(Ada) Edith Mary (Hardy-Best) Gillis
Ingonish
(Ada) Edith Gillis, 77, of Sydney, formerly of Ingonish, passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Ingonish, she was the daughter of the late Simon and Mary (Currie) Hardy.
Ada was a member of the Home and School, the Anglican Church Women’s Auxiliary, Ingonish and the Christ Anglican Church Guild, Sydney. Ada was employed for many years at MacLeod’s Point and other tourist businesses in Ingonish.
She is survived by three sisters, Louise Chipman, Marie Morrison, both of Sydney, Mary Ann Hardy, Ingonish; one brother, Richard (Laura) Hardy, Ingonish. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Alexander Best, second husband, John Gillis, sisters, Isabel, Hazel, Sadie and Rose, brothers, James and Archie.
The late Mrs. Gillis will have visitation tonight (Thursday), 7-9 p.m. on the 2nd level of the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney. Her remains will then be transferred to the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Ingonish for visitation Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday in St. John’s Anglican Church, Ingonish with Archdeacon Weldon Smith officiating. Burial in St. John’s Anglican Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the charity of one’s choice.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home.
Darrell K.M. GooGoo
25, Waycobah First Nation
Darrell K.M. GooGoo, 25, of Waycobah First Nation, died at a young age as a result of a car/pedestrian accident, Monday, May 8, 2000, in Waycobah.
Born in Inverness on March 9, 1975, he was a son of Debbie (Mrs. Noel A. Bernard) and John S. GooGoo.
He was a member of Holy Trinity Parish, Waycobah. He enjoyed volunteering at various concerts. He sang and played his guitar and keyboard with great pride. Darrell had a love for animals and spent most of his leisure time playing video games with his closest friends.
He is survived by his half-brothers, P.J. and Raymond, both of Waycobah; half-sisters, Rene, Denise and Shawna, all of Waycobah. He was dearly loved and raised by grandparents, Pearl and the late Gabriel A. GooGoo; also survived by grandmother, Irene and the late Peter J. GooGoo; uncles, Joe, Brian and Byron GooGoo; aunts, Mrs. Jean MacLean, Whycocomagh, Mrs. Karen Doucette and Mrs. Betty Stevens, both of Eskasoni, Mrs. Muriel GooGoo, Whycocomagh. He was known as a brother and nephew to Wanda, Charles (Mick), Darlene, Danita and Doreen, all of Waycobah. Darrell will be deeply and sadly missed forever by his family and friends. God Bless.
Visitation will be after 5 p.m. this evening (Thursday) in the home of his grandmother, Pearl GooGoo, 9078 Waycobah. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church with the Rev. Bernie MacDonald officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.

Mary Magdalen Kelly
Glace Bay
Mary Magdalen Kelly, 78, of North Street, Glace Bay, passed away Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Big Pond, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Helen (MacPhee) Butts.
Mrs. Kelly was a former member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay.
Mrs. Kelly is survived by daughters, Helen (Mrs. Denis Lever), Sandra (Mrs. Blair Wadden), Karen Kricak, Deborah (Mrs. Tony Boutilier), all of Glace Bay and Rose (Mrs. Hugh MacKinnon), Springfield, Mass.; sons, Joseph (Beryl), Glace Bay and Walter (Shelley), Dominion; brothers, Tom Butts, New Brunswick, and Neil Butts, Glace Bay; sisters, Bridget Radkey and Rose MacDonald, both of Glace Bay; 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Michael Joseph, son, Thomas Jude, in infancy, brother, Fred and a sister, Mary Ellen Morrison.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Kelly will be held Friday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Doug Murphy officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Donations in Mary’s memory to The Lung Association of Nova Scotia are suggested as an expression of sympathy.

Memorial Service
There will be a memorial service for the late Garry Kop, grandson of the late William Smith and Mary Gilday (Golly) of Reserve Mines and son of Martin and Dianne Kop of Neville Street, Reserve Mines, for friends and family, Friday, May 12, at St. Joseph’s Parish, Reserve Mines, at 11 a.m. with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Arthur L. LeBlanc
85, Sydney
Arthur Lawrence LeBlanc, 85, of 400 Kings Rd., Sydney, formerly of 131 Welton St., passed away peacefully with his family by his side, Monday, May 8, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a lengthy illness.
Born in East Margaree, he was the son of the late Gilbert and Catherine (Gallant) LeBlanc.
He was a member of St. Theresa’s Parish, Sydney, where for many years he served as an usher. Art was also an active member of the Sydney Pensioners Club, having been a founding member, who served as sergeant-at-arms and on the board of directors for the club as well as on various other committees. He was employed for 42 years with the Sydney Steel Corp. as a rigger and a burner, retiring in 1980.
Surviving are his wife, the former Mavis Croft; one daughter, Kathleen Marie, Sydney; two sons, Gilbert, Delaware, Ohio and Stanley (Myrtle), Windsor, Ont.; two sisters, Mrs. Agnes MacNeil, Scarborough, Ont., Mary Ann (Lenis) Chiasson, Bailieboro, Ont.; one brother, Leo Paul (Rita), Halifax; six granddaughters, Laura Lee, Michelle, Kimberley, Sheila, Joanne and Wanda; six great-grandchildren, Kevin, Michael, Ryan, Jenna, Madison and Courtney.
He was predeceased by a brother in infancy.
The late Mr. LeBlanc will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, today (Thursday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Theresa’s Church with the Rev. A. MacDougall officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Cancer Unit of the C.B. Regional Hospital or the C.B. Palliative Care Society.
Ian A. MacDonald
41, North Sydney
Ian A. MacDonald, 41, a resident of North Sydney, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of Thelma (Anderson) MacDonald and of the late Donald I. MacDonald of North Sydney.
In his youth he enjoyed baseball, hockey, trout fishing and was a member of 562 Cabot Squadron Royal Canadian Legion Air Cadets. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by family and friends.
Surviving are his companion, Nancy Keagan and their son, James; three brothers, Donn (Janice), Dartmouth, David (Donna), Elmsdale and Jim, Ingonish. Also many extended family members and friends.
Ian was also predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Alex and Alison MacDonald and maternal grandparents, Roddie and Mary Anderson, all of Glace Bay.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney with the Rev. Karen Ralph officiating. Burial to follow at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
No flowers by request of deceased, Memorial donations may be made to the Children’s Wish Foundation or to a charity of one’s choice.

Bernice (Marinelli) MacDougall, 62, of 64 Guy St., Sydney Mines, died suddenly Wednesday, May 10, 2000, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Patsy and Amelia (Fougere) Marinelli.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Sydney Mines.
She is survived by her husband, Murdoch MacDougall; two daughters, Kimberly (Donald) MacPherson, Elizabeth (Darryl) Boudreau, both of Sydney Mines; five sons, Murdoch Jr. (Mary Jane), Sydney Mines, Stuart (Lori), Lower Sackville, Bobby, Sandy and Robin, all at home; three sisters, Patricia (Daniel) Dunlop, Howie Centre, Muriel (David) MacIntyre, Boularderie, Donna Marie, Howie Centre; brother-in-law, Donald Puddicombe and a sister-in-law, Lois Marinelli, Sydney; eight grandchildren, Erin, Rebecca, Jessica, Ian, Michael, Jennifer, Coady and Joshua; and a special niece, Joanne Marinelli.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Mary in infancy, three brothers, Joseph, John and Robert and one sister, Marie.
Visitation will be held Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral mass will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in Immaculate Conception Church with the Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
