Jeff Hugh Tanner
Westmount
Born March 30, 1933, in England, the son of the late Geoffrey and Isabel (Ward) Tanner, Jeff Tanner of Westmount died April 29th, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Predeceased by a sister, Brenda, Jeff leaves two brothers, Jan and Robbie. With his beloved wife Christiane (Ferrière), he created a warm, generous home. He is survived by his children, Isabelle and Joe Sisi, Rachèle Tanner and Gary Green, Geoffrey Tanner and Mary Ann Wilson, and by grandchildren Olivia and Liliane, Willy and Clay.
Having lost the flip of a coin, Jeff came to Cape Breton as a diver to help build the Seal Island Bridge. For over thirty-five years, he ran Eurocar Service, establishing a marvelous reputation as an irreverent, inventive and irascible man. His motto was sort of, “If you don’t want to take care of your car, then neither do I.”
A very private man, he loved his family, a well-tuned engine, reading and classical music. He leaves an enormous number of friends, each of whom felt like one of the chosen few. He was wonderfully informed and never without an interesting opinion. Many met him through their cars and stayed for the stories, the literature and music. He was an exceptionally responsible and trustworthy man.
For a few years, Jeff offered Musical Quest, a classical music program on CJCB. He taught kayaking at the Coast Guard College. He kayaked the Labrador coast solo . . . and across Sydney Harbour to the bank.
There will be no wake and no funeral. A memorial service will be announced. Instead of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
