Alexander Lyle
75, Sydney Mines
Alexander Lyle, 75, of Sydney Mines, passed away Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Alexander (Sandy) and Mary (Vickers) Lyle.
He was a member of St. Pius X Parish, Sydney Mines. Alex was a long-time employee of the British Canadian Co-op Society in Sydney Mines and in his later years managed the Co-op Service Station in North Sydney until his retirement in 1984. He served as a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. He was an avid sports fan and was a member of the Co-op bowling team.
Alex is survived by his wife, the former Ida DiPersio, Sydney Mines; his brothers, Edgar (Carmelita), Sydney Mines, James (Eileen), North Sydney and David (Eileen), Bras d’Or; his sisters, Katherine (John) Conway, Cassilda (Jackie) Beddow, Sydney Mines, Margaret Donato and Sharon (Claus) Heinurk, Lower Sackville, and his many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister, Janet Pickles and his brothers, Herbert and Gerald.
Visitation Friday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral mass will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in St. Pius X Church, Sydney Mines, Rev. Tony MacDonald officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
Donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit c/o the Northside Hospital Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society.
Mary Catherine MacKinnon
69, East Bay
Mary Catherine MacKinnon, 69, of East Bay, died Friday, April 28, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
She was predeceased by one grandson, Joseph A. MacKinnon.
Ethel Neiman
81, North Sydney
Ethel Neiman, 81, a resident of the Northside General Hospital Extended Care Unit, North Sydney, died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at the hospital.
Born in North Sydney, she was a daughter of the late John William and Lillian (Bradbury) Snow.
She lived in Verdun, Quebec, for many years, returning to North Sydney, 10 years ago. She was a member of the Salvation Army.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Benjamin Neiman, two brothers, John Snow and Victor Snow, two sisters, Ida Matthews and Lillian Lundrigan.
Visitation at 1 p.m. Friday in W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney, with a funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Capt. Rocky and Janice Bishop officiating. Burial to follow at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Margaret Duffy, RN
80, Flushing, NY
Word has been received by relatives of the passing of Margaret Duffy, 80, at the Flushing Hospital in New York.
Born in Salmon River in December, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Colin F. and Annie (Gillis) MacDonald.
She was a 1944 graduate of the Sydney City Hospital School of Nursing and practiced her profession in Boston and later in New York.
Predeceased by her husband, Philip.
She is survived by three daughters, Karen (DiBella), Marie and Joan Corrado, five sons, Charles, Kevin, Philip, Gerald and John, all of the United States. She is also survived by her brother, Allan V., Salmon River, two sisters, Josephine MacDonald, Sydney and Kathleen Doncaster, Plymouth, Mass.
She was also predeceased by two brothers, Joe and Duncan and sisters, Sr. Stella CND, Isabelle MacDougall, Nan Currie, and Mary MacPhee.
Burial will take place in Flushing, N.Y., Saturday.
Rachael Manuel
89, Glace Bay
Rachael Manuel, 89, of 21 Sterling Rd., Glace Bay, died at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex, Wednesday, May 3, 2000.
Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late Louis and Alice Mendelson. She was a member of the Congregation Sons of Israel, Glace Bay.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Rachael was predeceased by two sisters, Fannie and Ida and two brothers, Alex and Isaac.
The remains are resting in Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, where funeral will be held today (Friday) at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the Hebrew Cemetery, Glace Bay.
Daniel "Dan" Albert Sudworth
38, Glace Bay
Daniel “Dan” Albert Sudworth, 38, formerly of 2-6th St., Glace Bay, passed away Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Charlottetown, P.E.I.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of Blanche (Trainor) Sudworth and the late Harold Sudworth. Dan was a former member of St. John’s Church, Glace Bay. He was a graduate of Saint Michael’s High School in 1980. He went on to complete a Respiratory Technology Program at the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax in 1982. He was employed at various medical institutions throughout his career, including Halifax, Antigonish and St. John’s, Newfoundland. At the time of his death, he was employed at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Charlottetown, P.E.I.
Dan had a kind and loving heart. He was held in high regard and will be sadly missed by those people whose lives he touched, both professionally and personally. Dan was an avid sports fan, but his true love was golf.
Dan is survived by his mother, Blanche Sudworth; two beloved sons, Andrew and Steven and former wife Carol (Fogwell) Sudworth, all of St. John’s, Nfld.; brothers, Fabe (Cathy), New Waterford, Harold (Kitty), Markham, Ontario; sisters, Vina (James) Clements, Patricia MacKinnon, both of Dominion, Doreen MacKinnon, Sheila (Brendon) McIntyre, both of Glace Bay and Paula Sudworth-Adams, Dartmouth. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
Dan was predeceased by his father, Harold; sister, Mary in infancy, maternal and paternal grandparents.
Visitation for the late Mr. Sudworth will be held Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, 11 a.m. in St. John’s Church with Fr. Paul McGillivray officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Family flowers only please.
Donations in Dan’s memory to a charity of choice are suggested as an expression of sympathy.
Stella Mary Boudreau
79, Sydney
Stella Mary Boudreau, 79, of 21 Young St., Sydney, passed away Friday, May 5, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Louisdale, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Virginia (Marchand) Sampson.
She was a member of St. Augustine's Parish, Sydney and a former member of the parish CWL. "Nanna" will be remembered as a very loving mother and grandmother, whose home was always the focal point in the lives of her family.
She is survived by two daughters, Geraldine (John), Sydney, Rena, with whom she resided; seven sons, Raymond (Joan), Lorne (Linda), David (Kathy), Adrian (Laurie), Alfred (Maureen), Francis (Susan) and Gordie (Kim), all of Sydney; a daughter-in-law, Sandra, Sydney; three brothers, Howard Samson, Tony (Frances), both of Louisdale and Leonard (Alvina), Antigonish; 22 grandchildren, Sheldon, Steven, Shane, Lisa, Karen, Chrystal, Michael, Jason, Robert, Kim, Karrie, Melissa, Edward, Adria, Aaron, Patrick, Courtney, Jordan, Matthew, Jared, Darryl and Jenna; three great-grandchildren, Chantal, Emily and Victoria and by many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Gerard, a son, Carl and two sisters, Delia and Mabel.
The late Mrs. Boudreau will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Saturday, 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Theresa's Church with the Rev. Jim Attwood officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or to a charity of choice.
