Mary Catherine MacKinnon
69, East Bay
Mary Catherine MacKinnon, 69, of East Bay, died Friday, April 28, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Daniel J. and Clara (Proctor) MacGillivary. She was raised by the late Daniel B. and Elizabeth (MacDonald) MacGillivary. She was a member of St. Mary’s Parish, East Bay.
She is survived by her husband, Murdock MacKinnon; four sons, Roderick (Christena) and Michael (Lorna), both of East Bay, Murdock (Linda), Howie Centre and Kevin (Michelle), Meadows Road; two sisters, Margaret O’Connell, Boston and Sally Sparling, Sydney; one brother, James A. MacGillivary, East Bay and eight grandchildren, Daniel, Ann Marie, Donald, David, Stephen, Kristen, Kayla and Jason.
She was predeceased by one grandson, Joseph A. MacGillivary and one stepbrother, John A. MacGillivary.
The late Mrs. MacKinnon will have visitation today (Monday) at the family residence, 1840 Northside East Bay. Funeral mass will be held Tuesday, 2:30 p.m. in St. Mary’s Church, East Bay with Fr. Frank Abbass officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of choice.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
Russell Arthur MacLean
36, Point Aconi
Russell Arthur MacLean, 36, of 968 Point Aconi Rd., Bras d’Or, passed away Friday, April 28, 2000, at home.
Born in North Sydney, he was the son of James Edward and Leona (Levionnois) MacLean, Point Aconi.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann (Fader); sons, Gordon and Russell; daughters, Kristen and Samantha, Point Aconi; brothers, Douglas (Stephanie), Point Aconi, Terrance, Quebec, Leonard (Rosalie), Point Aconi, Brian (Paulette), Alder Point, Roy, Point Aconi, Bruce (Arlene), Black Rock, Gary (Elaine), Point Aconi and Joseph (Corina), Point Aconi; sisters, Patricia, Ontario and Elizabeth (Keith) Timkins, England; grandmother, Blanche Levionnois, Sydney and by several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by brother, Gordon and a sister in infancy.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral will take place Wednesday, 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or, with the Rev. Bedford Doucette officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Hannah Mae Matheson
70, Breton Cove
Hannah Mae Matheson, 70, of Breton Cove, passed away in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Sunday, April 30, 2000.
Born in Breton Cove, Hannah was the daughter of the late D.J. and Nora (MacQueen) Matheson. She was a member of Calvin Presbyterian Church. She was a resident of Alderwood Rest Home in Baddeck for the past year.
She is survived by her brother, Ewen, Breton Cove; niece, Susan, Baddeck; nephew, Craig (Mary Ann), Breton Cove; grandnephews, Michael and Owen.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Maime and Christie; brother, Angus; sister-in-law, Katherine and nephew, Brad.
Visitation will be held at Calvin Presbyterian Church from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, May 2. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, in Calvin Presbyterian Church with Shirley Murdock officiating. Burial in MacDonald Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Arthritis Society or Calvin Presbyterian Church.

James C. MacNeil
81, Jamesville
James C. MacNeil, 81, of Jamesville, died Saturday, April 29, 2000, in the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII.
Born in Jamesville, Victoria Co., he was a son of the late James M. and Sadie (Campbell) MacNeil. He was a member of St. Columba Catholic Church, Iona and the MacNeil Clan. He worked at Sydney Steel until his retirement.
Surviving are brother, Malcolm, Sydney; sisters, Kay MacDonald, Jamesville and Anna MacNeil, Iona.
Visitation 2-9 p.m. today (Monday); funeral 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, both in St. Columba Church with the Rev. Fred Morley officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Columba Church Building Fund.

Alex McNeil
62, New Waterford
Alex McNeil, 62, of 8 Flatpoint Rd., New Waterford, died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at home.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late, Evelyn (McNeil) and Andrew Nolan. He was a member of the Air Support Signal Troope. Alex owned and operated ALMAC Contractors for a number of years before becoming a coal miner at Lingan Collieries. He was also a fisherman. Our dad could do anything he set his mind to. He was a rocket scientist without a degree.
Alex was predeceased by his brother, Andrew in November of 1999.
He is survived by his friend and wife, Louise (Muise) McNeil; sister, Rose (Ted) Hohmann of Upper Gagetown; five children, Jimmy McNeil, Vancouver, Donna (Brian) Ferguson, Peter, Maryrose (Bob) Moore and Raymond, all of New Waterford.
Alex will live on in the hearts of his 11 grandchildren, Robert Cameron, Laurie, Jenny, Scott and Deanna Moore, Amanda and Aaron Ferguson, Joey, Troy and Cory McNeil and Justin McNeil.
Visitation for the late Mr. McNeil will be held in the McLellan Bros. Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, Tuesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Agnes Church, New Waterford with Fr. Robert Neville officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
William Brenton Phillips
79, Margaree Centre
William Brenton Phillips, 79, of Margaree Centre, died Friday, April 28, 2000, in the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital.
Born in Margaree, Inverness Co., he was a son of the late Roy and Jane (Burton) Phillips. He was a carpenter by trade all his adult life, after retiring he enjoyed hobbies such as sport salmon fishing, fly tying as well as fine woodworking. He was also a member of Wilson United Church.
Surviving are his wife, the former Lorraine Phillipo; daughter, Cheryl and son-in-law, Lorne MacDonald, Margaree Centre; brothers, Harold (Christina), Westmount, Byron (Laura), Baddeck, Herman (Marion), Baddeck; sisters, Annie (Ned) Timmons, Margaree Centre, Eva (Richard) Davis, Baddeck, Catherine (Ewan) MacLean, Baddeck; grandchildren, Melanie, Sydney, Christena (Dale) Rancourt, Ontario, Jillian, Margaree Centre.
He was predeceased by brothers, Claude, Winburn and Josie in infancy.
There will be no visitation by request. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, in Wilson United Church, Margaree Centre with the Rev. Gordon MacLean officiating. Burial will be in Congregational Cemetery.
Family flowers only by request. Donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
