Charles (Grandy) William McLeod,
83, Reserve
Charles (Gandy) William McLeod, 83, of Tompkinsville, Reserve Mines and formerly of Port Caledonia, died at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, Sunday, May 7, 2000.
Born in Port Caledonia, he was the son of the late Frank and Annabelle (Boutilier) McLeod.
He resided in Reserve the last three years with his best friend and caregiver, Mary Poplawski.
Mr. McLeod is survived by sisters, Elsie (Lambert) Truckair and Winnifred Warren, both of Glace Bay and by several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by sisters, Dorothy MacMullen, Beatrice MacLeod, brothers, Jim, Clarence, Samuel, Robert and two sisters in infancy.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Donations may be made to a favourite charity.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay.
Joseph R. McPhee
79, Bridgeport
Joseph R. McPhee, 79, of 1355 Main St., Bridgeport, died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at the V.G. Hospital, Halifax.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Stephen and Veronica (Petrie) McPhee.
He attended St. Ann’s High School, Glace Bay, where he received his Grade 11, he then went on to graduate from Morrison High School, Grade 12. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving from 1939 to 1945, he was with the Eight Division New Brunswick Hussars. He served in Continental Europe, in Canada, United Kingdom and the Central Mediterranean area. He also served in such specific areas as Holland, Italy, Belgium, France and Germany. He received the Italy Star; the France/Germany Star; he also received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp.
Joseph was discharged Jan. 25, 1946, he returned to civilian life on demobilization. When he returned home, he went to work as a carpenter, he worked with J.A. MacSween for 20 years. He then went out on his own and became self-employed.
He took a very active part in church affairs. He served on the parish council and he was parish warden at Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport.
He is survived by one son, Ronald, at home; three brothers, Bill, Windsor, N.S., Lawrence and Michael, both of Glace Bay; two sisters, Mary McIntyre, Scarborough, Ont. and Theresa Flavin, New York State.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Margaret Walsh and one brother, Charles W.
Visitation will take place Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy for Joseph, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Margaret Alice (Peggy) Pearo
72, Kewstoke, Inverness Co.
Margaret Alice (Peggy) Pearo, 72, of Kewstoke, Inverness County, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, in the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck.
Born in Kewstoke, Inverness County, she was a daughter of Catherine (MacLean) Nock and the late William Nock of Kewstoke, Inverness County.
She was a member of the Stewart United Church, Whycocomagh and also devoted her time as a Sunday school teacher. A life member of the United Church Women (MacLean Unit).
She is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Sam; daughters, Shirley (Frank) Chandler, Churchview, Patsy (Donald) MacDonald, Soapstone Mines, Diane (Gordon) Rouse, Big Marsh Road, River Denys, Wilma (Ross) Matheson, Blues Mills; Margie (Gary) Ellis, Big Marsh Road, River Denys, Elaine (Alex) Campbell, Brook Village, Melody (Kenny) Ferguson, East Skye Glen; sons, John Robert (Sharon), Big Marsh Road, River Denys, Samuel “Timmie” (Linda), Kewstoke, Sheldon (Tonya), Sherbrooke; sisters, Florrie (Peter) Ferguson, Whycocomagh, Murdena MacKinnon, Whycocomagh, Irene MacPherson, Kewstoke, Emily (Morrison) MacKay, Whycocomagh, Shirley (Allie) Rouse, Big Marsh Road, River Denys, Kay (Dan) Shaw, Baddeck; brothers, William (Shirley) Knock, Whycocomagh, Winston (Jean) Nock, Baddeck, Sandy (Tena) Nock, Kewstoke; 23 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by brother, Jackie Nock, uncle, Duncan MacLean and grandson, Brian Keith in infancy.
Visitation was held Monday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Whycocomagh. Funeral service will be held today (Tuesday) in Stewart United Church with the Rev. Anne McKnight officiating. Burial in Stewartdale Cemetery.

Fred Wildsmith Sr
86, Port Hawkesbury
Fred Wildsmith Sr., 86, Port Hawkesbury, died Monday, May 8, 2000, in the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Fred and Eleanor (Chamberlain) Wildsmith.
He was a mechanic and owner of Wildsmith Texaco Garage. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Port Hawkesbury.
A veteran of the Second World War, serving in France and Germany. He was a founding member and president for 17 years of the Evergreen Club. A member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43, Port Hawkesbury. He was a member of the Senior Citizen Commission for 12 years. President of the Nova Scotia Federation for Seniors and Pensioners. President of 63 A Council for Senior Citizens for 13 years. Honourary Life Member of the Federation of Senior Citizens and Pensioners of Nova Scotia. He gave of his talent, time and energy to improve the quality of life for all seniors of this generation and generations to come.
He is survived by his wife, the former Linden (Latter/Crowdis); daughter, Eleanor (Bob) Burgess, Port Hawkesbury; grandchildren, Blaine Burgess, Port Hawkesbury, Bonnie Burgess, Calgary; sons, Freddie, Truro, Ralph (Dorothy), Port Hawkesbury; stepdaughter, Laura Jean (Mrs. Malcolm Fraser), Margaree; stepsons, Frank Crowdis, Margaree; Raymond Crowdis, Saint John, N.B., Sheldon Crowdis, Calgary, Alta; 14 step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Irene (Harn) Wildsmith and brother, Ralph.
Visitation will be held today (Tuesday), 2-9 p.m. in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Holy Trinity Anglican Church with Archdeacon Peter MacRae officiating. Legion service will be held at 7:30 p.m. this evening in the funeral home. Burial in Holy Trinity Cemetery.

Carl Johnannes (Collie) Young
92, Truro
Carl Johannes (Collie) Young, 92, of 283 Glenwood Dr., Truro, died Monday, May 8, 2000, at the Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro.
Born in Moers, Germany, he was a son of the late Carl and Catharina (Hoffmann) Young.
He was a miner in Cape Breton for 50 years. He repaired televisions and radios as a hobby and loved fishing and hunting. He was also an accordion player, playing at various functions and dances.
He is survived by a sister, Margaret Daye, Glace Bay and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Christine Frison, sister, Mary and brother, William.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of the Mattatall Funeral Home, Truro. No visitation, services or flowers by the deceased’s request. A private family committal service to be held at a later date in the Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.

Mary Isabell (Tutty) Boutilier
89, Wadden's Cove
Mary Isabell Boutilier, 89, of Wadden’s Cove, passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at her residence in Wadden’s Cove.
Born in Homeville, she was the daughter of the late Ephriam and Amy (Murrant) Tutty.
Mrs. Boutilier was a member of Christ Anglican Church, South Head.
She is survived by three daughters, Amy (Mrs. Edward Wadden), Lillian (Mrs. Douglas Keats), both of Wadden’s Cove and Glenda (Mrs. John Dillon), Birch Grove. Also surviving are nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Boutilier was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Charles, two children and one granddaughter in infancy and a sister, Jean Green.
Visitation will be in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, today (Wednesday) from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday in Christ Anglican Church, Wadden’s Cove with the Rev’d Paul Findlay officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Mrs. Boutilier’s remains will be transferred to Christ Church at noon Friday.
