Alexander Pyke
Glace Bay
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Alexander Pyke announce his passing at the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville, Nfld., on Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at the age of 87.
He will be sadly missed by five sons, Joseph Pyke, Glace Bay, David (Linda) Pyke, Kingston, Ernie (Debbie) Pyke, Glace Bay, Edmond (Linda) Pyke, North Bay, Ont., Darren Pyke, North Bay, Ont.; one daughter, Cathy (Bob) Bisson, Stephenville, Nfld.; one brother, George (Aggie) Pyke, Aurora, Ont.; two sisters, Mildred MacDonald and Christina Pyke, both of Glace Bay; nine grandchildren, four step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and a large circle of relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by his wife, Georgette (Pat) Pyke (nee Viens) and two brothers, John Pyke and Francis (Buddy) Pyke.
Cremation service took place at Russell’s Crematorium, Stephenville, Nlfd. Funeral service will be held at Russell’s Funeral Home Chapel, 39 Queen St., Stephenville, today. Funeral mass will take place Monday, July 3 at 10 a.m. from St. Leo’s Parish, Glace Bay. Interment to follow at St. Leo’s Cemetery, Glace Bay.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to a charity of one’s choice would be greatly appreciated.

Anna B. Salvia
98, Chelmsford
Anna B. (MacNeil) (Simpson) Salvia, 98, a long-time resident of Boularderie, died Monday, June 19, 2000, at the Palm Manor Nursing Home in Chelmsford.
She was the wife of the late James V. Salvia and the late Harold B. Simpson.
She was born in Boularderie, N.S., daughter of the late Neil and Christine Anne (MacDonald) MacNeil.
She was educated in Canada. Mrs. Salvia moved to the United States at 17. In 1964, she returned to Canada to retire and in 1993 moved to Chelmsford. She resided in the North Chelmsford section of town and was a member of the Chelmsford Senior Citizens Club.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Audrey M. and John F. McBride, North Chelmsford; five grandchildren, Paula and her husband Paul Hodgkins, Madbury, N.H., Ann Marie and her husband John DeRose, Harvard, Carrie and her husband Gary Bond, Cronulla, Australia, Stephen and his wife Lynne St. Hilaire, Lowell, and Kenneth St. Hilaire, Chelmsford, as well as nine great-grandchildren.
She was also the mother of Neil B. Simpson of Everett, who died in 1980.
Graveside service will be held at St. James Presbyterian Church, Bourlarderie, Monday, July 3, at 2 p.m.
Olga Jessie Boyce
91, Sydney
Frank Doran Barrington, 86, of 312 Esplanade, Sydney, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Thursday, April 27, 2000.
Born in Sydney, Frank was a son of the late John R. and Mary (Sparling) Barrington. In 1972, Frank retired from Sydney Steel.
He is survived by daughters, Frances (George) MacLeod, Stoney Creek, Ont., Judy (Vince) Donovan, Bedford, N.S. and Susan (George) Griffin, Dartmouth; sons, Joe, Sydney, Robert, Blacketts Lake, Michael, Sydney, Douglas, Sydney River, Gerald, Frank and Bruce, all of Howie Centre; sister, Mary Burns, Westmount; brothers, Jack, Sydney and Harry, New Waterford; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Frank was predeceased by his wife, Victoria (Pierrynowski), sisters, Hilda and Marion, brother, Yorke and a son in infancy.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, today (Saturday) from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at St. Anthony Daniel Church, Monday, 11 a.m. with the Rev. Leo Boone officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of one’s choice.
Sarah Katherine (Matheson) Fraser
Beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 29, 2000, after a lengthy illness.
Sarah is survived by her loving husband, Ernest Fraser; daughter, Georgina Hardy, Edmonton, Alta.; son, Ernest Fraser, Orleans, Ont.; daughter, Deborah Farrah, Dartmouth; son, Victor Fraser, Dartmouth; their spouses, Bruce, Diane, Faread and Deborah; grandchildren, Daigo, Arguez, Lindsay and Brent Hardy; Rheanna and Cameron Fraser, Ginger Farrah; Connor Fraser; two step-grandchildren, Pamela LeBrun and Gregory Farrah. Sarah is also survived by a half-sister, Charlene Brown, Glace Bay; brothers, Stewart and Weldon Ransome, Hamilton, Ont; aunt, Mary Hennessy, Sydney; uncle, Charlie Matheson, Gabarus Lake.
She was predeceased by her mother, Margaret Ransome, Glace Bay.
Sarah was born and raised in Gabarus Lake, Cape Breton. She lived most of her life in the Maritimes, with periods of military family postings to Ontario, Quebec and Germany. She worked in retail for more than 25 years and was a volunteer for the Canadian Celiac Association, Nova Scotia Chapter. She will be lovingly missed by all.
Visitation will be today (Monday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in J. Albert Walker and Sons Funeral Home, 307 Prince Albert Rd., Dartmouth. Services will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Maple Street, Dartmouth, 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 2. Reception to follow in the parish centre.
Daniel J. Gillis
81, East Bay
Daniel J. Gillis, 81, of Meadows Road, East Bay, passed away peacefully, Saturday, April 29, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Meadows Road, he was the son of the late Dan and Lucy (MacKinnon) Gillis. He was a member of St. Mary’s Parish, East Bay. Daniel retired from the Sydney Steel Plant, after a number of years service.
He is survived by two sisters, Mary (Mrs. Lloyd Crowell), Richmond Hill, Ont., Stella Holmes, Sudbury, Ont.; one brother, Gregory (Ethel) Gillis, Halifax and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by one sister, Christina (Tina) MacDonald and three brothers, Allan, John Hugh and Anthony (Tony).
The late Mr. Gillis will have visitation today (Monday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, second level. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Mary’s Church, East Bay with Fr. Frank Abbass officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Joseph H. Hines
92, Glace Bay
Joseph H. Hines, 92, of Glace Bay, who passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2000, was also predeceased by a brother, Alex and a sister, Kilina MacDonald. Funeral mass was celebrated Saturday, 2:30 p.m. in Holy Cross Church.

Francis Joseph Linden
67, Sydney
Francis Joseph Linden, 67, of 240 Union St., Sydney, passed away at his residence, Saturday, April 29, 2000.
Born in Louisdale, Francis was the son of the late Wilfred and Margaret (Sampson) Linden.
He is survived by his wife, Maureen MacNamara; two loving sons, Kevin, Sydney and Shaun at home and by a brother, Arthur, Sydney.
Francis worked 39 years as manager of Atlantic Springs Machine Company. He was owner of F.J. Mining for nine years until his retirement in December 1999.
Visitation will be held in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., today (Monday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at St. Theresa’s Church, Tuesday, 11 a.m. with the Rev. Angus MacDougall officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cardio Vascular Unit at the QEII, Halifax or to a charity of one’s choice.
