Arthur Eusebe Camus

A loving husband, father and friend, died peacefully Tuesday, May 16, 2000, surrounded by family members at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Cap Rouge, Inverness County, he moved to Sydney in the 1930s, working more than 40 years as carpenter and foreman of the Sydney Engineering and Dry Docks constructing and repairing ships,
Arthur loved his Acadian heritage, the sea and driving around the landscape of Cape Breton Island, never tiring of its beauty.
He was a dedicated elder at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses for 60 years. He will be remembered by many for his faith, kindness, humour and thoughtfulness.
Arthur was the last member of his family and was predeceased by his parents, Etienne and Marguerite (Poirier) Camus, his first wife, Elizabeth (Lizzie-Anne) Camus, brother, Joseph, sisters, Marie LeBlanc, Anita Muise, Rose Price, and Bella MacDougall.
He leaves to mourn his wife, Mary (nee MacDonald); daughters, Linda Hicks, Jean Mary, Tera (Fabian), all of Sydney, Jean Rose (Marcel Bedard), Calgary, Judy (Ken Middlebrook), Prince Albert, Sask.; and a son, Donnie (Elaine), Brantford, Ont.; 12 grandchildren, Arthur, Jason, Elizabeth, Dylan, Rachel, Ronald, Russell, Cara, Crystal, Brian, Arthur and Donna, step-grandchildren, Nancy, Linda and Russell; great-grandchildren, Hanna, Kyle and Mitchell Hicks and Kyle, Alyssa and Whitney Kowalczyk and many nieces and nephews.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will be held Saturday, at 2 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 786 Alexandra St., Sydney, with Mr. Neil Jefferies officiating.
Anne Margaret (Quinn) Devoe
89, Millville
Anne Margaret (Quinn) Devoe, 89, formerly of Millville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Millville, she was the daughter of the late William and Margaret (Coady) Quinn.
A long-time member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Bras d’Or, she was a reader, hospitality minister, choir member, a member of the parish CWL and one of the founders of the Bras d’Or Seniors and Pensioners Club. She was very active in her community.
She is survived by her sisters, Fran (Duncan) MacKay, Theresa Howley, both of Bras d’Or, and Rita Gross, Texas; her brother, Joe (Dot) Quinn, Mill Creek; her stepson, Buddy Devoe, Alberta; her stepdaughter, Girly (Jack) MacKinnon, North Sydney,; her chosen sons, Henry (Bev) Launay, Sydney and Patrick (Marj) Bennett, Brantford; her grandchildren, David, Deanna, Brian and Dolly; her special friend and caregiver, Pencie Granchelli and her many nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Eugene Moore, her second husband, John Devoe, her sisters, Jane, Ellen, and Mary and her brothers, Dan and William.
Visitation today (Thursday) 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis & Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral mass will take place at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or, Rev. Joe Gillis and Rev. Bedford Doucette officiating. Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Donations may be made to the St. Joseph’s Church Hall Fund or C.B. Palliative Care.

Memorial services for the late Wilfred MacGillivray, of 50 Brown St., Sydney Mines, will be held Friday, May 19, 2000, at Carman United Church, Sydney Mines with the Rev. Karen Ralph officiating.
Alice Mary Penny
79, Sydney
Alice Mary Penny, 79, Virginia Street, Sydney, passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in D’Escousse, Richmond Co., Alice was a daughter of the late Joseph and Ann (Landry) Poirier.
Alice was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church and the Sydney Pensioners Club. She was a volunteer at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and an avid tarabish player.
Surviving Alice is her daughter, Ann (Joseph) Mombourquette, Sydney; seven sons, Tom, Sydney, Lorne, British Columbia, Gerald, Prime Brook, Wayne, Sydney, Ronnie, Prime Brook, Frank, Sydney, and Rev. Phillip, New Brunswick; a sister, Cecilia McNarmara, Evanston, Richmond County; 23 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Clifford in 1981, a sister, Louise Scanlan, and a brother, Victor.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel Thursday 7-9 p.m. and Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be in Bethel Presbyterian Church, Saturday 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Robert Lyle officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
James (Jamie) Guy Bailey Jr.
28, Sydney Mines
James (Jamie) Guy Bailey Jr., 28, of 463 Atlantic St., Sydney Mines, died Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at North Sydney, he was the son of Lillian (MacIntyre) Bailey and the late James (Butch) Bailey. He was a member of Trinity Anglican Church, Sydney Mines.
He is survived by his sister, Paula Lurrette, Ottawa; brothers, Wayne, at home and Kevin (Kim), Petawawa, Ont.; paternal grandparents, Jessie and James (Guy) Bailey, Sydney Mines; nieces, Jennifer and Heather Dawn and nephews, Paul, Tyler and Derrick.
He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Norman and Eva MacIntyre.
Visitation will be in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home today (Friday), May 19, 2000 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Trinity Anglican Church with the Rev. Brenda Drake-MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery, Tobin Road.
Nectaire (Nick) B. Boudreau
75, North Sydney
Nectaire (Nick) Bernard Boudreau, 75, a resident of Stanley Street, North Sydney, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at the Harbourview Hospital, Sydney Mines.
Born in Petit De Grat, Richmond County, he was a son of the late Harry T. and Florence (Samson) Boudreau.
He was employed for many years as a marine engineer working for various companies throughout his career. He served with the Merchant Marine during the Second World War. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 19, North Sydney. He was also a member of St. Joseph’s Church and Father William B. Kiely Council of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Bras d’Or Senior Citizens and Pensioners Club.
Surviving are two brothers, George, St. Peter’s and Cyril (Pauline), Petit De Grat; two sisters, Leona Jabalee, North Sydney and Viola (Doug) Shaw, Truro. Also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Nova Scotia Lung Association or Hospice Palliative Care of Cape Breton.
