Eric Thomas Hanna
59, Truro
Eric Thomas Hanna, 59, of 37 Granville Dr., Truro, passed away on Monday, May 8, 2000, at home.
Born in Sydney, N.S., he was a son of Fred (Carol) Hanna of Sydney and Jean Lahey.
A former resident of Sydney, Eric served with the Canadian Armed Services in Cypress and Germany, as well as Gagetown and Debert. He had been a resident of Truro and area for the past 20 years. He was an avid hockey and baseball fan and enjoyed fishing and hunting.
He is survived by his wife, Doris; daughters, Sabine (Doug) Pace, Truro, Michelle Hanna-Ricks (Frank), Virginia, U.S.A.; a son, Scott (Kim) Hanna, Calgary, Alta.; one grandchild, Dustin; sisters, Yvonne (Michael), California, Brenda, Ontario; brothers, Freddy (Elaine) and Lawrence, all of Sydney.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 5-7 p.m. in the Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. Funeral mass Friday at 10 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Church, Truro, with Fr. Rudy Manaloto officiating. Burial will be held in Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Children’s Wish Foundation.

Kenneth Wayne MacDonald
50, Sydney
Kenneth Wayne MacDonald, 50, of Bentinck Street, Sydney, passed away at home, Saturday, May 6, 2000.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Micheal B. (Red Mick) and Margaret (Gauthier) MacDonald.
He is survived by his stepmother, Mary; brothers, Micheal, Burlington, Ont., Harold (Bunker), Edmonton, Alta. and Robert, Burlington, Ont.; sisters, Theresa (Mrs. Peter MacKinnon), Halifax, Carol (Mrs. Blaise MacIsaac), Burlington, Ont., Frances (Mrs. Maurice DeBoer), Cayuga, Ont. and Patricia (Mrs. Lloyd Larkin), Rusticoville, P.E.I.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Catherine Dicks.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, today (Wednesday), 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Church, Thursday, 10 a.m. with the Rev. Dan MacDonald officiating. Interment at a later date.

Carmelita MacTavish
Sydney River
Carmelita Laura MacTavish, 58, of 47 Thompson Ave., Sydney River, passed away suddenly on Monday, May 8, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with her family at her side.
Born at Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Laura (Benoit) Hureau.
She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Sydney River. Carmie loved her walks and the regular dinner gatherings with family and friends.
Surviving are her husband W.E. (Sonny); two daughters, Terry Lynn (Andrew) LeVatte, Halifax and Kimberly Ann, Toronto; five sisters, Mrs. Theresa MacQueen, Westmount, Jeanette (Bernie) Campbell, Hay River, N.W.T., Mrs. Evelyn Callaghan, Sydney, Delores (Bob) Martin, Dartmouth, and Josephine (Aubrey) Boone, Dartmouth. Also surviving are two granddaughters, Megan Jewells and Courtney Alexandra.
Predeceased by a brother in infancy.
The late Mrs. MacTavish will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Wednesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 11, in Our Lady of Fatima Church, with Rev. Norman MacPhee officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Anne Marie (Bailey) Sampson, LPN
Sydney
Ann Marie Sampson, of St. Peter’s Road, Sydney, passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Charles (Ace) and Anna (Bonaparte) Bailey.
She was a member of St. Theresa’s Parish, Sydney. She was a licensed practical nurse and had her BA from UCCB. Before her illness, she worked at the Breton Bay Nursing Home.
Surviving are her husband and loving best friend, Danny McDonnell, Sydney; also her three children of John G. Sampson, Doreen (Mike) Coady, Alexina (Joe) and Nadine (Blaine), all of Sydney; three sisters, Mrs. Dorothy MacDonald, Sydney, Willena (Charles Cook), Sydney and Donita (Gordon Ley), Mississauga; one brother, Charlie Bailey, Ontario; two grandchildren, Michael and Kansas and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Norma MacSween.
Visitation will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel today (Wednesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in St. Theresa’s Church with the Rev. A. MacDougall officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Capt. Ret. Burford M. Skinner
66, Glace Bay
Capt. Ret. Burford M. Skinner, 66, of Blackett Street, Glace Bay, passed away suddenly, surrounded by family and friends following his son and new daughter-in-law’s wedding in Hamilton, Ont., May 6, 2000.
Born in Glace Bay, Bert was the son of the late Burford and Blanche (Burke) Skinner.
Following high school he was employed in 1952 to 1953 with T. Eaton Co., following which he served 31 years with the Royal Canadian Airforce, commissioned from the ranks. He served in Grostemquin, France; Greenwood, N.S.; Summerside, P.E.I.; Camp Borden, Ont.; Ottawa, Ont. and Shearwater, N.S. Following retirement, he worked for Paramax, Montreal for two years before returning to Glace Bay in 1986. Bert has spent many enjoyable summers with his family in his most favourite spot in the world, Mira Gut.
Growing up in New Aberdeen, Bert taught Sunday school in Warden United Church and was active in the boys scouts. He was an avid swimmer and scuba diver, trained in judo, he was active in boys clubs, teaching judo for a number of years. He was an active member of the Salvation Army being involved in youth groups, men’s clubs and other projects, the most important of which he felt was being part of the building committee for the Dartmouth Citadel Salvation Army Corps 1968 to 1969.
Mr. Skinner is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 42 years, Mary (Foster); sons, Roy Foster, Oakville, Ont., Brian Michael and his wife Katie, Oakville, Ont. and his beloved granddaughters, Alexa and Madison, who truly loved and adored him; one brother, Michael (Anne); stepmother, Katherine Skinner; uncle, Eric (Doris) Skinner; aunts, Kay (Arthur) Peach and Daisy Skinner; brothers and sisters-in-law, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by an uncle, Richard Skinner.
Visitation for the late Mr. Skinner will be held Thursday, May 11, 2000 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral will be held, Friday, May 12, 2000, at 2 p.m. in the Salvation Army Citadel, Union Street, Glace Bay with Maj. Dinzel and Katherine Baggs officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney/Glace Bay Highway.
Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, the Gideons, Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of choice.

Norma Jean MacLeod-Connell
52, New Waterford
Norma Jean MacLeod-Connell, 52, 323 Arthur St., New Waterford, died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, after a short and courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Angus and Beatrice (Beaton) MacLeod. She was a member of Calvin United Church, New Waterford.
Surviving are her daughters, Karyn (James Campbell), Halifax, Vicky (Tommy Helle), Raylene (Wayne MacNamara), both of Kitchener, Ont.; son, Cally (Giselle Chiasson), New Waterford; a grandson, Gavyn and a granddaughter, Mikayla; former husband, Gus Connell, New Waterford; nephew, David MacLeod and nieces, Judy and Donna MacLeod, Ontario; and a very close friend, Marilyn Leudy; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was predeceased by a brother, Calvin.
Visitation is Thursday in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Homes, 380 Smith St., New Waterford 2-4, 7-9 p.m. The body will be moved to the Calvin United Church at noon on Friday, followed by the funeral at 2:30 p.m., Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Burial will be in the Calvin United Church Cemetery, Upper Leitches Creek.
Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society as memorials.
