L. Elizabeth (Betty) Chisholm
59, Antigonish
L. Elizabeth (Betty), 59, of 16 Ross St., Antigonish, died Thursday, June 29, 2000, at home.
Born in MacKay’s Corner, Cape Breton, Betty was the daughter of the late Lubin and Sophie (Aucoin) Bisson.
Betty attended MacKay’s Corner School from Kindergarten to Grade 9, and later graduated from St. Ann’s High School in Glace Bay. She was a member of the Sisters of Charity of Halifax for six years. She then attended St. Martha’s School of Nursing, graduating in 1966. In 1986, Betty attained a bachelor of arts degree from Mount St. Vincent University.
As a nurse, Betty worked in various areas of the field, including the positions of nursing supervisor, clinical instructor at St. Martha’s School of Nursing and St. F.X. University and staff nurse in in-patient psychiatry. Following her retirement from St. Martha’s in 1996 and until her recent illness, Betty was employed in Pastoral Care at the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish.
Betty is survived by her husband, Alex; her children, Mary Elizabeth (Stan Kyritsis), Dawson Creek, B.C., Terri Lynn, Calgary, Paul, Dawson Creek, B.C.; her sisters, Margaret (and Ed) Driscol, Toronto, Ont., Theresa (and Erwin) McMaster, MacKay’s Corner, Bernadette (and Ed) Ingham, Glace Bay, Rose (and Danny) MacMullin, Reserve Mines; her brothers, Rev. Cliff, Glace Bay, Lubin (and Joan), Oakville, Ont., Danny (and Marie), East Bay.
She was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Mary Elsie, and her brothers, Wilfred and Melvin, Glace Bay.
Visitation 7-9 p.m. Saturday, 1:30-4:30, 7-9 p.m. Sunday in MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant St., Antigonish. Funeral Service, Monday 11 a.m. in St. Ninian’s Cathedral, Antigonish, Rev. Cliff Bisson, and Rev. Bill Crispo officiating, Burial in St. Ninian’s Cemetery.
Donations to St. Martha’s Hospital in the Home, or St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Daniel Patrick Gallant
79, Reserve Mines
Daniel Patrick Gallant, 79, of 22 Belgium St., Reserve Mines, passed away suddenly Thursday, June 29, 2000, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Center.
Born in Reserve Mines, he was the son of the late Glorice and Elizabeth (Roach) Gallant.
Daniel was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines. He was a retired coalminer having worked in No. 10, 1B and 26 collieries for 40 years until his retirement in 1970. He was an avid sports fan.
He is survived by one brother, George (Jean) Gallant, Sydney; and one sister, Edna Levy, Peggy’s Cove. He is also survived by special nephew, Al (Theresa) Gallant, Glace Bay, and special friends, Frank and Marie MacDonald, Reserve Mines.
He will be missed by many nieces, nephews, and a great number of friends and relatives.
He was predeceased by brothers, Albert, John Joe and Linus and one sister, Evelyn Kane.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A memorial mass will be at a later date at St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines.
As an expression of sympathy for Daniel donations may be made to Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of choice.

Mary A. (Addie) MacLean Hall
65, Victoria Mines
Mary Adeline Hall of Victoria Mines passed away peacefully, at home, on Thursday, June 29, 2000.
Born in Frenchvale, Addie was a daughter of the late Stephen J. and Agnes (Currie) MacLean.
Surviving are three daughters, Patsy, Christine and Natalie (Cecil), Ontario; sons, Tim (Noreen), Victoria, B.C. and Phillip (Chrissie), Dartmouth; her companion, Freddie Baker; and grandchildren, Samantha, Brianna, Nadine, Cory, Erica and Kristin Hall, Greg Hall Hiltz, David, Daniel, and Natasha MacKesey, Katrina Bronstein and Andrew Stevenson. She is also survived by five sisters, Rosemary Gouthro, Prime Brook, Jennie (Joe) Rock, Boston, Patsy MacLellan, Kingston, N.S, Bishie (Jim) MacInnis, Sackville, and Ann (Bryan) Finny, Ottawa; three, brothers, Tommy (Theresa), East Bay, David (Juanita), Ontario, and John (Eileen), Dowingtown, Penn., and longtime friend, Erma Burke.
Besides her parents, Addie was predeceased by a son, Gregory, granddaughter, Louise, four brothers, Johnny, Joe, Charles, and Danny and a sister, Ann Carmella. She was also predeceased by three nephews, Douglas MacLean, Michael Gouthro and Brent MacLean and a niece, Carol Ann Larkin.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Saturday and Sunday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at St. Alphonsus Church on Monday. Time to be announced. Interment in St. Alphonsus Cemetery.

