John George (Jack) Payne
84, Glace Bay
John George (Jack) Payne, 84, of 250 Brookside St., Glace Bay, passed away Friday, May 12, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Centre.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late William and Mary “Maude” (Smith) Payne.
He was a member of St. Anthony’s Church, Glace Bay. Mr. Payne spent most of his life in the fishing industry. While fishing on the East Coast he was involved in longline lobster and sword fishing until moving, in 1965, to Ucluelet, B.C. where he was involved mostly in salmon fishing until his retirement and moving back to Glace Bay in 1986.
In his earlier days he was the only person known to have caught a swordfish on a cod jig.
Mr. Payne was noted as a very good neighbour, he was well liked by everyone and known for his mechanical abilities and willingness to help anyone in need.
He is survived by his wife, the former Maria (Harrietha); two sons, Michael, Surrey, B.C. and George, Kanora, Ont.; brother, Murray, Langley, B.C. and four granddaughters.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Clarence and Roy, five sisters, Marion Kelloway, Willena Baxter, Annie Boutilier, Mabel McNeil and Pearl McCormick.
Visitation will be held in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral, 16 Reserve St., Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony’s Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Jake Andrea officiating. Burial will follow in St. Anne’s Cemetery, Glace Bay.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
David (Bruss) Rich
55, New Waterford
David (Bruss) Rich, 55, of 689 Mahon St., New Waterford, passed away Thursday, May 11, 2000, at home.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late James and Annie (Campbell) Rich.
He was a member of Calvin United Church, New Waterford. He worked as a coal miner, retiring from the Phalen Colliery. Bruss loved hunting, fishing and his cabin in River Denys.
He is survived by his wife, the former Carmel Butts; three sons, Dave (Laurilynn) and Christopher, both of Calgary, Darrell, at home; three brothers, James Jr. (Theresa), Ronald and Wayne (Mitchie), all of New Waterford and a granddaughter, Sarah.
There will be no visitation by request. Funeral service will be held Monday, 2:30 p.m. from the Calvin United Church with the Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Burial in the Union Grove Cemetery.

Gordon Patrick Burton
84, North Sydney
Gordon Patrick Burton, 84, a resident of High St., North Sydney, died Sunday, May 14, 2000, at the Harbourview Hospital, Sydney Mines.
Born in North Sydney, he was a son of the late William Arthur and Catherine (Osmond) Burton. He was employed as a stevedore with CN Marine in North Sydney until his retirement. He was a veteran with the Canadian Army during the Second World War and was very proud of his service to his country as a Cape Breton Highlander from August 1940 to May 1946. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. #19, a long-time member of the North Sydney Fire Department, a member of the Knights of Columbus and of the Northside Horsemens Association.
Surviving are his wife Gertrude (Jonkman), three daughters, Patricia Ann (Mrs. Ken Brown), North Sydney, Carol Elizabeth (Mrs. Barry Reid), Millstream, Pictou Co., Joanne Maria (Mrs. Greg Baker), Lake Echo, N.S., four sons, John William (Cory Wolfgram), East Conway, N.H., Gordon David (Christa), Judique, N.S., Norman James (Joan Martell), Mineville, Halifax Co., Kenneth Patrick, North Sydney. Also surviving are four granddaughters, nine grandsons, and three great-grandsons, a brother Norman, North Sydney and two sisters, Carol Burton, Barr Settlement, N.S. and Ruth Berg, North Carolina.
He was predeceased by a brother Bill, sisters, Claire Reynolds, Dorothy MacDougall, Edna Johnston, and Marjorie in infancy.
No visitation by request. A Funeral Mass will take place on Wednesday 2 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Palliative Care of Cape Breton.

James B. "Bud" Gallivan
89, Sydney
James B. “Bud” Gallivan, of 39 Mercer St., Sydney, died peacefully, Saturday, May 13, 2000, at home surrounded by his family in his ninetieth year.
Born and raised in Whitney Pier, he was a son of the late Luke and Elizabeth (Kehoe) Gallivan. He was a member of Holy Redeemer Church. Bud was employed at the International Piers for more than 50 years, retiring in 1977.
He is survived by daughters, Mary (Earl) LeBlanc, Janice (Brian) Black, Sydney, Elaine (Mike) MacPhee, Halifax, sons, James “Bud” (Margie), Norwalk, Connecticut, Bill (Winnifred), Gary (Karen), Sydney, Terrence (Donna), Halifax, brother, Patrick, Sydney, sisters, Evelyn Holt, and Sister Elizabeth CND, Sydney, 20 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased in November by his wife of 62 years, Maria (MacNeil), by a sister, Mary Vasily, brothers, Wilfred, Gregory, Danny, Monsignor William and Ignatius.
Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. today (Monday) and 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Burial in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Wilfred Joseph Joe
Eskasoni
Wilfred Joe, 53, of Eskasoni, passed away Saturday, May 13, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney, he was the son of the late John Joe and Mary Isabel (Googoo) Joe.
He was a member of Holy Family Parish, Eskasoni, and a member of the Housing Authority of Eskasoni. Wilfred was a carpenter by trade. He was employed with the Eskasoni Fisheries as an oyster fisherman for a number of years.
Surviving are his wife the former Margaret Rose Googoo, five daughters, Margaret Rose Joe, Wagmatcook, Mary Tena Joe, Charlotte Anne Joe, Nancy Noelle Joe, and Flora Ann Joe, all of Eskasoni, two sons, Stephen S. Joe, Houlton, Maine, USA, and Joe Talbotte Joe, Eskasoni, two sisters, Mary Catherine Francis, and Mary Tina (Walter) Young, both of Eskasoni, brothers, Levi (Helena) Joe, Benedict S. Joe and Edward J. (Barbara) Joe, also survived by Karl Lafford, John David Lafford, Kenneth Lafford, all of Eskasoni and Kevin Lafford, Toronto, Ont., four grandchildren, Alannah, Madeline, Mary Isabel, Ashley Jane.
He was predeceased by brothers, Fabian, S. Joe, Noel Joe, Joseph Joe, John Joe, and a sister Mary Theresa Joe.
The late Mr. Joe will have visitation after 7 p.m. tonight (Monday) at the family residence 4723 Shore Rd., Eskasoni. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday in Holy Family Church, Eskasoni, with Fr. Robert MacNeil officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Lung Association of Nova Scotia or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Joseph W. "Doady" MacIsaac
66, Glace Bay
Joseph W. “Doady” MacIsaac, 66, of 37 Duke St., Glace Bay, died last week at his home at 37 Duke St., Glace Bay.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Duncan and Sadie (MacNeil) MacIsaac. Over the years Doady was self employed as a carpenter. He was also talented in many other aspects of work life. He was a member of St. Anne’s Parish, Glace Bay.
He is survived by five children and a number of grandchildren, three brothers, Gerard “Archie”, Trenton, Ont., Lionel (Mary), Oshawa, Ont., and Ronald (Joan), Calgary, Alta., four sisters, Margaret “Sis” (Wilfred) Bourgeois, Toronto, Ont., Marilyn (Kado) Placencia, California, Dorita (Jim) Schmidt, Fredericton, N.B., Loretta (Bill) Hasson, California.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by a son Duncan.
No Visitation. A Memorial Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church with Rev. Doug Murphy officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
