Mary Catherine Blades
74, Port Morien
Mary Catherine Blades, 74, 61 Cliff St., Port Morien, entered into the peace of the Lord, Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Port Morien, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Lillian (Murphy) Boutilier.
Mary was a parishioner of St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Morien. Her family, home and the Bible were very important to her. She loved to crochet Afghans and give them as gifts to family and friends.
Surviving are her beloved husband of 55 years, Havelock (Pete); daughter, Melissa (Wayne) Howie, Port Morien; sons, Paul (Catherine), Donkin, Darryl (Cathy), Port Morien; brothers, Sanford and Weldon, both of Port Morien, Gilbert, Glace Bay.
Nana, dearly loved and was loved by granddaughters, Joanne (Bernie) Timmons, Paula (David) Attwood, Jennifer Blades, Carolyn Blades, Jacqueline Blades, Kristy Howie, Meagan Howie; great-granddaughter, Lauren Attwood and great-grandson, Nicholas Timmons.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Robert, Elmer and Carlyle, sisters, Clara (Toddy) Martell, Lorna MacPherson, Ina Holman and Winnie Denney.
By request, there will be no visitation for the late Mrs. Blades. Funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Morien with Rev’d Paul Findlay officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
Donations in Mary’s memory to St. Paul’s Anglican Church Building Fund are suggested as an expression of sympathy.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
Gregory Francis Fewer
71, Sydney
Gregory Francis Fewer, 71, Champlain Avenue, Sydney, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Tuesday, June 20, 2000.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late William and Bridgette (Bennett) Fewer.
Gregory was retired from Sydney Steel and a member of Holy Redeemer Church.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth (Hareguy); daughters, Colleen MacCormick, Truro, Patricia MacLean, Rebecca Barrington, Ruth Ann Ryan and Sheila Fewer, all of Sydney; sons, Gregory and Allan, Toronto and Gary, Sydney; a sister, Rita O’Flarity, Sydney; 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by sisters, May, Evelyn, Bride, and Margaret and a brother, William.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial mass will take place in Holy Redeemer Church Friday 11 a.m., with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Internment in Resurrection Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palliative Care unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Daniel Joseph Hawco
66, Sydney
Daniel Joseph Hawco, 66, of Tillock Drive, Sydney. God called him home on Wednesday, June 21, 2000, after a brief battle with cancer. He passed peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with family at his side.
Daniel was born in Chapel’s Cove, Conception Bay, Nfld. He was a son of the late James and Margaret (Kelleher) Hawco.
He was a retired safety engineer.
Daniel is survived by two daughters, Michelle (John) deKort, Peggy (Jay) Sinclair, both of Ontario; three sons, Tony (Sue), Dan (Marion), Stephen (Susan), all of Ontario; eight grandchildren; five sisters, Alice Hickmott, Ontario, Patricia Vanyo, Pennsylvania, Isabel Serra, Pennsylvania, Peggy Casale, Philadelphia and Marie Martin, Oklahoma.
Also survived by children of the late Ida Smith Hawco, Patricia (Charlie) Fry, Diane (Jimmy) Cuff, Angelena (Fred) Mallory, Terry (Jimmy) Campbell, Viola (Benny) Bartlett and Gino Spinazola (Smith) (Karen Munn).
Predeceased by his first wife, Alma Mary Fagan and his second wife, Ida (Petrie) Smith, two sons, James in infancy and Edmond.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will be held at St. Theresa’s Church, Friday, June 23 at 2 p.m. with Fr. Angus MacDougall officiating. Interment will take place at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Norman B. Jones
Glace Bay
Norman B. Jones, of 23 Jessome St., Glace Bay, passed away suddenly at home on Monday, June 19, 2000.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Fitz and Albertha (Williams) Jones.
He is survived by one son, David Madore (Mary), Toronto; and two grandsons. He is also survived by two brothers, Victor and Leonard (Marilyn), both of Glace Bay; three sisters, Francina (Mrs. Samuel Taylor), South Carolina, Hilda (Mrs. Joseph Williams), New Jersey and Violet King, Glace Bay; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, David.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
Isabel King
68, Reserve Mines
Isabel King, 68, of 680 Neville St., Reserve Mines, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late George and Mary (MacEachern) Fraser.
Isabel was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines. She was a former member of both the Dominion Pensioners Club and the Citizens Band Radio Club.
She will be sadly missed by daughters, Debra (Mrs. James MacGillivary), Carol (Mrs. Lewellyn Strong), Kimmy (Mrs. Gary Miles), with whom she resided, all of Reserve Mines; sons, Darrell (Donna), Kevin (Sheila), both of Reserve and Fraser (Karen), Vancouver; brothers, Alton (Gerri) Fraser, Boston, Burt (Patsy) Fraser, Glace Bay and Alex (Donna) Fraser, Reserve; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Also aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Family pets, King and Charlie will surely miss Isabel.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband, George (Dubby), son, Derrick Joseph, in infancy, sister, Olive Vingar and brother, George (Sonny) Fraser.
Visitation for the late Mrs. King will be held today (Friday) 7-9 p.m. and Saturday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Sunday, 6 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines with Fr. John Graham officiating.
Donations in Isabel’s memory to Canadian Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Diabetes Association or St. Joseph’s Cemetery Fund are suggested as an expression of sympathy.
John F. MacDonald
70, Howie Centre
John F. MacDonald, 70, of Howie Centre, died peacefully in the presence of family, Thursday, June 22, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Dominion, he was the son of the late Joseph and Sadie (Black) MacDonald.
In his early years, John F. served as a paratrooper with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He worked for many years as a salesperson in real estate, and has served on the Cape Breton Real Estate Board.
John F. was associated with New Dawn Enterprises from its very beginnings and served for some time as its general manager.
He was for some time a member of Sydney Kiwanis Club and the Knights of Columbus.
John F. will be fondly remembered by members of the Cape Breton business community and members of the Carsillo Movement.
He is survived by his wife, Mona (Marsh) and by daughter, Gwendolyn (Bryan Sweeney) and sons, John (Tammy) Kenny and Daniel (Bonnie) Kenny, both of Calgary, Alta.
He is also survived by grandchildren, Colleen and Sean Sweeney, Michael, Ashley and Christopher Kenny, as well as his uncle, John Black, Sydney and an aunt, Mary (Black) Collins, Boston.
He is also survived by three sisters, Mary (Mickey) Gillis, Prime Brook, Joyce (Jim) MacLean, Sydney and Ann Gallant, Truro and by brothers, Dan V., Glace Bay, Charles (Sharon), Point Edward and Gregory (Jeannette), Truro and by many caring nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Sydney Memorial Chapel, with funeral service in the chapel, Monday, 10:30 a.m. with Pastor John Lyons officiating.
