Nelson Hector MacGibbon
71, Sydney
Nelson Hector MacGibbon, 71, of Kings Road, formerly of Corner Brook, Nfld., passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Monday, May 1, 2000.
Born in Sydney, Nelson was the son of the late Alexander and Kathelene (Matheson) MacGibbon.
Nelson was a member of Westminister Bible Presbyterian Church and a longtime member of the Gideons.
He is survived by his wife, Georgie (Ferguson); daughters, Margaret (Larry) Veinott, New York, Dr. Lois (Hugh) Kirkegaard, Ancaster, Ont., and Lynda, Riverview, N.B.; a son, Alan (Glynis), Oakville, Ont.; sisters, Pearl (James) Hayes, Dartmouth and Greta (Merle) Gambel, Virginia; a niece, Karen (Henry) Johnston, Coxheath and five grandchildren, Jill, Beth, Heather, Patricia and Natalia.
Nelson was predeceased by a daughter, Carole Pearl in infancy and a sister, Marian.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, Tuesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in Westminister Bible Presbyterian Church, Wednesday, 2 p.m. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Gideons or a charity of one’s choice.
He will be fondly remembered and missed by many family members and friends.
George Stewart MacPherson
83, Sydney
George Stewart MacPherson, 83, a resident of Breton Bay Nursing Home, formerly of Harrington Place, Sydney, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney on Sunday, April 30, 2000.
Born in Sydney, George was a son of the late John and Annie Jane (Morrison) MacPherson.
George was an avid skater. In 1980 he retired as a timekeeper for Sydney Steel.
He is survived by his sons, Stuart, Alberta and John, Sydney; sisters, Catherine Vatcher and Anna Lewis, both of Sydney; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
George was predeceased by his wife, Muriel Jean (Colbourne), son, Phillip Angus and brothers, Angus and Roderick.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, Tuesday, 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel, Thursday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Jackie MacDonald officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Christine Pearson
89, Sydney
Christine Pearson, 89, of 28 Dryden Ave., Sydney, formerly of Whitney Pier, died Sunday, April 30, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Big Pond, she was the daughter of the late Angus and Elizabeth (Cameron) MacIsaac.
She was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish, Whitney Pier.
She is survived by one daughter, Marjorie (Mrs. B. Oliver), Hamilton, Ont.; three sons, Jack and Sheldon, both of Sydney and Angus, East Bay; one sister, Alice (Mrs. Doug MacCormack), Sydney; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one sister, Minnie Jackson, one brother, James, and a son, Terry.
The late Mrs. Pearson will have no visitation. A memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Holy Redeemer Church with Fr. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney.
Priscilla Simpson-Tighe
86, Sydney
Priscilla Simpson-Tighe, 86, a resident of The Cove, formerly of Port Morien, passed away at The Cove, on Monday, May 1, 2000.
Born in Glace Bay, Priscilla was a daughter of the late James and Jessie (MacAskill) MacLennan.
Priscilla was a former salesperson with T. Eaton and Co.
She is survived by her daughters, Georgina (Fred) Holman, Port Morien, Shirley (Sam) Boutilier, Port Caledonia, and Jessie Burke, Coxheath; a son, Alfred (Barbara Anne), Georgian Bay, Ont.; sisters, Hannah Campbell, Whycocomagh and Thelma (Horace) Sanderson, Kent, England; daughter-in-law, Francine Simpson, Glace Bay; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Priscilla was predeceased by her first husband, Alfred Simpson and second husband, Frederick Tighe, sons, Kenneth and James, stepsister, Jacqueline, stepbrother, Kenneth MacLennan, granddaughter, Kimberly Burke and two brothers in infancy.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will be held in the chapel, Wednesday 2 p.m., with Rev. Thomas Whent officiating. Interment in Pine Hill Cemetery, Scarborough Ont.
Frank Bicknell
61, Sydney Mines
Frank Bicknell, 61, of 40 Pond Rd., Sydney Mines, died Monday, May 1, 2000, at home.
Born in West Virginia, he was the son of the late Joseph and Frances (Hart) Bicknell.
He was a machinist at the Prince Mine prior to his retirement. He served with the United States Armed Forces in Alaska.
He is survived by his sons, Zachary (Jennifer), Sydney Mines and Joseph, Florida; daughter, Felicia (John) Gums, California; stepchildren, Linda McGuire of Tyler, Texas and Michael Sullivan of Colorado and his grandchildren, Joseph Bicknell and Michael and Julia MacPhee.
He was predeceased by his wife, Constance Tedesco.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday), 7-9 p.m. only at G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will take place Thursday at 2 p.m. in St. Joachim’s Church, Southside Boularderie with the Rev. Bedford Doucette officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Carolin Ann MacLeod Blythe, RN
35, Sydney
Carolin Ann MacLeod Blythe, RN, 35, of Victoria Road, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Monday, May 1, 2000.
Born in Sydney, Carolin was a daughter of Carman and the late Marguerite (Caldwell) MacLeod.
Carolin was a 1990 graduate of St. Rita’s Hospital School of Nursing and prior to her illness was employed at the C.B. Regional Hospital. She was a member of Trinity United Church.
Besides her father, she is survived by her husband, David; sons, Daniel and Matthew, at home; sisters, Linda and Krista, South Bar; and a brother, Richard, Burnaby, B.C.
Carolin was predeceased by her daughter, Christina Mae.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will be held in Trinity United Church, Thursday 2 p.m., with Rev. Donald MacDonald officiating. Interment in Hillcrest Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Library to purchase large print books for the visually impaired and children’s books.
