Harold Peverley
88, Kamloops/Sydney
Died Monday, April 24, 2000, at Kamloops, B.C.
Harold was educated in Sydney schools. Following which he operated as a commercial artist until he was commissioned as a captain with the Gordon Highlanders of the Canadian Army in 1937. He was stationed at Fort Petrie in Victoria Mines, N.S. at the outbreak of the Second World War. He was a member of CANLOAN (Canadian Officers on Loan to the British Forces). He retired from service with the rank of major.
After the war he was employed with the Boy Scouts of Canada serving at Sydney until 1959, then at Nelson, B.C., Regina, Sask., Thunder Bay, Ont. and Kamloops B.C. In his retirement years he operated an arts supply store and framing shop. He was an accomplished artist in his own right and his paintings were much sought after.
His daughter, Marilyn Gilbert, Kamloops, B.C., survives him. Also two grandsons, one granddaughter, a sister, Dora A. (Ulric) MacDonald, brother-in-law, Gordon Spencer and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife, the former Cecilia MacDonald, a brother, Gordon and a sister, Isabelle.

William Russell Burchell
70, New Victoria
William Russell Burchell, 70, New Victoria, Cape Breton, died Monday, May 15, 2000, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Victoria, he was the son of the former Margaret C. (Townsend) Burchell, New Waterford and the late William G. Burchell.
He was a member of Calvin United Church. For 19 years, Russell was employed as a coal miner in No. 18 Colliery and worked for 12 years at Sydney Steel. His greatest pleasure was his last 14 years operating Burchell’s Dairy in New Victoria. He was an avid sports enthusiast and played softball in the Colliery League, during the 1960s.
Surviving are his wife, the former Allene F. McMullen; one daughter, Lorraine (Leaman) MacKay, Windsor Junction, N.S.; two sons, Russell (Judy) and Rocky (Leanna), both of New Waterford; four brothers, Calvin (Rita), Margaree, Roy (Ruth), New Victoria, Cecil, Merrill (Barbara), both of New Waterford; sister, Cynthia (Frankie) McNeil, New Waterford; grandchildren, David and Shaun Burchell, Jeffrey Burchell and Lindsey, Lesley and Logan MacKay.
Visitation is in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Homes, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, Wednesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral Thursday 10 a.m. at Calvin United Church, Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, New Victoria.
Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society in Russell’s memory would be appreciated.
Peter James Flynn
Sydney
Peter James Flynn, 76, of 21 Yendys St., Sydney, passed away on Sunday, May 14, 2000, at his home.
Born at Argentia, Nfld., he was the son of the late Michael Anthony and Mary Elizabeth (Arsenault) Flynn.
He was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish, Sydney. He served overseas with the Royal Canadian Army during the Second World War and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 12, Sydney. Peter was an avid darts player with the French Club and the Legion Dart League and was an active hunter and fisherman. He worked in the Sydney area for several years as a tile and flooring installer.
Surviving are his son, Ian (Heather), Boisdale; and two grandchildren, Walter and Danny; two sisters, Mrs. Ellen LeBlanc and Mrs. Mary LeBlanc, both of Margaree; and by several nieces and nephews. Also survived by lifelong friend, Jean Miller.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Willemina and Rosella and two brothers, James and John, all in infancy.
The late Mr. Flynn will have visitation Wednesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Anthony Daniel Church with the Rev. Dan MacDonald officiating.
Donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, the Royal Canadian Legion Comfort Fund or a charity of choice.
Marion (White) Hall
71, St. Peter's
Marion Hall, 71, of Grand Greve, St. Peter’s, passed away suddenly on Monday, May 15, 2000, at 1:15 p.m. at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay on Oct. 2, 1928, she was the daughter of the Mrs. Jessie White, a resident of Victoria Haven Nursing Home and the late Abraham (Abe) White of Mechanie Street, Glace Bay.
Marion resided in Halifax for 30 years before moving to Grand Greve.
Marion is survived by a son, Lewellyn, Cambridge, Ont.; sisters, Jean (Allister) Bond, Glace Bay, Jessie Crosby, Brantford, Ont., Elsie (Jon) Tracey, Rockville, U.S.A., Shirley (Pat) Bennett, Glace Bay; brothers, Aubrey, Gordon (Flo), Abe (Grace), all of Glace Bay and Allister (Carol), Cambridge, Ont.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harold Hall, brother, George White and a sister, Lavinia.
By request there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay.

Michael Kenneth LeBlanc
38, North Sydney
Kenny LeBlanc, 38, of 15 Maria St., North Sydney, died suddenly on Sunday, May 14, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Kenny was also survived by a brother-in-law, Donald MacKinnon and a Goddaughter, Jessica LeBlanc.
John Matheson
May 17, 1915 - May 13, 2000
Mr. John Matheson, 84, of 220 Jacqueline Dr., Miramichi, N.B., formerly of Atlantic Street, Sydney, N.S., passed away Saturday, May 13, 2000.
Born in Sydney, N.S., he was the son of the late Kenneth and Nora (Smith) Matheson.
He was employed with Sydney Engineering and Drydock as a welder.
He is survived by a son, Fraser (Judy), Miramichi; one brother, Kenneth (Martha) Grandbay, Westfield; two granddaughters, Cori Leigh Landry (Darren), Denise Matheson, Peterborough, Ont.; grandson, Michael, Saskatoon, Sask.; two great-grandchildren, Amy and Christopher Landry.
He was predeceased by his wife, Gladys, one daughter, Noreen, two brothers, Wilfred and Fraser.
Interment will be in Hardwood Hill Cemetery, Sydney, N.S.
