Josephine Buffett

Mrs. Josephine Buffett, of 52 Young St., Sydney Mines, who died June 15, 2000, is survived by daughters, Irene (Mrs. Ian Morris), Nancy (Mrs. Brian Dove), Lisa Buffet (John David Weir) and son, Joey (Vera), all of Sydney Mines.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines.
Geraldine Sarah Gouthro
76, Sydney
Geraldine Sarah Gouthro, 76, of 105 Windsor St., Sydney, formerly of 92 Howe St., passed away June 15, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Health Care Complex.
Born at Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Mary Agnes (MacPhee) and the late John T. MacDonald, of 40 Ingoville St., Sydney.
She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Sydney River. A graduate of Holy Angels High School, she also graduated from St. Mary’s Hospital, Montreal in 1945 as a registered nurse. She was a devoted longtime member of the CWL. Gerri also worked as a volunteer canvasser with the Canadian Cancer Society.
Surviving are four daughters, Elizabeth (Howard Hills), Calgary, Susan (Archie Ferguson), Coxheath, Maureen (James MacLellan), Vanderhoof, B.C., Catherine Ann, Calgary; three sons, Paddy, Halifax, Peter (Mary Lynn), Blackett’s Lake, Paul, Calgary; four sisters, Adelaide Fitzpatrick, St. Catharines, Ont., Olga MacCormick, Rothesay, N.B., Patsy Vandaele, Montreal, Sister Eileen, CSM, Bethany, Antigonish; two brothers, Jack, Boston and Ronald “Buns”, Sydney. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren, Alexandra, Courtney, Bretton, Deidre, Andrew, Steven, Mark, Ryan, Adam, Hugh, Carla, Matthew, Daniel, Mary Rose, Maxine, Alexandra, Sara and Emma.
She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Patrick Joseph “P.J.” Gouthro in 1984; three brothers, Paul (1978), Earl (1983) and Duke (1996).
The late Mrs. Gouthro will have visitation today (Saturday) 7-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Monday, 11 a.m. with Rev. Norman MacPhee officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to Cape Breton Palliative Care Society or the Oncology Department, Cape Breton Regional Health Care Complex.
Trevor A. McKinnon
25, Sydney Mines
Trevor Anthony McKinnon, 25, a resident of Pond Road, Sydney Mines, died Thursday, June 15, 2000, as the result of a motor vehicle accident.
Born in North Sydney, he was a son of David and Norma (MacLean) McKinnon of Sydney Mines. Trevor enjoyed very much working around automobiles as a hobby. He was a member of St. Pius X Church, Sydney Mines.
Surviving, besides his parents, are his companion, Lisa Young; daughter, Sabrina; brother, Travis, at home; paternal grandparents, Thomas and Teresa (Burke) McKinnon, North Sydney; maternal grandmother, Mary (Young) MacLean, North Sydney; also a number of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Norman MacLean.
Visitation 7-9 p.m. today (Saturday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Pius X Church, Sydney Mines with Rev. Tony MacDonald officiating. Burial to follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Bras d’Or.
Evelyn M. (Durham) Burns
66, Westmount
Evelyn M. (Durham) Burns, 66, of Westmount, passed away suddenly at home, Sunday, June 18, 2000.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late James and Gertrude Durham. She was a member of the Westmount United Church. She worked for many years in housekeeping, first at Point Edward Hospital and later at St. Rita Hospital until her retirement.
Surviving are her husband, Robert; one son, Tommy; two daughters, Thelma (A.K. Ball), Ontario, Mary (Fred Harris), Westmount; three sisters, Carrie, Martha, Gertie, and a brother, William, all of Ontario; also survived by two grandsons, Daniel and Robert and two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Katie, and a special grandson, Michael Waye.
She was predeceased by brothers, Arthur, Clarence and Thomas, and a sister, Annie.
Cremation will take place. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
Evelyn “Our Nanny” had a heart as big as the great outdoors and will be remembered by everyone for her never ending kindness.
Sarah Agnes Gillis
88, Sydney
Sarah Agnes Gillis, 88, a resident of MacGillivary Guest Home, and formerly of George Street, Sydney, died Sunday, June 18, 2000, quietly in her sleep, at the residence.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Doolan. She was a former member of Holy Redeemer Parish, St. Gerard’s Guild and a former member of the CWL of St. Joseph and Sacred Heart parishes. She was formerly employed in Brantford, Ont., in a farm equipment factory and after returning to Cape Breton she was employed in the CNIB Canteen at the Sydney Steel Plant as well as at Perlin’s Dairy for many years.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by her daughter, Julia (Mrs. Bernie MacEachern), Sydney, and her son, Dan (Ursula) Gillis, Guysborough, N.S.; grandchildren, Shawn, Krista, Lisa, Helen, Jeff, Hannah and Harrison and great-grandchildren, Brenda Lee and Noah.
She was predeceased by her husband, James Gillis, Grand Mira, and sisters, Winnie MacDonald, Mary MacLeod, Katie Jessome, Julia Partridge, Maggie MacCormick, Nell Doolan; brothers, Mike, Edward, Gus, Jack, Bill, Danny, Tom and Francis.
Visitation will be in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Tuesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass, Wednesday, 10 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Sydney, with Rev. Dan MacDonald officiating. Burial will take place in Resurrection Cemetery.
As memorials, donations may be made to the MacGillivary Guest Home.
Anne Hunley
75, North Sydney
Anne Hunley, 75, a resident of Campbell Street, North Sydney, passed away Saturday, June 17, 2000, at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck.
Born in Ottawa Brook, she was the daughter of the late Angus and Cassie (MacLean) MacLellan.
Anne was a school teacher with the Northside-Victoria District School Board having spent most of her career in St. Mary’s and Seton elementary schools in North Sydney until her retirement.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, North Sydney, and was a member of the CWL. She was also a member of the North Sydney Garden Club, the Retired Teachers Association, and for many years was a valued member of the Palliative Care Society.
She is survived by her husband, Harry; two daughters, Lillian (John) Lang, Montreal and Marilyn, Vancouver; one son, Lloyd at home; six grandchildren, Chad, Stephanie, Laurie, Leslie, Andrew and Jonathan; one sister, Catherine Bonaparte, Reserve; three brothers, Malcolm, Little Narrows, Jackie, Toronto and Mike, East Bay.
She was predeceased by four children in infancy; one sister, Sr. Clement Mary; four brothers, John Neil, Charlie, Jim Angus and Allan.
Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today (Monday) in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass will be held Tuesday, 2 p.m. from St. Joseph’s Church with the Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Bras d’Or. Memorial donations can be made to the Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
James Rory MacNeil
87, Jamesville
James Rory MacNeil, 87, of Jamesville, Victoria County, died June 18, 2000, in the Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck.
Born in Jamesville, he was a son of the late Stephen J. and Mary MacNeil. He was a member of St. Columba Parish, Iona. He was a choir member of St. Columba Parish, and a founding member of St. Columba Credit Union.
During his life he delivered mail, farmed and for a time worked for the Department of Highways.
Surviving is his sister, Regis MacNeil, Baddeck.
He was predeceased by sisters, Elizabeth, Catherine, Mary, Sarah and Regis who died at a young age; brothers, Colin and Dan Joseph, who died in infancy.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today (Monday) in St. Columba Parish, Iona. Funeral, 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Columba Parish, Iona, with the Rev. Fred Morley officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
