Linda Hoban
52, Louisbourg
Linda Hoban, 52, of Louisbourg, passed away Monday, June 19, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late John and Beatrice (Lahey) Parsons.
She was a member of the Stella Maris Parish in Louisbourg and a member of the Catholic Women’s League, ladies auxiliary and the food bank. She was employed for 20 years at National Sea and than at Han Bec Fisheries, Louisbourg.
She is survived by her husband, Clifford; sons, Robert (Alana), Yarmouth, David (Lynn), Louisbourg; sisters, Annie ‘Tootsie’ (Mrs. Montford Lemoine), Louisbourg, Glady (Mrs. Alex Balliard), Pennsylvania, U.S.A.; brother, John Parsons (Raymone), Toronto; grandchildren, Alisha, Shelbi, Corey, Cody, Haley. Also many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sister, Aggie Cluette and brother, Robert Parsons.
Visitation took place Tuesday 7-9 p.m. and will be held today (Wednesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Stella Maris Parish, Main Street, Louisbourg. Funeral service to be held Thursday, 11 a.m. at Stella Maris Parish with Fr. Conrad Edwards officiating. Interment in Stella Maris Parish Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Cancer Society or the Palliative Care.

Linda also had a smile for everyone that will be sadly missed by all.
Charlotte MacDonald
95, Glace Bay
Charlotte MacDonald, 95, of 195 South St., Glace Bay, passed away Monday, June 19, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born at Table Head, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Annie (MacNeil) Connolly.
She was a member of Holy Cross Parish. Charlotte was a quiet person who enjoyed life.
She is survived by one son, Archie MacDonald, Glace Bay; a brother, Thomas Connolly, Ontario and by several grandchildren.
Charlotte was predeceased by her husband, Councillor Angus (Blue) MacDonald, son, Joseph, infant son, Arthur and a daughter, Mary. She was also predeceased by several brothers and sisters in Ontario.
There will be no visitation. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Church with Rev. John Graham officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of choice.
Funeral is under the direction of Curry Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay.
Donald Kenneth McLean
84, Glace Bay
Daniel Kenneth McLean, 84, of Charlotte’s Place and formerly of 28 Rockdale Ave., Glace Bay, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Daniel and Blanche Travis McLean.
Mr. MacLean enrolled in the Canadian Army in the Royal Canadian Artillery. After his discharge he was employed with the Dominion Coal Company and Devco working in No. 20 and No. 26 collieries.
Mr. MacLean is survived by daughter, Janice (Mrs. Robert McKay), Dartmouth; sons, Robert (Armie), North Bay, Ont., Blair (Marcia), Coxheath, Gary, Winnipeg; also numerous grandchildren; brothers, Donnie and Travis.
Predeceased by his wife, Ermie (Bates) McLean, brothers, Jonny, Tommy, Allister, George, Russell, two sisters, Ellen, Jessie and three children in infancy.
By request there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay.
Daniel Alex (Sugar) McNeil
78, Dominion
Daniel A. (Sugar) McNeil, age 78, of 17 Elm St., Dominion and longtime former resident of Reserve Mines, passed away at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, Tuesday, June 20, 2000.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Joseph and Charlotte (Connoly) McNeil.
Mr. McNeil was a member of St. Joseph Church, Reserve Mines. He was a former employee with the Cape Breton Development Corp., working in collieries No. 20 and No. 26, retiring in 1982 after 41 years service. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas with the Canadian Army.
Mr. McNeil is survived by his wife, the former Bernice Gallant; three daughters, Glenda (Mrs. Angus Campbell), New Waterford, Jackie (Maloney) McNeil, Dominion and Belinda (Mrs. Scott White), Dartmouth; and three sons, Blair (Betty), Reserve, Craig (Rebecca), Sydney, and Darrell (Denise), Sydney. Also surviving are two brothers, Joe and Roy, both of Glace Bay and two sisters, Bessie Madore and Martha McLean, both of Glace Bay. Also 16 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Darlene, four sisters, Nora, Catherine, Kleena, and Sadie, two brothers, Billy and Neil.
Visitation for the late Mr. McNeil will be in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, today (Wednesday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m., from St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines, with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Memorials or donations in Daniel’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of choice.
Joe Rennie
57, Sydney Mines
Joseph Augustine Rennie, 57, of 82 Wilsons Rd., Reserve Mines, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 20, 2000, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Reserve Mines on October 10, 1942, he was a son of the late David Brown Rennie and Elizabeth (Boutilier) Rennie Carrigan.
He is survived by his wife, Linda, and was a loving and devoted father to son, Kirk and daughter, Monique. He is also survived by sisters, Elizabeth (John) McCarron, Moncton, Agnes (Stan) McPhee, Grand Lake and brother, Dave, Toronto; and by several nieces, nephews and good friends.
He was predeceased by his brother, George and stepfather, Pat Carrigan.
He graduated from St. F.X. University, after which he taught for 32 years at St. Joseph School, Reserve District High School and Glace Bay High School. Joe helped establish the Safe Grad Program at Reserve and Glace Bay high schools. He also coached hockey, baseball and golf teams; and co-ordinated the Remembrance Day Services in Reserve and Glace Bay.
Joe retired from teaching in 1994 and was a well-known member of the Lingan Golf and Country Club. A member and treasurer of St. Joseph’s Men’s Club, Joe served on the parish council and on various parish committees. He was also an altar server at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church and was instrumental in compiling a written history of St. Joseph’s Parish.
Visitation today (Thursday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Curry Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday 3 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Rev. John Graham officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Donations in Joe’s memory may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, where Joe received loving care, to St. Joseph’s Cemetery Fund, or to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Brian Whitty
44, North Sydney
Brian Joseph Whitty, age 44, a resident of Maria Street in North Sydney, died Monday, June 19, 2000, at home.
Born in Neil’s Harbour, he was the son of Ambrose and Bernadette (Donovan) Whitty of Ingonish.
He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in North Sydney.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, the former Susan Burridge; one son, Paul, one daughter, Jennifer, both at home; seven sisters, Mary (Mrs. Tommy Holly), Donna Hebb, Marion (Mrs. Ronnie Pearson), Millie (Mrs. Billy Scott), Martha (Mrs. Jimmy Dunphy), Janie (Mrs. Billy Fitzgerald), all of Ingonish, Brenda (Mrs. Ernest Wells), North Sydney; one brother, William Whitty, at home; two special nieces, Alice and Lisa Whitty, Ingonish; one special nephew, Greg Whitty, Ingonish; also by a number of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a niece, Tanya Pearson.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass will be held Thursday, 10 a.m. from St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney with Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating assisted by Rev. David Luker. Burial to follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation.
