Mary Ann Rachel McPherson

Mary Ann Rachel McPherson - It was with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and aunt, Rae, Friday, May 5, 2000, at Harbourview Hospital, Veterans Wing, Sydney Mines.
She was born March 4, 1923 in Big Glace Bay and was the daughter of the late Edyth Boutilier Levis and the late Wilson Boutilier and step-father Andrew Levis.
She moved to Margaree Valley as a young child. “Boots” enlisted in 1943 at the age of 20 in the CWAC (Canadian Women’s Ambulance Corps) serving her country overseas. She was an amateur radio operator “VE1KP,” living most of her married life in Glace Bay and Sydney.
Rae was an adventuresome, fun-loving, compassionate, gentle soul. She took great pleasure in her family, gardening, outdoor activities, nature and poetry.
She is survived by her loving husband Roy, daughters, Lorraine (Dr. Art MacLean), New Glasgow, Beryl, Chester Basin, Beverley (Mrs. Gordon Laurence), Margaree Harbour, Troye (Mrs. Pat Kyte), Dartmouth and Cindy, England, several nieces and nephews. She was the proud grandmother of Holly, Chris, James, Emily, Nathan, Andrew and Courtney. Also surviving is her sister Virginia of Margaree.
She was predeceased by her parents and step-sister Marion Levis.
She will be sadly missed by her family and always remembered by those who loved her dearly. The following was found among the many clippings she collected over the years:
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia.

Stanley Joseph Peck
60, Mill Creek
Stanley Peck, 60, of Mill Creek died peacefully Sunday, May 7, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, with his family at his side.
Born at Little Pond, he was the son of Grace (Boutilier) Peck and the late Sam Peck. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Bras d’Or. Stan was operator of his own trucking business for many years and later joined his wife in the restaurant business.
He is survived by his beloved wife Carmelita (Marsh), his daughters, Lorna (Alex) MacDonald and Laurie, both in Mill Creek and his grandchildren he loved so dearly, Kristen, Alexandra, Loren Anne, Dakota and Dalton.
Besides his father, he was predeceased by his brother Lorne.
Visitation today (Monday) 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will take place Tuesday at 10:30 a.m., in St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or, with Rev. Bedford Doucette officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Ian Stuart Thistle
18, Coxheath
Ian Stuart Thistle, 18, of 9 MacKinnon Ave., Coxheath, passed away Saturday, May 6, 2000, as a result of an aircraft accident.
Born in Red Deer, Alberta, and lived in Quebec, New Brunswick, and Baden, Germany, he was a son of Barb (Higdon) and Cal Thistle of Coxheath. Being a Grade 12 honour student of Riverview High School, Ian had aspirations of becoming an engineer.
He was a very active member of 693 Sydney Rotary Air Cadet Squadron where he earned his glider and power licence. A recipient of the “Duke of Edinburgh” silver award, Ian was always willing to lend a hand. He gave of his time, teaching younger cadets in the Air Cadet Program in helping them achieve their goals.
Ian was involved as a volunteer with Branch #128, Royal Canadian Legion, with food drives, poppy campaigns and a server for fund raisers as well as being involved with Sydney Rotary Club fund raisers.
He was a past member of Scouts Canada previously involved in minor hockey and youth soccer and was recently trying his hand at rugby.
Ian is survived by two brothers, Tyler, Winnipeg, and Kent, at home. Also survived by maternal grandparents, Carmel and Stuart Higdon of Ball’s Creek and predeceased by paternal grandparents, Marjorie and Herbert Thistle of St. John’s, Nfld. Leaving behind is a family of many aunts, uncles, cousins and a step-grandmother Rose.
He will be sadly and forever missed by family, friends and all who ever crossed his path. We love you, Ian.
Visitation for the late Mr. Thistle will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Fatima Church with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. Burial at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Fred Young
Sydney
Fred Young of 40 Logue Dr., Sydney, passed away Saturday, May 6, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late John Daniel and Kate (MacLean) Young.
He was a devoted member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Sydney River. Fred was an accountant with Maritime Builders and Stephen’s Construction Ltd. for more than 40 years prior to his retirement. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1060 Sydney, Fr. William B. MacLeod Assembly 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. He was an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. #128, and a member of the Legionnaires Singers of Whitney Pier. Fred was also a member and treasurer for the Memory Lane Singers of Sydney.
He is survived by one sister, Mrs. June MacMullin, Sydney, two brothers, John, North Sydney and David, Sydney Mines. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by sisters, Eva, Eileen, Freda Livingstone, and Jenny Clarke.
The late Mr. Young will have visitation from 7-9 p.m. tonight (Monday) and from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Our Lady of Fatima Church with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. Interment in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Yorke St., Sydney Mines.
Arthur L. LeBlanc
85, Sydney
Arthur Lawrence LeBlanc, 85, of 400 Kings Rd., Sydney, formerly of 131 Welton St., passed away peacefully with his family by his side, Monday, May 8, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a lengthy illness.
Born in East Margaree, he was the son of the late Gilbert and Catherine (Gallant) LeBlanc.
He was a member of St. Theresa’s Parish, Sydney, where for many years he served as an usher. Art was also an active member of the Sydney Pensioners Club, having been a founding member, who served as sergeant-at-arms and on the board of directors for the club as well as on various other committees. He was employed for 42 years with the Sydney Steel Corp. as a rigger and a burner, retiring in 1980.
Surviving are his wife, the former Mavis Croft; one daughter, Kathleen Marie, Sydney; two sons, Gilbert, Delaware, Ohio and Stanley (Myrtle), Windsor, Ont.; two sisters, Mrs. Agnes MacNeil, Scarborough, Ont., Mary Ann (Lenis) Chiasson, Bailieboro, Ont.; one brother, Leo Paul (Rita), Halifax; six granddaughters, Laura Lee, Michelle, Kimberley, Sheila, Joanne and Wanda; six great-grandchildren, Kevin, Michael, Ryan, Jenna, Madison and Courtney.
He was predeceased by a brother in infancy.
The late Mr. LeBlanc will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Theresa’s Church with the Rev. A. MacDougall officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Cancer Unit of the C.B. Regional Hospital or the C.B. Palliative Care Society.
Roland Willard Lewis
Westmount
Roland Willard Lewis died peacefully in his sleep surrounded by family at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Saturday, May 6, 2000.
Born in Westmount, he was a son of the late Gerald and Maude (Stapleton) Lewis.
Rollie, as he was known to everyone, is survived by his wife, the former Marie MacNeil; daughters, Donna LeLievre, Sydney, Debra (Bernie) Chiasson, Blacketts Lake, Diane McKay, Coxheath; son, Gary (Cheryl), Sydney; grandchildren, Sean and Michael LeLievre, Ciana and Erin Chiasson, Matthew, Alana and Jillian McKay. Also surviving are sisters, Irene Leon, Sydney, Norma (John) O’Leary, California; brothers, Lloyd (Marion), Westmount, Bernard (Jean), New Minas and Sinclair (Alice), Westmount, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Gerald.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel.
There will be a memorial mass held at Holy Rosary Church, Westmount, Friday, May 12, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Dan MacInnis officiating. A private family interment will be held at a later date.
Memorials may be made to Palliative Care or charity of choice.
