Harvery Alexander MacEwen
66, St. Peter's
Harvey Alexander MacEwen, 66, of St. Peter’s, died Saturday, June 24, 2000, at the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.
Born in St. Peter’s on Oct. 23, 1933, son of the late John and Annie (MacKenzie) MacEwen.
Harvey was an original member of the St. Peter’s Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of St. Peter’s Community Club where he held various executive positions throughout the years. He was the Nicolas Denny Museum trustee and an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 47, St. Peter’s. He was a former member of the Richmond Fiddlers and former vice-president of St. Peter’s Minor Ball Association. A member and steward of St. Peter’s United Church. He served on the New Manse Building Committee.
Harvey enjoyed history and music. He was a loyal fan of St. Peter’s Royals and St. Peter’s District High School hockey.
He retired from Stora Enso, Port Hawkesbury, where he worked for 21 years in the stores department.
He is survived by his wife, the former Marcia MacKay; daughters, Kim (Paul) Hiscock, Dartmouth, Allison (Kenneth) Martell, Lower L’Ardoise; son, Ian (Rosette), Dartmouth; sister Mary T. (Ena) Prime, St. Peter’s; two nieces and two nephews and grandchildren, Justin, Kaylee, Logan, Trent, Madeline.
Harvey was predeceased by brothers, Kenneth, William (Bunter), sister, Georgina in infancy.
Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today (Tuesday) in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, St. Peter’s. Funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday from St. Peter’s United Church with Rev. Anthony Ware officiating. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery, St. Peter’s. Reception will follow in the St. Peter’s United Church Hall.
Family flowers only please. Donations may be made to the Dr. W.B. Kingston Memorial Clinic, Organ Fund New Manse Building Fund of St. Peter’s United Church, any local fire departments or the Harvey A. MacEwen Memorial Bursary Fund in care of St. Peter’s Community Club.
Florence C. MacKinnon
Sydney
Florence MacKinnon of Sydney, passed away peacefully at home Sunday, June 25/00.
Born at Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Jessie (Kennedy) Campbell.
She was a 25-year member of the Saint Anthony Daniel Parish CWL.
She is survived by three daughters, Paula, Zurich, Switzerland, Joan, Halifax and Barbara, Sydney, two sons, Frank, British Virgin Islands and Bill, Fall River, N.S. She is also survived by one sister, Marguerite Dunn, Edmonton, Alta.; one brother, Donald Campbell, Port Hawkesbury and six grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Eddy (Peter), a daughter, Betty Jean, brothers, Jim, Joe, Bernard and Frank (Bing) and sisters, Gertrude, Tina and Agnes.
Her presence and kindness will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
There will be no visitation. Funeral mass will be held Friday, June 30/00 at 11 a.m. at Saint Anthony Daniel Church with Rev. Leo Boone officiating. Burial and reception to follow. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Patricia (Pat) McKay
49, Rankin Inlet
Patricia (Pat) H. McKay (nee Hardy), 49, of Rankin Inlet, Nunavut (formerly of Mira Road) passed away peacefully at her home in Rankin Inlet, Thursday, June 22, 2000, with family by her side after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of Marie Hardy and the late William (Bill) Hardy.
She was employed by “The Northern Store” in Rankin Inlet. She was previously employed with Co-op grocery, Prince Street, and with the Lord Fin Restaurant at the Sydney Shopping Centre.
Surviving are her husband, Brian McKay; and sons, David (Monica) and Derek; stepson, Todd (Toota) and stepdaughter, Brandy.
She is also survived by sisters, Gloria DeMone (Warren), and Lorraine MacKinnon (Danny) and brothers, Wayne (Kathy), Bruce (Dorothy) and Stephen (Wendy), all of Sydney. She will be sadly missed by numerous nieces and nephews.
Pat was predeceased by siblings, Theresa Kokocki (Joe) and infant David Hardy.
Pat for many years was active with Scouts Canada. She assumed many roles and achieved the title of deputy commander and training officer for Vanier District.
She also volunteered her time as a teacher’s aid for handicapped children at Mira Road School.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will take place at Immaculate Heart Parish, Mira Road, Thursday, June 29, 11 a.m. under the direction of Fr. Gary MacPherson. Interment at Forrest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
William J. Mombourquette
81, Spryfield/Lower L'Ardoise
William J. Mombourquette, 81, of Spryfield and Lower L’Ardoise, N.S., died Sunday, June 25, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
He was a veteran of the Second World War.
Born in Lower L’Ardoise, he was the son of the late James R. Mombourquette and Minnie (Sampson) Mombourquette.
He is survived by his wife, Jean, Spryfield; sisters, Matilda Clannon, Lower L’Ardoise, Mary Slate, Spryfield, and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by sisters, Victoria Mariner and Evangeline Martell and brothers, George, Isaac, Henry, and Francis.
No visitation. Interment of cremated remains at a later date in Canso, N.S.

Hilda (Rutt) Spearns
Halifax
Hilda (Rutt) Spearns, Northwood Manor, formerly of Westmount (Sydney), N.S., passed away Monday, June 26, 2000, in Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre, Halifax Infirmary Site.
Born in North Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Paula Hoban. She was a member of the Holy Rosary Church in Westmount.
Surviving are her son, John Hoban, Yarmouth; daughters, Mrs. Hilda Joudrey, Bedford, Mrs. Evelyn Miron, Halifax, Mrs. Leota Rose, Prospect Bay, Mrs. Mary Muise, Prospect; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her late husbands, Leo Spearns and Jack Rutt, brothers, Clayton and Tom, sister, Clara, stepbrothers, Bill, Leo and Jack.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Westmount.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Northwoodcare Inc. or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
Ruby Grace MacMillan
Glace Bay
Ruby Grace MacMillan of 86 Nolan’s Lane and formerly of 91 Catherine St., Glace Bay, died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at the Health Care Complex.
Born in Truro, N.S., and raised on Catalone, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late John and Laura (Linkletter) Clarke.
Mrs. MacMillan was a member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay.
Mrs. MacMillan is survived by daughters, Jean Comeau, Kay (Earl) Wilson, Laura (Billy) Madore, all of Glace Bay, Donna (Shelly) Mullins, Reserve Mines; son Roy (Gezele) MacMillan, Enfield, N.S.; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Lillian Ellis, Halifax, Mae Slaunwhite, Spryfield, Halifax. N.S.
Predeceased by her husband Malcolm A. MacMillan, a daughter, Paulette Ann in infancy, three sisters and one brother.
There will he no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held Friday, June 30, at 3 p.m. in Lock End Cemetery, Catalone, with the Rev. Eric Lynk officiating.
