Gwendolyn Jean (Burchell) Collier

Gwen Collier, 63, of 82 Main St., Sydney Mines, died Friday, May 5, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of Mrs. Ruth Burchell and the late Harris Burchell. She was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Sydney Mines.
She is survived by daughters, Donna Conrad, Mahone Bay, Sheila (Richard) Newman, North Sydney and Noreen (David) Collier, Sydney Mines; sons, David, Fort McMurray, Brian, Sydney Mines, Earl (Lori), Sydney Mines and Joe, Toronto; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers, Wesley (Sheila), Sydney Mines, Lorne (Ethel), Halifax, David (Pat), Ontario and Wayne (Alice), Ontario.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Collier.
Visitation Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. A private family service will be held at the funeral home, Monday at 11 a.m. followed by cremation. Burial in Brookside Cemetery.
James William Dalton
81, Scotchtown
James William Dalton, 81, of 132 Amelia St., Scotchtown, died Friday, May 5, 2000, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late James Samuel and Mary Ann (MacLellan) Dalton. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
In June 1941, he joined the Cape Breton Highlanders. He worked for the Dominion Coal company in No. 16 Colliery. He was hurt under a fall of stone and suffered serious injuries. He had a genuine love for and appreciation of Scottish music. He spent many happy hours listening to music and playing his fiddle. He enjoyed woodworking and gave away many of his finished projects.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, May (Kendall) Dalton. He is also survived by three sons, John, New Waterford, James (Eva), Sydney and Bernie (Willena), Scotchtown and by one daughter, Edith (Alan) Cummings, New Waterford.
He was deeply loved by 10 grandchildren, Debbie Masters, Eileen, Lisa, Jimmy Dalton, Kim and Sherri Dalton, Bernie and Darren Dalton, Robert and Allison Cummings.
He is also survived by four great-grandchildren, David (D.J.) Masters, Cassidy, Rilee and Megan as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by sisters, Beatrice Hulbert and Loretta MacLean.
Visitation will be held Sunday, May 7, 2000 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. His remains will be removed to Calvin United Church at noon on Monday where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Burial in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Jerome Frederick Forrest, 66, Sydney Mines, died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Alex and Theresa (LeBlanc) Forrest.
He is survived by his former wife, Bernetta MacInnis; his daughters, Georgina (Alderson) Gracie, Sydney Mines, Mary Boudreau, Sydney and Margaret Taylor, North Sydney; his son, Jerome, Hamilton, Ont.; his grandchildren, Nikkie, Joey, Brandy, Shannon, Jimmy, Jamie, Robert and Stephen and by nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brothers, Raymond (Theresa) and John (Lillian), both of North Sydney; sisters, Leona Penny, Viola Reynolds, Theresa MacPherson, Rita Lomond, all of Sydney Mines, Florence (Bill) Donovan, North Sydney.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Steve, Bernard, Russell and Alex and his sister, Ellen Jane Forrest.
Visitation Saturday 7-9 p.m. only, in G.R. Francis Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral service will take place Sunday at 2 p.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines, Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Roderick Donald MacLeod
81, Breton Cove
Roderick Donald MacLeod, 81, of Breton Cove, died Friday, May 5, 2000, at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck.
Born in Breton Cove on Nov. 20, 1918, he was the son of the late Norman R. and Mary (Matheson) MacLeod.
He was an adherent of Calvin Presbyterian Church, Birch Plain. He was a member of the North Shore Heritage Society, he served on the Ocean View Cemetery Committee for many years. A veteran of the Second World War, Roderick served overseas for several years.
He is survived by his wife, the former K. Grace MacDonald; his daughters, Marilyn (Allister N. MacInnis), Breton Cove and Emily (Paul Roberts), Hong Kong. Also surviving are his beloved grandchildren, Steven (10) and Kate (8); sisters, Grace and Mae MacLeod, Baddeck; niece, Grace Ann MacDonald, Baddeck; nephews, Stewart MacDonald, Baddeck and Neil (Evelyn) MacDonald, South Haven.
He was predeceased by a son, Robert Neil, sisters, Mary Jane (Tain) MacDonald, Peggy Keyho, Katha Jose, and Sadie Matheson. Sister Grace and brother Donald in infancy.
The body is resting at Calvin Presbyterian Church with visiting hours 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Monday, May 8. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, at Calvin Presbyterian Church with Shirley Murdock officiating. Burial will be in Ocean View Cemetery.
Family flowers only by request. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Calvin Presbyterian Church or the Ocean View Cemetery Fund.

Sr. Marie Barbara Muldoon
81, Antigonish
Sr. Marie Barbara Muldoon, 81, a Sister of Saint Martha, of Bethany Motherhouse, died at St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish, on Thursday, May 4, 2000, in the 57th year of religious life.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Henry Michael and Mary Catherine (Devereaux) Muldoon.
Sr. Marie Barbara entered the Sisters of Saint Martha on Aug. 15, 1941, having just obtained her RN certificate after studies at New Waterford Hospital School of Nursing. In 1943, she began her life long service in the hospital field. In 1948, she obtained her BSc in Nursing and served as director of nursing service at St. Joseph's Hospital, Glace Bay, St. Rita Hospital, Sydney, St. John's, Lowell, Mass. In 1963, she obtained her MA in Nursing Education and served for 21 years as director of St. Martha's Regional Hospital School of Nursing, Antigonish.
She retired in 1984 but continued to volunteer in the health care field using her expertise at New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, at St. John's Hospital, Lowell, and at St. Martha's Hospital Antigonish, retiring to Bethany in 1995.
Sr. Marie Barbara played an influential role in the development of nursing through her active participation in the Registered Nurses Association of Nova Scotia (RNANS) from 1949 until 1984. She served on education committees at both branch and provincial levels including the Education Curriculum Committee, the Committee of Faculties for N.S. Schools of Nursing, and the RNANS Scholarship Award Committee. She was provincial chairperson for education and a member of the Canadian Nursing Association Education Committee. She held the office of vice-president and president of the RNANS and participated on several task forces including one set up to develop a framework for nursing and nursing standards.
She held leadership positions in the congregation having been elected to the general council, 1973-77; and serving as community leader on two missions for a total of 12 years.
She is survived by five sisters, Mary Joan, Margaret MacCormack and Mary Rita Connolly, Massachusetts, U.S.A., Patricia Williams, Edmonton, Alta., Ann Coleen Wilson, Newmarket, Ont., and by two brothers, Daniel William and Henry Francis, Sydney.
She is predeceased by one sister, Catherine Gaudet.
The remains will rest at Bethany after 2 p.m. Sunday, where a Bible Vigil will be held Sunday, May 7, at 7:30 p.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Monday, May 8, at 2 p.m. in Bethany Chapel.

Mary Edna Sampson
75, Lower L'Ardoise
Mary Edna Sampson, 75, of Lower L'Ardoise, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Thursday, May 4, 2000.
She was the daughter of the late Dominic and Veronica Briand Sampson of Lower L'Ardoise.
She was an employee of Simpsons, Halifax for 20 years.
She is survived by one sister, Laura Charlesworth, Victoria, B.C.; two brothers, John, Halifax and Dan, Lower L'Ardoise.
She was predeceased by four sisters, Rose, Mary, Gladys and Christina, three brothers, Arthur, Fred and Richard.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the L'Ardoise Funeral Home. Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Holy Guardian Angels' Church with the Rev. John MacIntyre officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Family flowers only please. Donations may be made to the Heart or Kidney Foundation.
