
