J. Fraser MacAulay
89, Windsor
J. Fraser Macaulay, 89, passed away Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at Haliburton Place, Windsor, N.S.
Born in Marble Mountain, C.B., he was the son of the late Dr. J.F. and Dolena (MacDonald) Macaulay.
He worked for many years for Eaton’s in Sydney and retired from the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission in 1976. Fraser lived most of his life in Sydney at 802 George St. and 20 Tillock Dr. In 1992, he moved to Hants County to be with his family and entered Haliburton Place two years ago. He loved to camp and travelled extensively following his retirement. A true Cape Bretoner, he loved the music of his island which could always be heard playing on his stereo.
Surviving are his son, James and his wife Carol (Eld), Ardoise; grandson, Jamie, Newport Beach, Calif.; nephew, Jack Cruickshank and niece, Elsie Jollimore, Halifax.
He was predeceased by his wife, Flora (McKeagan), brother, Dr. Malcolm Macaulay and sisters, Margaret (Cruickshank), Emelyn (Morrison) and Audrey (Urquhart).
Cremation has taken place. There will be an open house and remembrance for friends and family at the family residence, 16 Woodville Rd., Ardoise, Sunday, July 2, from 2-4 p.m. Visitation will be held 12-2 p.m. Tuesday, July 4 at Sydney Memorial Chapel followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m. in the chapel, the Rev. Willis Henderson officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to “Friends of Haliburton,” 9 Payzant St., Windsor, N.S. B0N 2T0, or a charity of your choice.

Mary Catherine MacLellan
Dominion
Mary Catherine MacLellan, 85, of 160 Neville St., Dominion, passed away Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Inverness, she was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Bennett) Smith.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport. She was a former member of TOPS. Mary captivated both family and friends with her great storytelling. She was also an avid piano player.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She will be sadly missed by daughters, Georgina (Mrs. Mick Donnelly), Inverness, Veronica (Mrs. John Brushett), St. Peter’s and Anne Vergeron, Sydney; sons, Johnnie (Yvonne), Glace Bay, Murdock, Toronto, Wayne (Danielle), Dominion, and Gary, Halifax; daughters-in-law, Johnnena (Mrs. Willard MacLellan) and Shirley (Mrs. Archie MacLellan Jr.); 27 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband, Archibald, sons, Archie Jr. and Willard, daughter, Mildred, stepson, Burt Saunders, daughter-in-law, Geraldine, brothers, Jimmy, Peter, Murdock, Hughie, John Alex (Fifty).
Visitation for the late Mrs. MacLellan will be held Thursday 7-9 p.m. and Friday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport, with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Bridgeport.
Donations in Mary’s memory to Canadian Diabetes Association are suggested as an expression of sympathy.

Marjorie Peck (nee Watt)
75, Albert Bridge
Marjorie Peck (nee Watt), 75, of Brickyard Road, Albert Bridge, died peacefully in her home on Thursday, June 29, 2000, at 1:15 a.m.
Mrs. Peck was for the past 22 years director of Howard House, Sydney, and will be remembered for her important contribution to the correctional field.
Mrs. Peck was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Joseph, and her sister, Esther Thomas.
She will be deeply missed by her children and their loved ones, James, Dennis (and Brenda), Helen (and Carlos) Gurr, Frances (and Karl Comete), Jonathan (and Veronica Centofanti), and by her grandchildren, Christopher, Kathleen, Cooper and Bryn, as well as by her sister, Lynn Hart and her brothers, Dennis and Frank Watt.
Mrs. Peck was a long-time member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Mira Ferry.
There will be no visitation. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 1, in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
